Tumour-derived and host-derived nitric oxide differentially regulate breast carcinoma metastasis to the lungs.
2004
To study the role of nitric oxide (NO) in lung metastasis of breast carcinoma, we isolated two cell clones (H and J) from the parental EMT-6 murine breast carcinoma cell line, based on their differential NO production. In vitro, EMT-6 J cells, but not EMT-6H cells, constitutively expressed inducible NO synthase (NOS II) and secreted high levels of NO. IL-1beta increased NO production in both clones, and TNF-alpha had a synergistic effect on IL-1beta-induced NO production, but NO production by EMT-6 J cells was always higher than by EMT-6H cells. Proliferation, survival and adhesion to lung-derived endothelial cells of both clones were similar and were not affected by NO. In vivo, both clone…
Specialization and interaction strength in a tropical plant–frugivore network differ among forest strata
2011
The degree of interdependence and potential for shared coevolutionary history of frugivorous animals and fleshy-fruited plants are contentious topics. Recently, network analyses revealed that mutualistic relationships between fleshy-fruited plants and frugivores are mostly built upon generalized associations. However, little is known about the determinants of network structure, especially from tropical forests where plants' dependence on animal seed dispersal is particularly high. Here, we present an in-depth analysis of specialization and interaction strength in a plant-frugivore network from a Kenyan rain forest. We recorded fruit removal from 33 plant species in different forest strata (…
Dry matter accumulation and seasonal partitioning in mature Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. fruiting trees
2014
Aim of this study was to understand the allocation of biomass into different canopy and root components and to measure the stem area index and its partitioning by cladode functionality (age), for fruiting Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) Gialla trees, spaced 6x5 m apart and trained to a globe. The net primary productivity (NPP), calculated taking into account dry weight gain for above-ground vegetative components of OFI trees was 3.6 t C ha –1 . Including the fruit component and 1 st flush current-year cladodes, NPP of above-ground components becomes 12 t ha –1 , equivalent to 5.4 t C ha –1 . Current-year cladodes were the highest C sink (49% of total annual C fixed in the canopy), secondary grow…
Una propuesta sobre enseñanza de la relatividad en el bachillerato como motivación para el aprendizaje de la física
2007
Relativity is a very important part of modern physics. In this paper we analyze the teaching and learning of the theory of relativity in secondary education and we show some reasoned arguments against traditional methods to teach it. Finally, a didactic proposal for the teaching of relativity is presented; it comes as a conclusion that it is possible a suitable teaching of the principles of relative which should bring into the students a change in attitude, concepts and methodology.
A bioactive designer cytokine for human hematopoietic progenitor cell expansion
1997
Efficient expansion of hematopoietic progenitor cells requires, at least, the simultaneous stimulation of the receptors c-kit and gp130. While c-kit is activated by SCF; gp130, in cells which do not express sufficient amounts of IL-6R, can be activated by the complex of soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R) and IL-6. The therapeutic use of IL-6/sIL-6R, however, has been hampered by the high concentrations of the sIL-6R protein required. We have designed a fusion protein of sIL-6R and IL-6, linked by a flexible peptide chain, that was expressed to high levels. On gp130 expressing cells the fusion protein turned out to be fully active at 100 to 1,000-fold lower concentration than the combination of unlinked…
HERS study disturbs hormonal replacement therapy
2000
Cardiovascular protection of hormonal replacement therapy was considered a fact. The effects of estrogens on lipid levels and vascular health gave biological support to estrogen cardioprotection. The recently published HERS study showing no protective effects of estrogen and progesterone replacement therapy on the risk of myocardial infarction or coronary deaths is provoking perplexity. These surprising results may have several causes such as the use of progesterone, the associated use of cardioprotective agents or the short observation period. However, the study results scope is rectricted to secondary prevention. These cannot be extrapolated to frequent conditions of postmenopausal women …
