Asthma control in severe asthmatics under treatment with omalizumab: A cross-sectional observational study in Italy
2015
Few data are available on the proportion of asthmatics achieving a good asthma control (according GINA guidelines) and on the level of airway inflammation during omalizumab treatment. The aim of this cross-sectional national observational study was to assess the level of control (according to GINA guidelines) achieved in a group of asthmatics on omalizumab treatment, and to characterize the factors that influence the lack of control. We studied 306 asthmatics under omalizumab treatment for a median of 32 months (range 4-120). The level of control according to GINA was good in 25.2%, partial in 47.1% and poor in 24.5% of patients (data were missing for the remaining 3.2%). Comparison between…
Analysis of risk factors for neurological dysfunction in patients with acute aortic dissection type A: data from the German Registry for Acute Aortic…
2012
OBJECTIVES: Acute aortic dissection type A (AADA) is associated with major adverse events, such as transient or persistent neurological dysfunction (ND), which may be patient-, disease- or surgery-related. There is a lack of consensus regarding risk factors for ND in AADA patients. The aim of this study was to analyse and identify risk factors for new postoperative ND after aortic repair for AADA. METHODS: Between July 2006 and June 2010, 2137 AADA patients were enrolled in the multi-centre, prospective German Registry of AADA (GERAADA). Perioperative data were prospectively gathered from 50 institutes in Austria, Switzerland and Germany, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was pe…
Essential elements of professional nursing environments in Primary Care and their influence on the quality of care.
2017
OBJECTIVES: Nursing work environments are key determinants of care quality. Our study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of nursing environments in primary care settings in the Canary Islands, and identify crucial components of such environments to improve quality. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional study in primary care organisations using the Practice Environment Scale - Nursing Work Index tool. We collected sociodemographic variables, scores, and selected the essential items conducive to optimal care. Appropriate parametric and non-parametric statistical tests were used to analyse relations between variables (CI = 95%, error = 5%). RESULTS: One hundred and forty-four nurses partic…
Determinants of physical activity in daily life in candidates for lung transplantation
2012
BACKGROUND: Participation in daily physical activity (PA) has never been objectively assessed in candidates for lung transplantation (LTx). The main research questions were: 1) How active are LTx-candidates in daily life? 2) What are determinants of activity behavior before LTX? METHODS: Ninety-six candidates for LTx (diagnosis of COPD or interstitial lung disease; mean age 55 ± 7 years) underwent measurements of PA, pulmonary function, 6-min walking distance (6MWD), muscle force and health-status (SF-36 scale). RESULTS: Patients were markedly inactive (5% of waking hours walking, 26% standing and 69% sedentary). Backward multiple regression identified 6MWD (expressed as % of predicted valu…
Bloating is associated with worse quality of life, treatment satisfaction, and treatment responsiveness among patients with constipation-predominant …
2016
Background The management of bloating is unclear and its relationship with patients' well-being and treatment satisfaction independent of other abdominal symptoms is uncharacterized. We evaluated the association of bloating with patient-reported outcomes. Methods Thirty-nine centers for functional gastrointestinal disorders joined the laxative inadequate relief survey. We enrolled 2203 consecutive outpatients with functional constipation (FC) or constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) in two cross-sectional waves. Both wave 1 and 2 included the SF-12, the patient assessment of constipation-symptoms (PAC-SYM), and the treatment satisfaction questionnaire for medication (TSQ…
Quality of life during one year of postoperative prophylactic drug therapy after intestinal resection in Crohn's patients: Results of the APPRECIA tr…
2019
Background: In APPRECIA trial, Crohn's disease (CD) patients undergoing intestinal resection were randomized to postoperative adalimumab (ADA) or azathioprine (AZA). Aims: To evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in APPRECIA trial. Methods: HRQoL was evaluated using disease-specific shortened Spanish version of the IBDQ (SIBDQ-9) and generic European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaires, completed at baseline and at weeks 24 and 52. Results: Sixty-one patients (37 ADA and 24 AZA) had evaluable data for HRQoL. Patients treated with ADA or AZA had significant improvement from baseline to weeks 24 and 52 in SIBDQ-9 and EQ-5D (p < 0.001 and p = 0.006 for all comparisons…
Perceived quality of life in partners of patients undergoing treatment in somatic health, mental health, or substance use disorder units: a cross-sec…
2017
Background This study explores (1) differences in socio-demographic, social/familial, and health variables and perceived quality of life (QoL) among partners of patients with somatic illness, mental illness, or substance use disorder (SUD); and (2) identifies factors associated with QoL. Methods Participants (N = 213) in this cross-sectional study were recruited from inpatient or outpatient services in five hospitals in Norway, 2013–2014. QoL was measured by the QoL-5, a generic five-item questionnaire. Differences between groups were examined using Chi-square for categorical variables and Kruskal-Wallis for contiuous variables. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine facto…
Knowledge about tuberculosis among undergraduate health care students in 15 Italian universities: a cross-sectional study
2014
Background: The Italian Study Group on Hospital Hygiene of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health conducted a multicentre survey aiming to evaluate undergraduate health care students’ knowledge of tuberculosis and tuberculosis control measures in Italy. Methods: In October 2012–June 2013, a sample of medical and nursing students from 15 Italian universities were enrolled on a voluntary basis and asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire investigating both general knowledge of tuberculosis (aetiology, clinical presentation, outcome, screening methods) and personal experiences and practices related to tuberculosis prevention. Data were analysed through multiv…
Long-term outcome of patients with or without osseointegrated implants after resection of mandibular ameloblastoma and reconstruction with vasculariz…
2018
BACKGROUND: The optimal management after the resection of mandibular ameloblastoma has been very challenging to surgeons. The aim of this study is to evaluate the functional, aesthetic, and quality of life outcomes of patients who had a segmental mandibular resection and immediate reconstruction with or without osseointegrated implants. METHOD: Patients' demographics, tumor characteristics, treatment, and complications were retrieved. Patients were divided into two groups: dental rehabilitated vs. nondental rehabilitated depending on the placement of osseointegrated implants followed by an implanted-retained prosthesis. Functional outcomes and quality of life were assessed using the Perform…
