Variability in δ13C values between individual Daphnia ephippia: Implications for palaeo-studies

The stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C value) of Daphnia spp. resting egg shells (ephippia) provides information on past changes in Daphnia diet. Measurements are typically performed on samples of ≥20 ephippia, which obscures the range of values associated with individual ephippia. Using a recently developed laser ablation-based technique, we perform multiple δ13C analyses on individual ephippia, which show a high degree of reproducibility (standard deviations 0.1–0.5‰). We further measured δ13C values of 13 ephippia from surface sediments of three Swiss lakes. Fruit physical, chemical and aromatic attributes of early, intermediate and late apricot cultivars.

BACKGROUND: In order to reach good fruit quality, apricots require a balance of sugars and acids as well as a strong apricot aroma. In this study, fruit quality of early, intermediate and late apricot cultivars was evaluated by measuring physical, chemical and olfactory attributes. Multivariate analysis of quality and aroma attributes was used to identify groups of similar cultivars and association with ripening season. RESULTS: Physical, chemical and aromatic attributes showed great variation amongcultivars but no relation to ripening season. Study objectives: The objective of this study was to determine differences in airway responsiveness to adenosine 5-monophosphate (AMP) between smokers and nonsmokers with allergic rhinitis. Methods: A total of 41 adults with allergic rhinitis (16 smokers and 25 nonsmokers) were challenged with increasing concentrations of methacholine and AMP. Abstract The objective of this study was to determine differences in airway sensitivity to adenosine 5′-monophosphate (AMP) between allergic rhinitis subjects with plateau and those without evidence of plateau on the concentration–response curves to methacholine. A total of 51 adults (38 subjects with allergic rhinitis and 13 healthy controls) were challenged with increasing concentrations of methacholine and AMP. Migration is widespread among vertebrates, yet bat migration has received little attention and only in the recent decades has a better understanding of it been gained. Migration can cause significant changes in behaviour and physiology, due to increasing energy demands and aerodynamic constraints.
