Type V collagen-induced upregulation of capn2 (large subunit of m-calpain) gene expression and DNA fragmentation in 8701-BC breast cancer cells

2011

Abstract Type V collagen is known to be over-deposited in the stroma of ductal infiltrating carcinomas of the breast. When used as a substrate, type V collagen restrains growth and invasion, and affects gene expression of 8701-BC ductal infiltrating carcinomas cells. Here we supplement existing data by demonstrating type V collagen dependent upregulation of capn2 gene expression in 8701-BC cells through differential display-PCR and Western blot assays. Furthermore, we suggest that our data obtained by centrifugal sedimentation and electrophoresis strongly suggest a correlation between calpain overproduction and DNA fragmentation, since the incubation with calpain inhibitor partly reverts th…

IMPIEGO DEL RADIONUCLIDE 137CS PER LA STIMA DEI PROCESSI EROSIVI IN UN BACINO FORESTATO

2008

EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF RELATION BETWEEN COHERENT TURBULENT STRUCTURES AND BED-FORMS FORMATION

2008

The present paper describes an experimental investigation on the interactions between flow turbulence and sediment motion. During the experiments, detailed measures of flow velocity components have been carried out using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). The occurrence of turbulent events (inward interaction, ejection, sweep and burst) has been verified through the conditioned quadrant analysis. The quantitative information about the spatial and temporal evolution of turbulent events has been obtained through the space-time correlations of the conditioned data. As the primary objective was to analyse how turbulent structures influence the bed-forms formation, the spatial scale of turbu…

Influence of HCl pretreatment and organo-mineral complexes on laser diffraction measurement of loess–paleosol-sequences

2016

Abstract The influence of different sample pretreatment methods on grain size distributions in particle size analysis has been subject to controversial discussions. Standard sample preparation typically comprises the disaggregation of aggregated and agglomerated particles into single primary particles, i.e., the organic binding material is oxidized by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the contained carbonates are dissolved by hydrochloric acid (HCl). The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of HCl treatment on grain size analyses of Late Pleistocene and Holocene loess–paleosol-sequences investigated by a Beckman Coulter LS 13320 laser particle analyzer. For this purpose, samples from two…

Accumulation of metals and changes in composition of freshwater lake organic sediments during the Holocene

2020

Abstract The distribution of metals in the strata of sediments deposited in the freshwater environment formed during the Holocene in the territory of Latvia has been studied rather insufficiently. Considering the large volume of accumulated organic matter in sediments, studies on the content of metallic elements in sediments can help to determine the peculiarities of the metal accumulation process in limnic systems and the biogeochemical cycling of metals. Lake Pilvelis, which is located in the eastern part of Latvia (the northern part of Europe), was selected as the main study site. Lake Pilvelis is a small lake of a glacial origin, and >90% of its depression is filled with organic-rich se…

1990

The determination of average molecular weights and the characterization of molecular weight distributions by the ratio of the weight- to number-average molecular weights Mw/Mn from sedimentation equilibrium in the ultracentrifuge are described. The essential measurement of the density profile of the mixed solvent is conducted according to Munk (Macromolecules15, 500 (1982)). Special evaluation of the polymer band in the equilibrium allowed to deduce from the observed concentration profile Mw and Mn of a series of poly(methyl methacrylate) samples and thus to characterize the molecular weight distribution of the samples.

Isotopes Trace Biogeochemistry and Sources of Cu and Zn in an intertidal soil

2013

River floodplain soils are sinks and potential sources for toxic trace metals like Cu and Zn. We hypothesize that stable Cu and Zn isotope ratios reflect both the mobilization and the sources of metals. We determined the soil properties, the concentrations and partitioning of Cu and Zn, and variations in δ65Cu and δ66Zn values in a core obtained from an Aquic Udifluvent developed on a freshwater intertidal mudflat of the River Elbe, Germany. The core was sampled at 2 cm intervals to a depth of 34 cm, which corresponds to approximately 9 yr of sedimentation. Elevated concentrations of Cu (up to 320 μg g−1) and Zn (up to 2080 μg g−1) indicated anthropogenic pollution. At the time of sampling …

Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Sediments from Sicilian Coastal Area (Scoglitti) using Automated Soxhlet, GC-MS, and Principal Component Analysis

2014

A methodology for the PAHs and PCBs congener determination in sediment samples has been revised. We determined the distributions of PAHs and PCBs in the superficial sediments of the Scoglitti (Italy) coastal area to provide data for comparison with other marine systems and to hypothesize the sources. Extraction yield, for PCB, was never less than 60% in most cases, while for PAHs, utilizing perdeuterated surrogate standard (benz[a]anthracene-d12 and anthracene-d10) was never less than 72%. The total concentration of the 16 PAHs investigated, expressed as the sum of concentrations, PAHs, varied from 1–5087 μg/kg of dry matrix, while the PCBs ranged from detection limit to 36 μg/kg of dry mat…
