German and Austrian occupant literature on the Sami in Norway and Lapland – “Harmless” minority, a resource, and well-off “reindeer kings”

2020

Source at http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:jyu-202006234344. In previous research on the history of the Second World War in Finland and Norway, relations between the German and Austrian occupying forces and the Sami people have generally been considered to be good. The occupant gaze upon the Sami has been interpreted as exoticizing and “touristic”. Historical encounters and the Sami position in the literary discourse are discussed and explained in this article, using a selection of German and Austrian wartime and post-war literature. The discursive reading the sources bear evidence of multiple ways of relating to the Sami, from benign to racializing; from demeaning to one filled with surprise at un…

Landscapes of loss and destruction: : Sámi elders’ childhood memories of the second world war

2019

The so-called Lapland War between Finland and Germany at the end of the Second World War led to a mass-scale destruction of Lapland. Both local Finnish residents and the indigenous Sámi groups lost their homes, and their livelihoods suffered in many ways. The narratives of these deeply traumatic experiences have long been neglected and suppressed in Finland and have been studied only recently by academics and acknowledged in public. In this text, we analyze the interviews with four elders of one Sámi village, Vuotso. We explore their memories, from a child’s perspective, scrutinizing the narration as a multilayered affective process that involves sensual and embodied dimensions of memory. ©…

Ivy and Bones: ruins and reversibility during the Blitz

2012

"Ivy and bones: ruins and reversibility during the Blitz" examines how the representation of the ruins of the Blitz is informed by the aesthetic and semiotic tension between abstraction, modernist purity and picturesque accretion. Subsequently building on the notion of reversibility, it explores the way wartime destruction and/or cultural decline is recorded as well as counteracted and compensated for in works by Elizabeth Bowen, Herbert Furst, Claire Leighton, Rose Macaulay, John Piper, and Virginia Woolf. The trope of reversibility provides a template to consider some of the sites where aesthetic conflicts are re-enacted, from blitzed spaces to the printed page as threatened modernist art…

LU profesora Konstantīna Čakstes piemiņas plāksne

2020

Pēteris Čevers – no LU studenta līdz nacionālajam partizānam

2022

The article is a supplement to the biography of the professional Latvian officer Pēteris Čevers. Until now, little research has been done on the academic life of P. Čevers - his studies at the University of Latvia and his involvement in the life of the Latvian student fraternity Fraternitas Metropolitana. Based on the documents of the Latvian State Historical Archives and existing published research on P. Čevers as a Latvian national partisan, an innovative study of the unknown facts of P. Čevers personality, especially the internal problems of his student fraternal life and the maintaining of links with the University of Latvia through the Fraternitas Metropolitana, has been created. It al…

2014

The period that followed the Second World War marked a turning point for the building of our country. The compelling need, the desire to rebuild what had been destroyed and the desire to build structures using the techniques of contemporary manufacturing meant that the fifties and sixties were significant, also with regard to housing production, for the history of our country, from the point of view of both architectural and technical - constructive. The use of reinforced concrete, although already quite widespread before the war, he found the greatest statement both in the building residential use that in the sperimentation of large structures. The church buildings that were built in those…

Peaceful Foreign Policy and Remembrance of War Effort : The Conceptualisation of Willingness to Defend in Finland and Its Connections to Previous Arm…

2022

In Finland, a conceptualization of willingness to defend has been a traditional part of the defence-related debates and the state has vested interests to maintain the high level of willingness. This paper examines the connections to the Second World War in political discourse related to willingness to defend. Based on the analysis of political and societal debates, I will demonstrate that the Second World War serves as an historical experience for the understanding of the concept by offering an idea of individual sacrifice relevant to the survival of the state, as a prime example. peerReviewed

Działalność Zgromadzenia Misjonarzy Świętej Rodziny w Wieluniu

2021

Równolegle doszło do powołania nowicjatu zakonnego i szkoły misyjnej – ośmioletniego gimnazjum męskiego, do którego uczęszczali uczniowie poch…

Franciszkańska kuracja Serca Pana Jezusa w Gliwicach w latach 1925–1945

2016

Artykuł jest kontynuacją międzywojennej historii gliwickich franciszkanów i genezy powstania samodzielnej jednostki kościelnej w tzw. dzielnicy hutniczej, zamieszczonym w tomie 35 „Studiów Teologiczno-Historycznych Śląska Opolskiego” z 2015 r.
