Geochemical and Petrographic Characterization of Marine-Continental Transitional Facies Shale (Qilian Basin, China): Origin of Organic Matter Input, …

2021

This study, for the first time, investigates the source, keroger pattern, evolution degree, sedimentary environment, and evaluates the hydrocarbon generating ability of marine-continental transitional facies shale from the Ebao area of the Qilian Basin in western China. The organic-rich shales of the marine-continental transitional facies were subjected to total organic carbon (TOC), rock pyrolysis, the biomarkers and kerogen microscopy analyses. The kerogen microscopy analyses indicated that the sample from ZK001 well and ZK2002 well had a mass of vitrinite and small number of exinite, so kerogen type was mainly humic. According to vitrinite reflectance, the organic matter was in the stage…

Burial and thermal evolution of the Sicilian fold-and-thrust belt: preliminary results from the Scillato wedge top basin (central-northern Sicily, It…

2016

Wedge top basins are key elements for unravelling the tectonic evolution of fold-and-thrust belts. In detail, their thermal signature and sedimentary fill records modes and time of exhumation of their edges. The Scillato basin is a wedge-top basin located in the central-northern sector of the Sicilian fold-and-thrust belt (western sector of the Madonie Mts). Upper Serravallian-upper Tortonian succession composed by up to 1,200 m thick delta-river to open marine siliciclastic sediments, fills the basin. This succession lies on a deformed substrate made up of thrust sheets composed of Numidian Flysch, Sicilidi and Imerese units stacked with a SW tectonic transport. The basin fill records a po…

Reply to comment by C. Morhange, C. Flaux, P.A. Pirazzoli, M.B. Carre on “Holocene Sea level Change in Malta”

2013

The pits of Birzebbugia are located near the present-day mean sea level, and some are partially submerged. They were dated using pottery discovered in an archaeological site close to the coast, dated to the Bronze Age (Zammit, 1928; Abela, 1999). As they have been interpreted as sites for the retting of flax, during their utilization they should have remained dry and the sea could not submerge them. This is the reason why these structures are not directly related to the sea level, as suggested by Biolchi et al. (2011), so they represent an upper limit.

Dating of a sediment core in the Palermo Bay (Sicily, Italy)

2007

An extensive study of sediment cores in the Palermo Bay has been carried during the last two years. Main goal of the research was to study the environmental pollution of the area, using foraminifers as an environmental indicator.

Relationships between suspended and sediment organic matter in a semi- enclosed marine system: The Stagnone di Marsala sound (Western Sicily)

1997

To gather information on the interactions between the sediment and suspended organic matter pools in the Stagnone di Marsala, water and sediment samples were collected, on a monthly basis, at 11 stations. Water temperature and salinity showed a clear seasonality whilst particulate and sediment organic matter did not show any clear seasonal pattern. Relative abundances of suspended and sediment organic matter, on the other hand, appeared to be site-dependent and controlled mainly by the dynamic balance between resuspension and sedimentation. High quantities of both suspended and sediment total organic matter were present, while very low algal biomasses (in terms of chlorophyll-a concentratio…

A regional approach for exploring the relation between sediment transport and coastal erosion in Sicily

2022

To study on a regional basis, the relation between fluvial sediment delivery and coastal erosion, the historical record of coastline migration of Sicily was analyzed with respect to the estimated sediment delivery to the coast obtained from the spatially distributed sediment delivery WaTEM/SEDEM model. The latter was directly acquired from the ESDAC database as a 25 m pixel layers, being based on the combination between the RUSLE model and a transport capacity routing algorithm. At the same time, the coastline-evolution (accretion/retreatment) data for 1960/1994 and 1994/2012 intervals were processed. This dataset, provided by ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Resear…

Testing the Modified Sediment Delivery Model (MOSEDD) at SPA2 Experimental Basin, Sicily (Italy)

2017

A new version of a spatially distributed sediment delivery model taking into account the hillslope sediment transport efficiency, named MOSEDD, is presented. This model gives estimates of basin sediment yield at event scale, which are more reliable than those obtained by the original SEDD. For SPA2 basin discretized into morphological units, four different calculation schemes of MOSEDD, including the original SEDD version, were applied. All parameterization schemes of the model were calibrated using 15 events measured at the outlet of the experimental basin in the period February 2005–February 2010. The model calibration was used to determine a relationship between the coefficient βₑ of the…
