High temperature reactivity of materials under oxidizing atmospheres is based on the formation of protective oxide scales. The protectiveness is obtained when the thermally grown oxide scales are dense, continuous and adherent to the metallic substrates (even during thermal shocks); as a matter of fact, the growth of the scale has to be governed by diffusion of species across the growing scale. The diffusing species are coming from the substrate (metallic ions) and/or from the oxidizing atmosphere (oxygen ions). Multiphoton photoemission electron microscopy using femtosecond laser radiation

Abstract The interaction of intense, pulsed laser radiation with surfaces results in non-linear optical effects that are responsible for emission of electrons even if the photon energies are below the work function. In the present study, photoelectrons have been excited by means of femtosecond laser pulses from a frequency doubled Ti:sapphire laser with a photon energy of 3.1 eV. The spatial distribution of the photo emitted electrons was imaged using a photoemission electron microscope. All samples exhibit centres of enhanced second or higher order photoemission yield, so called ‘hot spots’. These ‘hot spots’ were preferentially excited with s-polarised light. Photoabsorption and MXCD in photoemission microscopy for characterisation of advanced materials

Abstract We applied chemical and magnetic sensitive photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) to investigate surfaces of advanced materials. PEEM at low photon energies provides a high spatial resolution, but suffers from the lack of information about the chemical composition of the imaged surface. Such information can be obtained by PEEM via tuning the photon energy to X-ray absorption edges. To apply spectromicroscopy we acquired and subtracted microscopic images using photon energies just below and at the edges. Radiofrequency thermoablation is a locoregional procedure based on the use of electromagnetic waves that induce movement and consequently the production of heat. This is the basis for the coagulative necrosis produced in the tissues. Resonant laser–SNMS for spatially resolved and element selective ultra-trace analysis of radionuclides

The newly developed resonant laser–SNMS system at the IRS Hannover combines the high spatial and decent mass resolution of a TOF-SIMS instrument with the element-selective process of resonant laser ionization. This setup was characterized by use of synthetic uranium, plutonium and technetium samples to prepare and demonstrate the performance for measurements on environmental samples. The laser–SNMS system will be applied for the detection, visualization and ultra-trace analysis of radionuclide containing nanoparticles in environmental samples with strongly reduced or even completely omitted chemical preparation. We show that any free product of two countable groups, one of them being infinite, admits a faithful and homogeneous action on the Random Graph. We also show that a large class of HNN extensions or free products, amalgamated over a finite group, admit such an action and we extend our results to groups acting on trees. Finally, we show the ubiquity of finitely generated free dense subgroups of the automorphism group of the Random Graph whose action on it have all orbits infinite.

To obtain data of the bradykinin B2 receptor's agonist binding site, we used a combined approach of affinity labeling and "immunoidentification" of receptor fragments generated by cyanogen bromide cleavage. Domain-specific antibodies to the various extracellular receptor domains were applied to detect receptor fragments with covalently attached [125I-Tyr8]bradykinin. As a cross-linker we used the homobifunctional reagent disuccinimidyl tartarate (DST), which reacts preferentially with primary amines. In order to generate antibodies suitable for immunological studies on beta-adrenoceptors constitutively expressed at low levels in cells or tissues we have produced fusion proteins of the amino- and carboxy-terminus, and the second extracellular loop of the human beta 1- or beta 2-adrenoceptors with bacterial glutathione-S-transferase in E. coli. Rabbit antibodies raised against these fusion proteins strongly reacted with intact human beta 1- or beta 2-adrenoceptors in a subtype- and domain-specific manner. Summary Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) causes premature death and loss of life expectancy worldwide. Its primary and secondary prevention can result in a significant number of years of life saved. Aim To assess how many years of life are lost after HCC diagnosis. Methods Data from 5346 patients with first HCC diagnosis were used to estimate lifespan and number of years of life lost after tumour onset, using a semi-parametric extrapolation having as reference an age-, sex- and year-of-onset-matched population derived from national life tables.
