<strong>The mesothoracic wings of Afrotropical Scutelleridae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera): morphology and taxonomic significance</strong>

Mesothoracic wings have been examined and compared in 32 species representing 20 genera of Afrotropical Scutelleridae. Morphological characters of the corium are described. Three main types of mesothoracic wing venation patterns can be recognized. The taxonomic significance of forewing characters in Scutelleridae is briefly discussed.
A diterpenoid with antifeedant activity from Scutellaria rubicunda

Abstract Two diterpenoids have been isolated from Scutellaria rubicunda subsp. linneana : (11 S ,13 S ,15 R and S , 16 R ,19 S )-6 α -acetoxy-19-tigloyloxy-2 α ,19;4 α ,18;11,16;15,16-tetraepoxy-neo-clerodan-15-ol (scutecyprol B) and (11 S ,13 S ,15 R and S , 16 R ,19 S )-6 α -acetoxy-2 α ,19;4 α ,18;11,16;15,16-tetra-epoxy-neo-cleroda-15,19,diol (scutalbin C). Both compounds were tested for antifeedant activity against larvae of some species of Lepidoptera. Scutecyprol B shows potent activity at 100 ppm.
Scuteparvin, a new neoclerodane diterpenoid from Scutellaria parvula

Abstract The diterpenoid fraction occurring in the acetone extract of the aerial parts of Scutellaria parvula has been investigated. Only one neoclerodane diterpenoid, scuteparvin, was isolated and its structure elucidated as 4α,18-epoxy-6α- trans -cinnamoyloxy- neo clerod-13-en-15,16-olide, a new natural product. Scuteparvin is quite similar to the already known ajugarin V from Ajuga remota , the only difference being the occurrence of a trans -cinnamoyl ester system instead of an acetate on the 6α-OH group. This finding confirms that the genera Scutellaria and Ajuga are closely related taxonomically.
Transport-related amino acid metabolism in germinating barley grains

When eight [14C]-labelled amino acids were separately injected into the endosperm of germinating (4 days at 20°C) barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Himalaya) grains, the label was rapidly taken up by the scutellum and further transported to the shoot and roots. Some of the amino acids (leucine, lysine and asparagine) were transported in an intact form through the scutellum to the seedling, whilst glutamic acid and aspartic acid were largely converted to glutamine in the scutellum. Proline was mainly transported unchanged, but a small part of the label appeared in glutamine. Differential localization of two acid proteinases in germinating barley (Hordeum vulgare) seed

A cathepsin D-like aspartic proteinase (EC 3.4.23) is abundant in ungerminated barley (Hordeum vulgare) seed while a 30 kDa cysteine endoproteinase (EC 3.4.22) is one of the proteinases synthesized de novo in the germinating seed. In this work, the localization of these two acid proteinases was studied at both the tissue and subcellular levels by immunomicroscopy. The results confirm that they have completely different functions. The aspartic proteinase was present in the ungerminated seed and, during germination, it appeared in all the living tissues of the grain, including the shoot and root. The HVA1 protein belongs to the LEA3 group, which is expressed during the late stage of seed maturation. It is also induced by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) and a variety of environmental stresses in germinating barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). In the present work, the potential role of HVA1 was investigated by studying its tissue distribution and subcellular localization in mature and stressed seeds by immuno-microscopic methods.
