Exploring the social and sexual “reality” of contemporary pornography

What are the social roles assumed by men and women in contemporary sexually explicit movies, and in what contexts are their actions portrayed? Perhaps more important, have the predominant themes of pornography shifted in response to the public scrutiny and criticism popular in the mid‐1980s? In this investigation we addressed these questions using a random sample of 50 pornographic videotapes drawn from an archive of essentially all such materials targeted for heterosexual consumers available in the international marketplace from 1979 to 1988. Mathematicians love to tell stories about people they once knew or perhaps only heard about. If the story happens to sound believable, others are apt to repeat it, possibly embellishing on the original tale. Such mathematical folklore occasionally finds its way into print, and once it does, readers are apt to take such stories at face value, lending them additional credibility. Occasionally, though, alleged facts come under scrutiny, and established stories are exposed as fiction. Yet even when someone comes along with decisive evidence refuting an earlier account it can easily happen that the original story just refuses to die.

This article focuses on the use of terms and concepts related to the nationalist movements by the Finnish security police during the Cold War. The key objective of the security police was to protect the legal order of the state and monitor the groups and phenomena potentially harmful to that cause. The previous experience regarding the rise of the radical nationalism and fascism in Finland in the 1930s and the 1947 Paris peace treaties were the historical and legal contexts within which the interpretations were made. In the ongoing fight for sexual equality, discourse and translation are key mechanisms, that deserve careful scrutiny. This chapter describes a teaching experience within my Legal Translation (English–Spanish) module at the University of Valencia. Students were required to translate some passages from Sycamore Row (2013), a best-selling legal thriller by John Grisham. In class, we analyzed and discussed these passages and compared them with the students’ translations as well as with the 2014commercial Spanish version, entitled La herencia.
