Structural and in depth characterization of newly designed conducting/insulating TiN O /TiO2 multilayers obtained by one step LP-MOCVD growth

2001

Abstract TiNxOy/TiO2 multilayers have been grown by LP-MOCVD using titanium isopropoxide (TIP) precursor during the whole growth, but with an ammonia flow interrupted for the TiO2 layers. The one step growth process used to grow these structures allowed to stack the conducting and insulating layers without any growth breakdown. SIMS and TEM analyses showed the presence of an alternated insulating/conducting layers structure. Moreover, electrical measurements allowed to measure the dielectric part of insulating TiO2 stacked in these structures, whose permittivity was found to be about 80 for a MOS structure. Thus, such multilayers may lead to very promising applications in the microelectroni…

The ethnobotany, phytochemistry, and biological properties of genus Phagnalon (Asteraceae): a review

2022

The genus Phagnalon Cass., included within the Asteraceae family, has a wide distribution, expanding from Macaronesia in the West to the Himalayas in the East, from S. France and N. Italy to Ethiopia and Arabian Peninsula. Various species of Phagnalon have been used in the popular medicine of several countries as medicinal herbs and food. This literature review, the first one of the Phagnalon genus, includes publications with the word ‘Phagnalon’, and considers the extracts and the single metabolites identified, characterized, and tested to evaluate their biological potential. The extracts and the secondary metabolites, have a varied application spectrum at a biological level, with antimicr…

Statins and new-onset diabetes

2013

Statins are highly efficacious lipid modifying agents that reduce the risk for cardiovascular (CV) events in both primary and secondary prevention settings. However, statins affect molecular mechanisms which adversely impact on insulin sensitivity and β-cell function, thereby increasing risk for new onset diabetes mellitus (NOD). Defining the mechanisms involved is the focus of considerable current investigation. The statins reduce the risk for CV events in normoglycemic patients as well as in those with diabetes mellitus (DM) and their benefits outweigh the risk of inducing NOD. We review the clinical evidence for NOD with statin treatment, as well as the potential mechanisms involved. Our…

Phytotoxic dioxolanone-type secondary metabolites from Guignardia bidwellii.

2012

Phenguignardic acid was recently described as a phytotoxic secondary metabolite from submerged cultures of the grape black rot fungus Guignardia bidwellii. Since the production rate of this natural product in submerged culture is very low, fermentation optimisation was carried out. The optimisation of cultivation conditions led to the identification of seven secondary metabolites, structurally related to guignardic acid, a known secondary metabolite from Guignardia species containing a dioxolanone moiety. All metabolites presented here have not been described to date and are presumably biosynthesised via deamination products of amino acids, such as phenylalanine, valine, tyrosine, and alani…

Meeting the Discipline-Culture Framework of Physics Knowledge: A Teaching Experience in Italian Secondary School

2014

The paper deals with physics teaching/learning in high school. An investigation in three upper secondary school classes in Italy explored the reactions of students to a structuring lecture on optics within the discipline-culture (DC) framework that organises physics knowledge around four interrelated fundamental theories of light. The lecture presented optics as an unfolding conceptual discourse of physicists regarding the nature of light. Along with the knowledge constructed in a school course of a scientific lyceum, the students provided epistemological comments, displaying their perception of physics knowledge presented in the classroom. Students’ views and knowledge were investigated by…

Characterisation of structured thin films made from complex materials by photoabsorption spectromicroscopy

1998

Al3 and YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7. To investigate devices built from these complex materials we applied element-sensitive photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). Information about the chemical composition of the imaged sample can be obtained by PEEM via tuning the photon energy to X-ray absorption edges. To apply spectromicroscopy we acquired microscopic images using photon energies near and at the edges. Such images give the lateral distribution of a specific element. Microspectroscopy is performed by recording the intensity of the true secondary electrons in selected spots during a sweep of the photon energy. The main aim of our work was to observe oxygen-related defects and changes in the c…

Atomic physics studies at the gamma factory at CERN

2020

The Gamma Factory initiative proposes to develop novel research tools at CERN by producing, accelerating and storing highly relativistic, partially stripped ion beams in the SPS and LHC storage rings. By exciting the electronic degrees of freedom of the stored ions with lasers, high-energy narrow-band photon beams will be produced by properly collimating the secondary radiation that is peaked in the direction of ions' propagation. Their intensities, up to $10^{17}$ photons per second, will be several orders of magnitude higher than those of the presently operating light sources in the particularly interesting $\gamma$--ray energy domain reaching up to 400 MeV. This article reviews opportuni…

Single amino acids in the lumenal loop domain influence the stability of the major light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b complex.

2004

The major light-harvesting complex of photosystem II (LHCIIb) is one of the most abundant integral membrane proteins. It greatly enhances the efficiency of photosynthesis in green plants by binding a large number of accessory pigments that absorb light energy and conduct it toward the photosynthetic reaction centers. Most of these pigments are associated with the three transmembrane and one amphiphilic alpha helices of the protein. Less is known about the significance of the loop domains connecting the alpha helices for pigment binding. Therefore, we randomly exchanged single amino acids in the lumenal loop domain of the bacterially expressed apoprotein Lhcb1 and then reconstituted the muta…
