Is season of birth associated with multiple sclerosis?
2000
Objective - To compare the monthly distribution of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients' births with that of the Sicilian population. Background - Studies on the association between season of birth and risk of MS are scanty and controversial. Design and methods - Archives of the Institute of Neuropsychiatry of the Universities of Palermo and Catania were searched up to 1995 for definite MS patients (McDonald and Halliday criteria). The monthly distribution of MS patients' births (N = 965) was compared with that of the Sicilian population (N = 5,608,307). Results - The distribution of births among MS patients compared with the general population was not different when tested by the χ2 statistic …
Seasonal dependence in the solar neutrino flux
1999
MSW solutions of the solar neutrino problem predict a seasonal dependence of the zenith angle distribution of the event rates, due to the non-zero latitude at the Super-Kamiokande site. We calculate this seasonal dependence and compare it with the expectations in the no-oscillation case as well as just-so scenario, in the light of the latest Super-Kamiokande 708-day data. The seasonal dependence can be sizeable in the large mixing angle MSW solution and would be correlated with the day-night effect. This may be used to discriminate between MSW and just-so scenarios and should be taken into account in refined fits of the data.
Tropical marine climate during the late Paleozoic ice age using trace element analyses of brachiopods
2009
Abstract The late Paleozoic ice age can be considered an important analogue to the modern ice age, but comparisons between the two time intervals have been hampered by the difficulty of resolving climatic changes that occur over short (e.g., seasonal) time scales in the Paleozoic record. As a first step toward overcoming these limitations, this study employed Mg/Ca trace element ratios sampled across the growth bands of six specimens of the brachiopod Composita to assess differences in tropical marine mean temperature and seasonality in Visean and Moscovian time. These time intervals bracket the onset of the late Paleozoic ice age, which occurred in mid-Serpukhovian time, and thus provide a…
Within-lake dynamics in the similarity of parasite assemblages of perch (Perca fluviatilis).
2005
Although parasite communities have been studied extensively in recent years, spatial and temporal variation in factors affecting the communities has received less attention. This paper examined the similarity of parasite assemblages of perch (Perca fluviatilis) in 18 locations within a single lake in relation to geographical distance and temporal dynamics in the host and parasite populations. We expected that in the present study-scale where distinct but potentially interacting host subpopulations could occur, similarity of the assemblages could be affected by seasonal dynamics in host movements particularly during the spawning period. Parasite species showed differences in infection levels…
The activity of glutathione S-transferase in hepatopancreas of Procambarus clarkii: Seasonal variations and the influence of environmental pollutants
1991
Abstract 1. 1The glutathione S -transferase activity in hepatopancreas of the American red crayfish Procambarus clarkii after 15 days' acclimatization in tap water aquaria was measured in specimens collected monthly for a whole year, and shows seasonal variation. 2. 2. Previous data on the environmental pollution of Lake Albufera suggest a possible correlation with the activity tested in the different seasons of the year considering the results of non-acclimatized animals.
Seasonal variation of hypolaetin 8-glucoside inSideritis mugronensis borja
1990
A quantitative analysis of the antiinflammatory flavonoid hypolaetin 8-glucoside from Sideritis mugronensis during an annual growth cycle was carried out. After an irregular increase in spring, the maximum levels were reached and maintained in early summer samples.
Toward the definition of a carbon budget model: seasonal variation and temperature effect on respiration rate of vegetative and reproductive organs o…
2009
Summary This study, as a preliminary step toward the definition of a carbon budget model for pistachio trees (Pistacia vera L.), aimed at estimating and evaluating the dynamics of respiration of vegetative and reproductive organs of pistachio tree. Trials were performed in 2005 in a commercial orchard located in Sicily (370 m a.s.l.) on five bearing 20-year-old pistachio trees of cv. Bianca grafted onto Pistachio terebinthus L. Growth analyses and respiration measurements were done on vegetative (leaf) and reproductive (infructescence) organs during the entire growing season (April–September) at biweekly intervals. Results suggested that the respiration rates of pistachio reproductive and v…
The Seasonality Impact of the BTEX Pollution on the Atmosphere of Arad City, Romania
2021
Benzene, toluene, and total BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) concentrations registered for one year (2016) have been determined every month for one high-density traffic area. The assessment was performed in Arad City, Romania, to evaluate these pollutants and their influence on the inhabitants’ health. The contaminants were sampled using a static sampling method and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Benzene was the most dominant among the BTEX compounds—the average concentrations ranged from 18.00 ± 1.32 µg m−3 in December to 2.47 ± 0.74 µg m−3 in August. The average toluene concentration over the year was 4.36 ± 2.42 µg m−3 (with a maximum of 9…
One-year characterization of organic aerosol markers in urban Beijing: Seasonal variation and spatiotemporal comparison
2020
Abstract Organic aerosol (OA) is a major component of fine particulate matter (PM); however, only 10%–30% of OA have been identified as individual compounds, and some are used as markers to trace the sources and formation mechanisms of OA. The temporal and spatial coverage of these OA markers nonetheless remain inadequately characterized. This study presents a year-long measurement of 92 organic markers in PM2.5 samples collected at an urban site in Beijing from 2014 to 2015. Saccharides were the most abundant (340.1 ng m−3) species detected, followed by phthalic acids (283.4 ng m−3). In summer, high proportions (8%–24%) of phthalic acids, n-alkanes, fatty acids, and n-alcohols indicate dom…
Effects of precipitation seasonality, irrigation, vegetation cycle and soil type on enhanced weathering – modeling of cropland case studies across fo…
2022
Enhanced weathering (EW) is a promising strategy for carbon sequestration, but several open questions remain regarding the actual rates of dissolution in conditions of natural hydroclimatic variability in comparison to laboratory experiments. In this context, models play a pivotal role, as they allow exploring and predicting EW dynamics under different environmental conditions. Here a comprehensive hydro-biogeochemical model has been applied to four cropland case studies (i.e., Sicily and the Padan plain in Italy and California and Iowa in the USA) characterized by different rainfall seasonality, vegetation (i.e., wheat for Sicily and California and corn for the Padan plain and Iowa), and s…
