Nanoelectrospray with ion-trap mass spectrometry for the determination of beta-casomorphins in derived milk products.

2009

Beta-casomorphins (b-CMs) are bioactive peptides derived from casein with opioid agonist effects similar to morphine. The use of electrospray (ESI) with quadrupole ion-trap mass spectrometry (QIT-MS) for these compounds in two matrices, cheese and milk, was examined. It was compared to a liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and a "soft" ionisation technique, NanoMate, with selected ion monitoring (SIM), which are unreliable for the determination of trace casomorphins in derived milk products. b-CM mass fragmentation pathways were done for the four most common b-CMs: beta-casomorphin (1-5) bovine (b-CM-5), beta-casomorphin (1-7) bovine (b-CM-7), [D-Ala2, D-Pro4,Ty…

2019

This research focuses on another research conducted in a bilingual educational context between Spanish and Valencian, with secondary school students, as is the case in the city of Valencia. In this context, the influence of the Valencian language is not as strong as in other areas of the Valencian Community, due to the presence of second and third generation speakers from Spanish-speaking contexts. In this way, we aim to check if the modality of schooling, carried out by students at the beginning and end of the secondary stage, between the Teaching Program in Valencian and the Progressive Incorporation Program, has some influence on their vocabulary available in Spanish.

Influence of music on the emotions perceived in the students of secondary and baccalaureate education

2020

Associations between observed patterns of classroom interactions and teacher wellbeing in lower secondary school

2019

Classroom observations and teacher self-reports were used to examine the relationships between patterns of teacherestudent interactions and the wellbeing of Norwegian lower secondary school teachers. Latent profile analysis identified four subgroups. Teacherestudent interactions and the teachers' wellbeing were inter-related in that teachers who were observed to be high in all the interaction domains (Emotional Support, Classroom Organization, and Instructional Support) perceived themselves as having high job satisfaction. The results showed that improving teachers’ wellbeing has the potential to improve teacherestudent interactions and vice versa. The study also discusses the use of classr…

The Implementation of Dual VET in Spain: An Empirical Analysis

2019

This paper provides a brief overview of how Dual VET was implemented in the Spanish VET system. Dual VET was first regulated in Spain by the end of 2012 with the aim to replace the existing work experience module (FCT) within formal VET. However, companies have hardly contributed to its development, and the educational administrations that mandated it did not support its anchorage in the economy, while forcing VET schools and teachers to introduce it. This has resulted in an example of how not to implement educational reforms. We will use our own empirical research as well as secondary analysis of empirical studies to analyze the views of VET teachers on the whole process and the added valu…

Reversible neural stem cell niche dysfunction in a model of multiple sclerosis

2011

Objective The subventricular zone (SVZ) of the brain constitutes a niche for neural stem and progenitor cells that can initiate repair after central nervous system (CNS) injury. In a relapsing-remitting model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the neural stem cells (NSCs) become activated and initiate regeneration during acute disease, but lose this ability during the chronic phases of disease. We hypothesized that chronic microglia activation contributes to the failure of the NSC repair potential in the SVZ. Methods Using bromodeoxyuridine injections at different time points during EAE, we quantified the number of proliferating and differentiating progenitors, and evaluate…

The effects of armed conflict on schooling in Sub-Saharan Africa

2012

In the past decades, most of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been affected by armed conflicts. By means of a time-series cross-sectional (TSCS) database, we attempt to measure the impact of war on a sample of 43 countries in Africa from 1950 to 2010. These conflicts, and especially civil wars, are shown to have a strong negative effect on the educational performances of the countries studied. The rate of children not attending school, as well as secondary school enrollment rates, seems particularly sensitive to periods of conflict. It also appears that government expenditures in social sectors including education are a positive factor in increasing school enrollment. In contrast, m…
