I review the flexibility of social organization and spacing behavior in Clethrionomys. This review is based on a 6-year comparative study and several experimental studies on cyclic populations of the bank vole, C. glareolus, in Central Finland. The social organization of Clethrionomys populations shows great flexibility during both the breeding and nonbreeding season, and is dependent on habitat patchiness, food availability, Predation, kinship, philopatry, and familiarity between individuals. A Comparative Study of Phenotypic Changes in Microtus Social Organization

Monogamy, polygyny, and promiscuity have been found in populations of M. oeconomus and M. agrestis in different environmental situations in northern Finland. Thus the mating systems seem to be more variable both between and within species in Microtus than in Clethrionomys. Spacing behavior in Microtus caused a temporary decline in population density in mid-summer, but in Clethrionomys a decline occurred only in the beginning of the breeding season. Anaerobic treatment of urban wastewater in membrane bioreactors: evaluation of seasonal temperature variations

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of seasonal temperature variations on the anaerobic treatment of urban wastewater in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). To this aim, sludge production, energy recovery potential, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and membrane permeability were evaluated in a submerged anaerobic MBR fitted with industrial-scale membrane units. The plant was operated for 172 days, between summer and winter seasons. Sludge production increased and energy recovery potential decreased when temperature decreased. COD removal and membrane permeability remained nearby stable throughout the whole experimental period.
Distribution and seasonal dynamics of Cryptomonads in Sicilian water bodies

Several species with a relevant ecological importance belong to Cryptophyta. Nevertheless, species-level identification from microscopic observations is problematic, lacking recent taxonomic keys. In this study we report our observations on distribution and seasonal dynamics of Cryptomonads in 33 Sicilian water bodies, as well as the main taxonomical problems we encountered. Species of the genera Cryptomonas and Plagioselmis are the most common in the examined water bodies. Their biomass seasonal trends usually show a peak in late winter and early spring. . This paper describes the effect of artificial plant cover on plant colonization of a bare peat surface, resulting from peat harvesting. Plant species colonization was compared on plots supplied with plastic models simulating Vaccinium vitis-idaea plants and plots without this artificial cover. After two growing seasons, species composition and total biomass of the established plant cover were similar in the two plot types. However, the number of established seedlings in the plots with artificial cover was significantly higher than that in the plots without cover. Birds have a potential of spreading ticks via bird migration routes. In this study, we screened 170 ticks removed during autumn 2010 from 55 birds belonging to 10 species for the presence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). In total, TBEV RNA was detected in 14% of I. ricinus tick samples obtained from different birds species. The results of this study indicate the possible role of migrating birds in the dispersal of TBEV-infected ticks along the southward migration route.

This study focuses on the differences in total phenolic content and its seasonal variations in two temperate brown algae, Cystoseira amentacea (C. Agardh) Bory and Dictyopteris polypodioides (A.P. De Candolle) J.V. Lamouroux, inhabiting respectively the infralittoral fringe and the upper infralittoral zone. Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites, found in almost all brown algal orders, that function as defense against grazers, epiphytes and UV radiation.
