Cognate xenoliths in Mt. Etna lavas: witnesses of the high-velocity body beneath the volcano

2013

Various xenoliths have been found in lavas of the 1763 (“La Montagnola”), 2001, and 2002–03 eruptions at Mt. Etna whose petrographic evidence and mineral chemistry exclude a mantle origin and clearly point to a cognate nature. Consequently, cognate xenoliths might represent a proxy to infer the nature of the high-velocity body (HVB) imaged beneath the volcano by seismic tomography. Petrography allows us to group the cognate xenoliths as follows: i) gabbros with amphibole and amphibole-bearing mela-gabbros, ii) olivine-bearing leuco-gabbros, iii) leuco-gabbros with amphibole, and iv) Plg-rich leuco gabbros. Geobarometry estimates the crystallization pressure of the cognate xenoliths between …

LA-ICP-MS analyses on coral growth increments reveal heavy winter rain in the Eastern Mediterranean at 9 Ma

2009

Abstract Sediment particles incorporated into coral skeletons reflect variation in composition and amount of suspended material in ambient water during coral growth. They can be used to identify periods of enhanced storm frequency and associated freshwater discharge. Tortonian (Late Miocene) Porites corals from Crete (Aegean Sea, Eastern Mediterranean) show pronounced annual density bands in X-ray photographs. δ18O compositional variability reflects the annual banding equivalent with a ~ 7 °C annual sea surface temperature (SST) cycle over a seven-year period. Fine sediment particles are concentrated in layers with skeletal porosity parallel to growth increments. Variations in the chemical …

Soil CO2 degassing on Mt Etna (Sicily) during the period 1989?1993: discrimination between climatic and volcanic influences

1995

Wide variations were measured in the diffuse CO2 flux through the soils in three selected areas of Mt Etna between August 1989 and March 1993. Degassing of CO2 from the area of Zafferana Etnea-S. Venerina, on the eastern slope of the volcano, has been determined to be more strongly influenced by meteorological parameters than the other areas. The seasonal component found in the data from this area has been excluded using a filtering algorithm based on the best fitting equation calculated from the correlation between CO2 flux values and those of air temperature. The filtered data appear to have variations temporally coincident with those from the other areas, thus suggesting a common and pro…

Clastic injection dynamics during ice front oscillations: A case example from Sólheimajökull (Iceland).

2015

18 pages; International audience; Soft-sediment deformation structures are being increasingly used as a tool for reconstructing palaeoenvironments and porewater pressure conditions in glacial settings. However, the potential of hydrofractures and clastic injections in the reconstruction of ice dynamics remains poorly constrained. This paper presents the results of a detailed study of a clastic injection network outcropping in the Sólheimajökull forefield (South Iceland). Sedimentological descriptions are combined with microscopic to macroscopic analyses of clastic injection geometries, sediment-fills, and cross-cutting relationships. The 250 m long and 20 m high exposure observed along the …

Environmental geology and geochemistry of lake sediments (Holzmaar, Eifwl, Germany)

2008

Quaternary sediments of the lake Holzmaar comprise a well laminated, undisturbed sequence of diatomaceous gyttja, silt, clay laminites and tuff layers. The annually deposited gyttja has been dated by varve chronology yielding a continuous high-resolution time sequence for the Holocene and early Pleistocene. These organic-rich sediments provide an unique paleolimnological record on climatic changes, forest fires, volcanic eruptions, and anthropogenic influences on the sediment composition. Volcanic activity produced thin tephra layers (Laacher See Tephra 11,200±120 radiocarbon yrs BP; Ulmener Maar Tephra 9435±70 radiocarbon yrs BP) in the sedimentary column which possess elevated Ba, Sr, Zr,…

New insights into submarine tailing disposal for a reduced environmental footprint: Lessons learnt from Norwegian fjords

2021

Submarine tailing disposal (STD) in fjords from land-based mines is common practice in Norway and takes place in other regions worldwide. We synthesize the results of a multidisciplinary programme on environmental impacts of STDs in Norwegian fjords, providing new knowledge that can be applied to assess and mitigate impact of tailing disposal globally, both for submarine and deep-sea activities. Detailed geological seafloor mapping provided data on natural sedimentation to monitor depositional processes on the seafloor. Modelling and analytical techniques were used to assess the behaviour of tailing particles and process-chemicals in the environment, providing novel tools for monitoring. To…

Unravelling the bacterial diversity found in the semi-arid Tablas de Daimiel National Park wetland (central Spain)

2010

Our knowledge of microbial diversity in the environment is still limited, and there are many species as yet unidentified in both soil and water. Studies of the microbial diversity of wetland ecosystems have been neglected for years, as is the case of Tablas de Daimiel National Park (TDNP), a Spanish semi-arid wetland system of international importance in terms of waterfowl. We report the bacterial diversity of water column, sediment (upper and lower layers) and biofilm samples from the TDNP system using a 16S rRNA gene library approach. A sequence comparison of the 703 clones obtained revealed a number of bacterial phylogroups unreported to date. Bacterial diversity was high (Shannon values…

Controlling factors of phytoplankton assemblages in wetlands: an experimental approach

2003

The aim of this work is to answer some questions like: what factors control the phytoplankton assemblage? What factor or factors are perturbing the assemblage? What factors are driving or maintaining the stability? Are the different responses to the control factors dependent on the hierarchy level? For that, we tested experimentally the influence of herbivory, planktivory, nutrients and sediment on phytoplankton assemblages and its stability from a hypertrophic wetland (Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park, Spain) in three microcosm experiments. The study of the steady state phytoplankton assemblages in this perturbed system could point out some underlying processes instead of competition. T…
