Influence of citrates nanoparticles on morphological traits of bacterial cells pseudomonas syringae pv. atrofaciens

2020

Electron microscope investigations have revealed disintegration of the cell wall of Pseudomonas syringae pv. atrofaciens and subsequent killing of bacterial cells after application of 1% solutions of the citrates of Ag-Cu nanoparticles, the complex Co-Cu-Zn-Fe-Mn-Mo-Mg (Avatar-1) and iodine-selenium. In field conditions, it was revealed that pre-sowing treatment of wheat seeds with the aforementioned 1% solutions significantly inhibited the development of basal glume rot in cereals with artificial infection of Pseudomonas syringae рv. аtrofaciens. Consequently, reduction of the typical symptoms of basal glume rot of cereals and the percentage of isolated cells of Pseudomonas syringae рv. аt…

Identification of phytopathogenic bacteria in maize seeds in Ukraine

2018

The main bacterial diseases of maize: bacterial wilt of maize (Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii), goss’s bacterial wilt (Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis), seed rot-seedling blight of maize (Bacillus subtilis), bacterial spot of maize (Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae), bacterial leaf spot of maize (Pantoea agglomerans) and bacterial stalk rot of maize caused by several causative agents, were described. The causative agents of these diseases are often stored and transmitted with seeds, so seed analysis for the presence of phytopathogenic bacteria is an important step in the pathogen control system. For analysis, the corn seeds that were grown in the Poltava and Kiev regions …

Berseem-annual ryegrass intercropping: effect of plant arrangement and seeding ratio on N2 fixation and yield

2005

Various agronomic factors can affect the productivity and the efficiency of legume-grass intercropping systems. This research was carried out in a Mediterranean semi-arid environment (37°30’N; 13°31’E; 178 m a.s.l.) with the aim to study on berseem clover- annual ryegrass mixture (Trifolium alexandrinum L. – Lolium multiflorum Lam subsp. wersterwoldicum) the effects of different plant arrangement (sowing of the two components in alternate rows or in the same row) and seeding ratios (100:0; 75:25; 50:50; 25:75; 0:100) on forage yield, nitrogen content and nitrogen fixation. The experimental design was a split-plot with four replications. The 15N isotope dilution technique was used to estimat…

Efficacy of microbial consortia and natural compounds as seed treatment for tomato pathogen management

2022

In this study the efficacy of experimental treatments based on microbial consortia (MC) (beneficial rhizobacteria and fungi, actinomycetes, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) and natural compounds (NCs) (chitosan and glucosinolates) as seed treatments for tomato bacterial and fungal pathogens management (Xanthomonas euvesicatoria pv. perforans, Xep; Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, Psto; Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici, FORL) was evaluated. Independent trials were performed by using organic tomato seeds ‘San Marzano nano’. Treatments were performed by soaking seeds either in aqueous MC suspensions or NC dilutions. The direct effect on the seed inoculum was performed on seeds inocul…

Phytotoxic effects of commercial essential oils on selected vegetable crops: Cucumber and tomato

2020

Abstract Essential oils of Origanum vulgare L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Thymus mastichina L., Ocimum basilicum L., Melaleuca alternifolia Maiden & Betche ex Cheel, Eucalyptus globulus Labill., Gaultheria procumbens L. and Origanum majorana L., with herbicidal effects at different doses (0.125, 0.250, 0.50 and 1 μL/mL) were tested against Cucumis sativus L. and Solanum lycopersicum L., in order to ensure their harmlessness against these Mediterranean food crops. Oregano (carvacrol 60.42%) was the most damaging essential oil, exhibiting a dose-dependent phytotoxic activity against the seed germination and seedling growth of cucumber and tomato, whereas rosemary (1,8-cineole 24.95%, camphor…

Bird assemblages in isolated Ficus trees in Kenyan farmland

2006

Over the last few decades a rapid and extensive conversion of tropical forests to agricultural land has taken place resulting in mosaics of fragmented forest patches, pastures and farmland. While the effects of forest fragmentation on biodiversity have been intensively studied within the remaining forests, relatively little is known about the biodiversity in tropical farmland (Daily et al. 2001, Pimentel et al. 1992). Frugivorous birds are an important group of species in tropical farmland ecosystems. Frugivorous birds are significant seed dispersers and can play a prominent role in transporting seeds into disturbed areas and setting the stage for the regeneration of these systems. Isolated…

Phytotoxic effects of Lantana camara, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eriocephalus africanus essential oils in weeds of Mediterranean summer crops

2009

Abstract The essential oil composition of Lantana camara , Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eriocephalus africanus was analyzed by means of GC and GC–MS and bioassayed in order to determine their activity against Amaranthus hybridus and Portulaca oleracea . E. camaldulensis essential oil, with spathulenol as the main compound, was the most effective, completely inhibiting germination and seedling growth on both weeds. The essential oil of E. africanus , rich in artemisia ketone, showed activity similar to that of E. camaldulensis on A. hybridus , but it was not so effective against P. oleracea , and L. camara essential oil, with high percentages in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, also showed higher…

Powdery mildew resistance genes in Latvian barley varieties

2004

Thirty-three Latvian spring barley varieties and breeding lines and 90individual progenies from these were tested at the seedling stage for their reaction to a maximum 37 isolates of Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei. Eighteen varieties were composed of two or three lines with different resistance. TwelveMl powdery mildew resistance genes(a1, a6, a7, a8, a9, a12, a13, at, g, k1, (Kr) and La) and four Ml genes closely linked to the Mla locus [a(Al2), a(No3), a(Em2) and a(Ru3)] were found. Mla8, Mlg and Mlk1 were the most frequent genes that occurred among the tested genotypes. The results confirm the pedigrees of all genotypes apart from cv. Agra and the breeding line L-215.

Morphogenic responsein vitroof epicotyl segments ofCitrus macrophylla

2008

Abstract The influence of explant orientation, contact of the cut surface with the medium, type of growth regulators and distance of epicotyl cuttings from the cotyledonary node (the part of the seedling where the cotyledons are attached) on in vitro morphogenesis of Citrus macrophylla (alemow) was evaluated. Maximum number of shoots was induced from epicotyl segments placed horizontally.

Pre-release risk assessment of the egg-parasitoid Gryon pennsylvanicum for classical biological control of Leptoglossus occidentalis.

2013

Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann (Heteroptera: Coreidae) is a North American conifer seed pest that was accidentally introduced to Europe. In the Mediterranean area, it threatens the production of Pinus pinea Linna- eus seeds. The egg-parasitoid Gryon pennsylvanicum (Ashmead) (Hymenop- tera: Platygastridae), the main natural enemy in the native range of L. occidentalis, was imported from British Columbia to Italy. Pre-release risk assessments were made under quarantine conditions by no-choice tests conducted with na€ıve and experienced G. pennsylvanicum offering single eggs of target and non-target species for varying exposure times (1, 4, 48 h). G. pennsylvanicum successfully parasitize…
