Contaminated sediments from dredging activities as modern turbidites: geochemical signatures in box-core sediments from the Augusta area, Ionian Sea,…

2009

The Augusta area (SE Sicily) is one of the most industrialized and contaminated coastal environments in the Mediterranean region, having a relatively high influx of unregulated industrial effluents. Valuable sets of geochemical data (major elements and trace metals), obtained from box-core sediments collected along a transect from the Sicilian coastal zone seawards of Augusta and dated via 210Pb and 137Cs, indicated increased metal contamination (notably Hg) since ca 1940-1950, related to the industrial development of the area. Metal enrichment is considerable in the coastal sediments, being significantly in excess (for Hg and Pb) of background values estimated for the Strait of Sicily. Mor…

2008

A10.18 Lack of Association of Serum Interleukin-17 and Interleukin-23 Levels with Disease Activity in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis in Latvia

2013

Background Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a clinically well-known chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton and peripheral joints. The pathogenesis of this disease still remains a challenge. Determination of cytokine profile and its role involved in AS pathogenesis give an opportunity to extend the targeted therapeutic approach. Interleukin-17 (IL-17) and interleukin-23 (IL-23) are cytokines of interest in the investigation of the pathogenesis of spondyloarthritides although their importance in AS is not clearly defined. Objectives to investigate levels of IL-17 and IL-23 in a group of AS and in a demographically matched group of healthy subjects and its association with the diseas…

Haemoconcentration by gelatin-induced acceleration of erythrocyte sedimentation rate

2000

Erythrocyte sedimentation rates from 40 suspensions of packed red blood cells in modified fluid gelatin, 4% albumin solution, 6% hydroxyethyl starch and normal saline were measured at room temperature using Westergren's method. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was extremely high in gelatin and this increase was significant after 10-60 min when compared with the other fluids. Erythrocyte sedimentation rates in albumin, hydroxyethyl starch and normal saline were low and there were no differences between these fluids [erythrocyte sedimentation after 60 min, median (interquartile range): gelatin 128 (111.2-130.0) mm, albumin 2 (1.5-2.0) mm, hydroxyethyl starch 1.5 (1.0-1.6) mm, normal saline …

Differential serum acute-phase biomarker profile in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

2016

There is a growing interest in inflammation and immune dysfunction in severe psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This dysfunction seems to consist in abnormal blood levels of cytokines and acute-phase proteins, with increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, homocysteine and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Higher levels can be found in acute episodes and in patients with a higher cardiovascular risk.Acute-phase protein serum parameters were determined in a sample of 100 outpatients with schizophrenia (n = 50) or bipolar disorder (n = 50) so as to assess differences in pro-inflammatory state. Metabolic state was assessed through BMI, waist c…

FRI0504 Prognostic Factors of Adult Onset Still's Disease: Analysis of 100 Cases in 3 Tertiary Referral Centers

2016

Background Adult onset Still9s disease (AOSD) is rare inflammatory disease [1]. Three different patterns of AOSD have been identified: i. monocyclic pattern, characterized by a systemic single episode; ii. polycyclic pattern, associated with multiple flares, separated by remissions; iii. chronic pattern, related to a persistently active disease with associated polyarthritis [2]. Until now, the treatment of AOSD remains largely empirical, lacking controlled clinical trials [1]. Objectives We aimed to investigate clinical data of AOSD patients and any possible correlation among these features and the outcome of patients. Methods Clinical data of 100 AOSD patients were recorded. All patients f…

Towards the Point of Care and Noninvasive Classification of Bladder Cancer from Urine Sediment Infrared Spectroscopy. Spectral differentiation of nor…

2021

Abstract Bladder cancer (BC) is the 9th cancer cause of death and one of most cost-intensive in the world. The diagnostic tools are still not at all satisfactory. Herein we evaluated the potential of infrared spectroscopy to detect molecular changes that precede and accompany the carcinogenesis in voided urine sediment. We collected 165 samples from patients being diagnosed for BC and measured them with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (ATR FTIR). Samples were primarily divided into three groups according to cytology that indicated the presence of normal, abnormal and cancer cells. ATR FTIR spectra of sediments were analyzed with the use of partial leas…

Developmental changes and acetylcholinesterase activity in the metamorphosing brain ofTenebrio molitor: Correlation to ecdysteroid titers

1994

The brain of Tenebrio molitor exhibited marked fluctuations in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity throughout metamorphosis. This was true AChE activity, since it was inhibited by high substrate concentrations and by 10 μM of the specific AChE inhibitor BW284C51 [(1,5-bis'4-allyldimethylammoniumphenyl)-pentan-3-one dibromide] but not by iso-OMPA (tetraisopropylpyrophosphoramide), a cholinesterase (but not AChE) inhibitor. The histochemical AChE activity was localized in the neuropile and the nuclear envelope of neurons and glial cells. The enzyme extracted from brains with 1% Triton X-100 and 1 M NaCl sedimented as a single peak in a sucrose density gradient, with a sedimentation coefficie…
