Vassiliev invariants for braids on surfaces

2000

We show that Vassiliev invariants separate braids on a closed oriented surface, and we exhibit an universal Vassiliev invariant for these braids in terms of chord diagrams labeled by elements of the fundamental group of the considered surface.

Seifert manifolds admitting partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

2017

We characterize which 3-dimensional Seifert manifolds admit transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. In particular, a circle bundle over a higher-genus surface admits a transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism if and only if it admits an Anosov flow.

Surface homeomorphisms with zero dimensional singular set

1998

We prove that if f is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of a closed orientable surface M whose singular set is totally disconnected, then f is topologically conjugate to a conformal transformation.

Liberalising European electricity markets: opportunities and risks for a sustainable power sector

2003

The process of liberalising European electricity markets, encompassing a wide range of restructuring activities, has mainly been spurred by the attempt to increase the economic efficiency of the whole sector. This process might be used to trigger a development towards a sustainable power sector by increasing the use of renewable energy sources and enhancing energy efficiency on the supply and demand side. However, by taking a closer look at the current trends of the European electricity markets, it becomes obvious that the liberalisation not only implies opportunities but also risks for the creation of a sustainable power sector. Many of these risks are due to market distortions and imperfe…

Learning, teaching and assessment of second foreign languages in Swedish lower secondary school – dilemmas and prospects

2019

This paper presents an overview of second foreign language (SFL) education in Sweden, especially at lower secondary level. It offers a survey of the historical development of the study of other languages than English as well as a reflection over the current state of the subject. Currently, there is a shortage of research on the circumstances and conditions of the learning, teaching and assessment of the Swedish school subject Modern languages, as well as on young people’s proficiency in other languages than English in Sweden. In order to contribute to a knowledge base for further research, the current paper reviews work considering the Swedish context concerning: a) frame factors, policy is…

Promoting coordination in Norwegian health care1

2011

Introduction The Norwegian health care system is well organized within its two main sectors—primary health and long-term care on the one hand, and hospitals and specialist services on the other. However, the relation between them lacks mediating structures. Policy practice Enhancing coordination between primary and secondary health care has been central in Norwegian health care policy in the last decade. In 2003 a committee was appointed to identify coordination problems and proposed a lot of practical and organisational recommendations. It relied on an approach challenging primary and secondary health care in shared geographical regions to take action. However, these proposals were not imp…

The context of second foreign languages in Swedish secondary schools : results of a questionnaire to school leaders

2019

This article reports the results of a survey focusing on the educational context of second foreign languages (SFL) to which 147 Swedish secondary school leaders responded. The study aims to provide a picture of how SFLs like German, French and Spanish are organised in a representative selection of Swedish schools across the country. The results of the survey show that there are major differences between languages when it comes to the language offer and the number of pupils and teachers in the respective languages. Moreover, there are also important differences between schools, some of which can be related to educational, socio-economic and regional aspects of the responding schools. A gener…

Protein Kinase C-dependent Ubiquitination and Clathrin-mediated Endocytosis of the Cationic Amino Acid Transporter CAT-1*

2011

Cationic amino acid transporter 1 (CAT-1) is responsible for the bulk of the uptake of cationic amino acids in most mammalian cells. Activation of protein kinase C (PKC) leads to down-regulation of the cell surface CAT-1. To examine the mechanisms of PKC-induced down-regulation of CAT-1, a functional mutant of CAT-1 (CAT-1-HA-GFP) was generated in which a hemagglutinin antigen (HA) epitope tag was introduced into the second extracellular loop and GFP was attached to the carboxyl terminus. CAT-1-HA-GFP was stably expressed in porcine aorthic endothelial and human epithelial kidney (HEK) 293 cells. Using the HA antibody internalization assay we have demonstrated that PKC-dependent endocytosis…

Autoimmunity to the p53 protein is a feature of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) related to anti-DNA antibodies.

2001

The induction of anti-DNA autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients is problematic because mammalian DNA is poorly immunogenic at best. Here we demonstrate a chain of connected antibodies in SLE patient sera that could account for the induction of anti-DNA antibody, and possibly for some of the pathogenic features of SLE. We now report that SLE patients, in addition to anti-DNA, produce antibodies to the carboxy-terminal domain of the tumour suppressor molecule p53; this p53 domain recognizes damaged DNA. Hence, these anti-p53 antibodies could mimic damaged DNA immunologically. Indeed, SLE sera do contain anti-idiotypic antibodies to a prototypic anti-p53 antibody. Moreo…

In vitro T-cell immunogenicity of oligopeptides derived from the region 92-110 of the 16-kDa protein ofMycobacterium tuberculosis

2004

The 16-kDa protein of Mycobacterium tuberculosis provokes specific immune responses; it is thus a target for the development of peptide-based diagnostic reagents and subunit vaccines. Previous studies have demonstrated the presence of several regions containing murine and human T-cell epitopes. Within the 91–110 immunodominant domain, we found that peptides comprising the sequence of 91SEFAYGSFVRTVSL104 elicit specific T-cell responses in both human T-cell clones and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from PPD+ (purified protein derivative) individuals. Elongation of this peptide towards the C-terminal end did not provide more effective peptides, but the removal of residue 91Se…
