On James Hyde's example of non-orderable subgroup of $\mathrm{Homeo}(D,\partial D)$

In [Ann. Math. 190 (2019), 657-661], James Hyde presented the first example of non-left-orderable, finitely generated subgroup of $\mathrm{Homeo}(D,\partial D)$, the group of homeomorphisms of the disk fixing the boundary. This implies that the group $\mathrm{Homeo}(D,\partial D)$ itself is not left-orderable. We revisit the construction, and present a slightly different proof of purely dynamical flavor, avoiding direct references to properties of left-orders. Our approach allows to solve the analogue problem for actions on the circle.
The solution to a conjecture of Tits on the subgroup generated by the squares of the generators of an Artin group

It was conjectured by Tits that the only relations amongst the squares of the standard generators of an Artin group are the obvious ones, namely that a^2 and b^2 commute if ab=ba appears as one of the Artin relations. In this paper we prove Tits' conjecture for all Artin groups. More generally, we show that, given a number m(s)>1 for each Artin generator s, the only relations amongst the powers s^m(s) of the generators are that a^m(a) and b^m(b) commute if ab=ba appears amongst the Artin relations.

Exam results show that many Norwegian students lack communicative competence in their second foreign language. This study investigates Spanish language instruction in Norway, in particular Spanish teachers’ opinions about grammar teaching, and why and how grammar is taught in lower and upper secondary school. Furthermore, the study explores whether common grammar teaching approaches are primarily explicit (rules provided) or implicit (rules not provided), inductive (language first) or deductive (rules first), and whether the language of instruction is primarily Norwegian or Spanish. This article intends to explore the relationship between CLIL and literary education by considering the results of a case study involving the teaching of foreign literatures from an intercultural perspective in Italian secondary schools. In the first part we introduce a model of literary and intercultural communicative competence and in the second part we present a case study implemented in three secondary schools in Northern Italy. This research investigates the effect of social and school processes on explanation of the achievement's differences between girls and boys in PE, particularly when they are assessed in team sports in secondary education. The performances of girls often are lower than those of boys. Traditionally, the differentiated performances may be attributed to physiological or sociological reasons. The classical concept of mass: theoretical difficulties and students’ definitions

An analysis of the concepts of mass in classical physics on the basis of their historical, philosophical and semantic connotations is given. A classification of the most current definitions of mass is proposed from its physical representation and topic area. The definitions of mass, and some related issues, given by several groups of secondary school students are analysed. The results seem to confirm a generalized qualitative‐teleological view of scientific concepts in contrast to the more orthodox formal‐quantitative formulation of physics.

Abstract The paper discusses teaching materials on thermodynamics, designed and implemented in 5 classes of scientifically-oriented secondary schools in Italy (grade 12). The materials are designed to: i) foster conceptual understanding; ii) create a learning environment rich enough to enable each student to find a personal way for appropriating content knowledge.
