Rapid evolution of translational control mechanisms in RNA genomes

1997

We have introduced 13 base substitutions into the coat protein gene of RNA bacteriophage MS2. The mutations, which are clustered ahead of the overlapping lysis cistron, do not change the amino acid sequence of the coat protein, but they disrupt a local hairpin, which is needed to control translation of the lysis gene. The mutations decreased the phage titer by four orders of magnitude but, upon passaging, the virus accumulated suppressor mutations that raised the fitness to almost wild-type level. Analysis of the pseudorevertants showed that the disruption of the local hairpin, controlling expression of the lysis gene, had apparently been so complete that its restoration by chance mutations…

Stress responses in citrus peel: Comparative analysis of host responses to Huanglongbing disease and puffing disorder

2015

Abstract A comparison between transcriptomic responses to puffing disorder and Huanglongbing disease was conducted to decipher differences and similarities in gene and pathway regulation induced by abiotic (puffing) and biotic stresses (Huanglongbing) in citrus peel tissues. We functionally analyzed two previously published datasets: the first obtained for the study of puffing disorder using an Affymetrix citrus microarray and the second consisting of a deep sequencing analysis of symptomatic responses to Huanglongbing disease. Transcriptomic data were mined using bioinformatic tools to highlight genes and pathways playing a key role in modulating responses to different types of stress in c…

Codon composition, GC content and local RNA secondary structures can have a profound effect on gene expression, and mutations affecting these parameters, even though they do not alter the protein sequence, are not neutral in terms of selection. Although evidence exists that, in some cases, selection favours more stable RNA secondary structures, we currently lack a concrete idea of how many genes are affected within a species, and whether this is a universal phenomenon in nature. We searched for signs of structural selection in a global manner, analysing a set of 1 million coding sequences from 73 species representing all domains of life, as well as viruses, by means of our newly developed s…

Inverted Repeats in Viral Genomes

2004

We investigate 738 complete genomes of viruses to detect the presence of short inverted repeats. The number of inverted repeats found is compared with the prediction obtained for a Bernoullian and for a Markovian control model. We find as a statistical regularity that the number of observed inverted repeats is often greater than the one expected in terms of a Bernoullian or Markovian model in several of the viruses and in almost all those with a genome longer than 30,000 bp.

Long-Term Observations of Soil Mesofauna

2010

General problems connected with planning, sampling, and data processing of long-term research of soil mesofauna are discussed, based on two case studies: (i) the Bremen study of predatory mites (Gamasina) covering 20 years of secondary succession on a ruderal site in northern Germany and (ii) the Mazsalaca study of the effects of climate warming on Collembola of coniferous stands in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Latvia, covering 11 years. The findings from both sites are embedded in an array of environmental data. The results from Bremen document the asynchrony of different biota in successional dynamics. The long-lasting increase of the species numbers of soil predatory mites (Gamas…

A comprehensive fracture prevention strategy in older adults : The European union geriatric medicine society (EUGMS) statement

2016

Published also in Aging Clinical and Experimental Research, Vol.28, No.4, WOS: 000379034800030 Prevention of fragility fractures in older people has become a public health priority, although the most appropriate and cost-effective strategy remains unclear. In the present statement, the Interest group on falls and fracture prevention of the European union geriatric medicine society (EUGMS), in collaboration with the International association of gerontology and geriatrics for the European region (IAGG-ER), the European union of medical specialists (EUMS), the Fragility fracture network (FFN), the International osteoporosis foundation (IOF) - European society for clinical and economic aspects …

Daily physical activity in Finnish adolescents with long term illnesses or disabilities: psychosocial associations with participation in sports club

2016

 Background:
Physical activity (PA) in adolescence with long term illnesses or disabilities (LTID) is a public health concern. One way of increasing PA is through participation in sports clubs. Since sports clubs are organised and regular, there are expected to be differences in motivation for physical activity between adolescents that are members and non-members. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of psychosocial factors on sports club membership and daily PA.
 Methods:
Finnish adolescents with self-reported LTID (n=1006) took part in the WHO collaborative Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study in 2002 and 2010. Daily self-reported moder…
