The concept of memory (memorial site) has gained crucial importance in recent years for the identification of places (areas) and in the affirmation of local identities. The memorial sites are areas where usually tragic events have occurred and resulted in a cultural change. This article is about the artist John Piper's participation in one of the programmes for the preservation of national heritage that were organised during the Second World War. It focuses on Piper's paintings and texts – notably the articles that he contributed to the Architectural Review – in order to illustrate the aesthetic controversy between modernism and tradition, abstraction and naturalism, which underpins the ambivalence of reconstruction.

Helena Radlińska była zasłużoną bohaterką “drugiej linii” podczas drugiej wojny światowej. Jej działalność była bardzo ważna dla cywilnego i wojskowego konspiracyjnego ruchu podziemnego. Organizowała konspiracyjne formy edukacyjne dla młodzieży i dorosłych, jak w szczególności kursy nauczycielskie, studia społeczne, kursy „mazurskie”. L’antropologo visse in pieno la sua formazione culturale all'interno del regime al quale aderì con convinzione e slancio, militando sempre nelle sue fazioni più radicali, condividendone fedelmente le scelte più tragiche come la guerra d’Etiopia, sottoscrivendo le leggi razziali, impegnandosi nella seconda guerra mondiale con le armi culturali dell’antisemitismo e della lotta senza tregua contro la democrazia.
