Central, Eastern and East-Central Europle: on the History and the Current State of Conceptualization and Demarcation of Concepts
2019
The article is devoted to a historical overview and discussion of the current understanding and demarcation of the concepts “Central Europe”, “Eastern Europe” and “Central Eastern Europe”. The analysis is performed from a descriptive and comparative point of view, including a step‑by‑step generalization and separation of the above concepts and the verification of how natural, artificial or instrumental their character is, as well as by analysing their contrastive properties. In conclusion, the author has argued that the integration / disintegration and democratization / autocratization processes in the countries that used to be or now constitute different sub‑regions of Europe during the 20…
Ocena współczesnej kultury Zachodu w nauczaniu Benedykta XVI (Josepha Ratzingera)
2021
The Assessment of the Contemporary Western Culture in the Teaching of Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger)
The article consists of two parts. In the first one, the authors pointed out an argument in the social sciences concerning ability to reasonably use the „culture” concept in scientific discourse. In the second one, they analyzed opinions Benedict XVI ( Joseph Ratzinger) expressed about present condition of the Western culture. Views of this figure were selected to study due to recognizing significant influential role the Pope plays in the public sphere. In the opinion of Benedict XVI, today there are two cultures of the West that coexist: rational Christian culture and Enlightenment (…
Has Multiculturalism Failed in Europe? Migration Policies, State of Emergency, and Their Impact on Migrants’ Identities in Italy
2014
This chapter analyzes migration policies in Italy within the larger frame of the debate on multiculturalism and its failure in Europe. The first part focuses on the exceptional flow of migrants that after the recent conflicts in Northern Africa was directed toward Europe across the Italian coast. The emergency raised issues for the defense of territories, social security, and preservation of identity. The author demonstrates the inefficiency of the Italian migration and emergency policies that has been adopted at the arrival of undocumented migrants from Northern Africa in 2011. The chapter uses the case of Italy to show the weakness of Europe in developing effective forms of coexistence an…
Supervisor leadership style, employee regulatory focus, and leadership performance: A perspectivism approach
2019
[EN] Drawing on regulatory focus theory, this research proposes that transformational leadership performance depends on followers' circumstances. The analysis of 125 people from two Spanish service firms reveals that, apart from transformational leadership, the presence of academic education, intrinsic job satisfaction and high customer contact, and the absence of family responsibilities, are core conditions for the presence of high leadership performance. The first contribution of this study is the direct inference of follower's regulatory focus from the observation of individuals' circumstances. The second contribution is that leaders should consider followers' circumstances to adopt a su…
Critiquing and Joining Intersections of Disaster, Conflict, and Peace Research
2020
AbstractDisaster research, conflict research, and peace research have rich and deep histories, yet they do not always fully intersect or learn from each other, even when they investigate if and how disasters lead to conflict or peace. Scholarship has tended to focus on investigating causal linkages between disaster (including those associated with climate change) and conflict, and disaster diplomacy emerged as a thread of explanatory research that investigates how and why disaster-related activities do and do not influence peace and conflict. However, definitive conclusions on the disaster-conflict-peace nexus have evaded scientific consensus, in part due to conceptual, methodological, and …
Terrorism, homeland safety and event management
2014
As the last attacks on Boston showed terrorism is based not only on speculation but also on surprise. Terrorists do not want to destroy or to kill everybody, their goal is aimed to inflict and administrate fear to the witnesses. The fact is that tourism and mega-events represented a fertile source to perpetrate terrorist attacks, not only for the casualties but also by the psychological effects on citizenry. This paper explores the nature of terrorism in the context of leisure as well as proposing a valid model to understand the connection among tourism, event management and terrorism.

Privacy protection in a mobile biomedical information collection service
2006
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2006 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad This report presents a model in a mobile health care environment and uses a combination of existing technologies to build a privacy protection scheme. This work covers security issues in both the wireless and wired network, and proposes solutions to these issues. A framework using PKI to distribute digital certificates combined with strong encryption using the AES algorithm is described. Using this framework in combination with a RBAC model using location control we present some principles that will ensure privacy in a mobile wireless biomedical information collection service.
On the Use of XML in Medical Imaging Web-Based Applications
2016
The rapid growth of digital technology in medical fields over recent years has increased the need for applications able to manage patient medical records, imaging data, and chart information. Web-based applications are implemented with the purpose to link digital databases, storage and transmission protocols, management of large volumes of data and security concepts, allowing the possibility to read, analyze, and even diagnose remotely from the medical center where the information was acquired. The objective of this paper is to analyze the use of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) language in web-based applications that aid in diagnosis or treatment of patients, considering how this proto…
Subjectively evaluated effects of domestic violence on well-being in clinical populations
2013
Effects of domestic violence are reflected in victims' physical, psychological, and sexual health as well as in victims' subjective evaluations of health or subjective well-being. The principal aim of this study was to study the extent to which the consequences of domestic violence are reflected in patients' subjectively evaluated well-being, life management, and sense of security in an emergency department, a maternity department, and a reception unit of a psychiatric hospital. A questionnaire on the effects of domestic violence was administered to 530 patients. 61 patients reported either current or previous domestic violence that affected their current well-being and life management.
