Detection and characterization of Human caliciviruses associated with sporadic acute diarrhea in adults in Djibouti (horn of Africa).

2008

International audience; Recent advances in molecular diagnostics have allowed us to recognize Human caliciviruses (HuCVs) as important agents of acute diarrhea in industrialized countries. Their prevalence and genetic diversity in developing countries remains unknown. We report on the characterization of HuCVs among adults presenting acute diarrheas in Djibouti; 108 stool samples collected were screened by EIA, RTPCR, or cell cultures for the group A Rotaviruses, Adenoviruses, Astroviruses, and HuCVs, which were further characterized by genotyping. Among stool samples screened for HuCVs, 25.3% were positive. The other enteric viruses were less prevalent. The 11 HuCV strains sequenced reveal…

Contact with attractive women affects the release of cortisol in men

2010

Previous studies have shown that situations relevant for human mating can affect the levels of many hormones. This study focused on the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis by measuring salivary cortisol levels in 84 young men prior to and after a period of short social contact with a woman or man. Results showed that after contact with another man the cortisol levels of the participants declined according to the circadian release pattern of cortisol. However, cortisol levels in men declined less when they had contact with a woman. Furthermore, cortisol levels of men increased when they perceived the woman with whom they had contact as attractive. Our findings provide indirect evidence for t…

Role of meprins to protect ileal mucosa of Crohn's disease patients from colonization by adherent-invasive E. coli

2011

Ileal lesions in Crohn's disease (CD) patients are colonized by pathogenic adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) able to adhere to and invade intestinal epithelial cells (IEC), and to survive within macrophages. The interaction of AIEC with IEC depends on bacterial factors mainly type 1 pili, flagella, and outer membrane proteins. In humans, proteases can act as host defence mechanisms to counteract bacterial colonization. The protease meprin, composed of multimeric complexes of the two subunits alpha and beta, is abundantly expressed in IECs. Decreased levels of this protease correlate with the severity of the inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The aim of the pre…

Oxidative stress in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws

2013

Objectives To analyze whether oxidative stress (OS) changes are present in patients with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) versus controls. Materials and Methods Oxidative stress was analyzed in serum and unstimulated saliva of three groups: Group 1 consisted of 24 patients who had been treated with intravenous bisphosphonates (ivBPs) and developed BRONJ, group 2 consisted of 20 patients who had received ivBPs and did not develop BRONJ, and group 3 comprised 17 control subjects. Reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), oxidized glutathione (GSSG), and 8–oxo-7,8-dihydro-2-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG) levels, as well as the GSSG/GSH ratio, were measured. Results Me…

Defensive secretion of Therea petiveriana: chemical identification and evidence of an alarm function

2002

0098-0331 (Print) Journal Article; The volatile constituents of the supposed defensive secretions of the glandular pouches of the adults of both sexes of the cockroach Therea petiveriana have been shown to contain N-3-methylbutylacetamide (MBA) and N-3-methylbutylpropanamide (MBP), which represented 60% of the volatile fraction. The other 40% included acidic, aromatic, and aldehydic compounds. Behavioral experiments demonstrated that the secretion acts as an alarm pheromone for adults.

Isolation and characterization of maerophage-derived C1q and its similarities to serum C1q

1986

Recently, we have shown that the collagen-like, Fc-recognizing subcomponent C1q of the first complement component is synthesized by human, guinea pig and mouse peritoneal macrophages. To test whether macrophages may contribute to the serum pool of C1q, C1q was purified from guinea pig serum and from guinea pig peritoneal macrophage supernatants and compared for similarities. Both molecules had a similar sedimentation rate (macrophage C1q: 11.3 S, serum C1q: 11.2 S) and showed on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under reducing conditions three identical bands with molecular weights of Mr, 29 000, Mr, 27 000 and Mr 23 000 for the A, B and C chains, respectively. Both …

Diurnal cortisol secretion and health-related quality of life in healthy older people

2021

Abstract Several studies have demonstrated that a dysregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is related to worse health status (e.g., depression, posttraumatic stress, or diabetes, among others). However, less is known about the association between the individual's perception of their own health status and HPA-axis functioning in healthy older people. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between HPA-axis functioning and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in healthy older people. To do this, 140 healthy older people (69 men and 71 women) from 56 to 76 years old collected eight saliva samples on two consecutive weekdays to measure the diurnal cortisol c…

Interferon-Alpha-2-Induced Stimulation of ACTH and Cortisol Secretion in Man

1991

Short-term effects of interferon-alpha 2 on plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol were measured in man in relation to interferon absorption. Interferon-alpha 2 was given subcutaneously at a dose of 3 x 10(6) IU at 17.00 h to 2 female and 5 male patients who suffered from chronic hepatitis B infection and who had not previously been treated with interferon. Plasma levels of ACTH, cortisol and interferon-alpha were determined at 30-min intervals between 16.00 and 24.00 h. In each patient a similar cortisol, ACTH and interferon-alpha profile was determined on a day, when no interferon-alpha treatment was given. Interferon-alpha plasma levels peaked around 21…

Suppressed Levels of Serum Cortisol Following High-Dose Oral Dexamethasone Administration Differ between Healthy Postmenopausal Females and Patients …

2001

Hypercortisolism and glucocorticoid treatment, even in a low dose or administered topically, may influence bone metabolism. It was the aim of this study to investigate whether there might be differences in the regulation of endogenous cortisol secretion between patients with established primary vertebral osteoporosis and healthy controls. Suppressed morning serum cortisol concentrations in a 3 mg dexamethasone overnight suppression test were compared in well-defined healthy postmenopausal women (n = 149) and osteoporotic patients classified as having established primary vertebral osteoporosis with no clinical features of hypercortisolism (n = 78). Suppressed cortisol in the healthy controls…

Glucagon-like peptide-1 modulates neurally evoked mucosal chloride secretion in guinea pig small intestine in vitro

2011

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) acts at the G protein-coupled receptor, GLP-1R, to stimulate secretion of insulin and to inhibit secretion of glucagon and gastric acid. Involvement in mucosal secretory physiology has received negligible attention. We aimed to study involvement of GLP-1 in mucosal chloride secretion in the small intestine. Ussing chamber methods, in concert with transmural electrical field stimulation (EFS), were used to study actions on neurogenic chloride secretion. ELISA was used to study GLP-1R effects on neural release of acetylcholine (ACh). Intramural localization of GLP-1R was assessed with immunohistochemistry. Application of GLP-1 to serosal or mucosal sides of fla…
