Repositioning teachers as assessors : Compromised aspirations and contested agency

The global trend to emphasise assessment for learning brings up the issue of repositioning teachers in assessment. The contemporary curricular policy reforms encourage teachers to take an agentic role in assessment, but multiple dimensions of the environment affect its realisation. The Co-developmental Dynamic of Sport and School Burnout among Student-Athletes : The Role of Achievement Goals

Student‐athletes who strive for success in high‐level sports while pursuing upper secondary education may be prone to sport and school burnout. This study examined the co‐developmental dynamic of sport and school burnout in Finnish adolescent student‐athletes (Ntime 1 = 391; Ntime 2 = 373) across the first year of upper secondary school using cross‐lagged structural equation modeling (SEM). Changes in surface stress, morphology and chemical composition of silica and silicon nitride surfaces during the etching by gaseous HF acid

International audience; HF acid attack of SiO2 and Si3N4 substrates is analyzed to improve the sensitivity of a sensor based on inicrocantilever. Ex situ analysis of the etching using XPS, SIMS and AFM show significant changes in the anisotropy and the rate of the etching of the oxides on SiO2 and Si3N4 surface. Those differences influence the kinetic evolution of the plastic bending deflection of the cantilever coated with SiO2 and Si3N4 layer, respectively. Optimal recovery of a radiating source with multiple frequencies along one line

We study an inverse problem where an unknown radiating source is observed with collimated detectors along a single line and the medium has a known attenuation. The research is motivated by applications in SPECT and beam hardening. If measurements are carried out with frequencies ranging in an open set, we show that the source density is uniquely determined by these measurements up to averaging over levelsets of the integrated attenuation. This leads to a generalized Laplace transform. We also discuss some numerical approaches and demonstrate the results with several examples.

Staphylococcal protein A (SpA) is a cell-wall-bound pathogenicity factor from the bacterium Staphylcoccus aureus. It exhibits tight binding to many IgG, IgA and IgM molecules at site(s) different from antigen-combining site. Because of their small size and immunoglobulin (IgG)-binding activities, domains of protein A are important targets for protein engineering efforts and for the development of computational approaches for de novo protein folding.

Targeted solid phase fermentation of the soil dwelling fungus Gymnascella dankaliensis yields new brominated tyrosine-derived alkaloids

Seven new brominated tyrosine-derived alkaloids, gymnastatins T–Y (1–6) and dankastatin D (7), together with three known likewise brominated analogues gymnastatins I–K (8–10) were isolated from the soil fungus Gymnascella dankaliensis through fermentation on solid rice medium following addition of NaBr. None of these compounds were detected when the fungus was cultured on rice that either lacked NaBr or that contained NaCl instead, indicating a remarkable plasticity of the fungal secondary metabolism. Drug Binding Properties of Tyrosine-Modified Human Serum Albumin

Human serum albumin (HSA) has only a small number of specific binding sites for drugs. There are facts indicating that tyrosine residues may be involved in these binding sites. Thus we modified HSA with tetranitromethan, a reagent specific for tyrosine residues in proteins. As derived from an UV-absorption quotient three albumins with a degree of modification of two, five and eight residues per molecule were obtained. Only for the albumin with eight residues modified a small reduction of ordered secondary structure was found.

Can female preference explain sexual dichromatism in the pied flycatcher, Ficedula hypoleuca?

How important female choice is for the evolution of male secondary sexual characteristics is controversial. Two field and one laboratory experiment, using the pied flycatcher, were performed to test the female choice aspect of sexual selection. In addition, non-manipulative data from 5 years are presented. The observational data suggest a slight preference for dark males by females but in field experiments in which males had territories at random sites (i.e. they did not choose a territory) or the colour of concurrently arriving males was altered, there was no preference for darker ones. Holocene vegetation and fire dynamics in the supra-mediterranean belt of the Nebrodi Mountains (Sicily, Italy)

High-resolution pollen, macrofossil and charcoal data, combined with accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dating and multivariate analysis, were used to reconstruct Holocene vegetation and fire dynamics at Urio Quattrocchi, a small lake in the supra-mediterranean belt in the Nebrodi Mountains of Sicily (Italy). The data suggest that after 10 000 cal a BP increasing moisture availability supported closed forests with deciduous (Quercus cerris, Fagus sylvatica and Fraxinus spp.) and evergreen (Quercus ilex) species.
