Absence of Sex Differential Plasticity to Light Availability during Seed Maturation in Geranium sylvaticum

2015

Sex-differential plasticity (SDP) hypothesis suggests that since hermaphrodites gain fitness through both pollen and seed production they may have evolved a higher degree of plasticity in their reproductive strategy compared to females which achieve fitness only through seed production. SDP may explain the difference in seed production observed between sexes in gynodioecious species in response to resource (nutrients or water) availability. In harsh environments, hermaphrodites decrease seed production whereas females keep it relatively similar regardless of the environmental conditions. Light availability can be also a limiting resource and thus could theoretically affect differently femal…

Dynamic laser speckle analyzed considering inhomogeneities in the biological sample

2017

Dynamic laser speckle phenomenon allows a contactless and nondestructive way to monitor biological changes that are quantified by second-order statistics applied in the images in time using a secondary matrix known as time history of the speckle pattern (THSP). To avoid being time consuming, the traditional way to build the THSP restricts the data to a line or column. Our hypothesis is that the spatial restriction of the information could compromise the results, particularly when undesirable and unexpected optical inhomogeneities occur, such as in cell culture media. It tested a spatial random approach to collect the points to form a THSP. Cells in a culture medium and in drying paint, repr…

Phosphonates as Unique Components of Plant Seeds—A Promising Approach to Use Phosphorus Profiles in Plant Chemotaxonomy

2021

Phosphorus is one of the most important elements essential for all living beings. Plants accumulate and store phosphorous in various forms that have diverse physiological and biochemical functions. In this study, we determine and then examine the phosphorus profiles of seeds of plants belonging to different taxa based on extractable inorganic phosphates and organic forms of phosphorus. We paid particular attention to the presence of natural phosphonates in the tested materials. The inorganic phosphates were determined colorimetrically, whereas phosphorus profiles were created by using 31P NMR spectroscopy. Our study on phosphorus profiles revealed that the obtainedsets of data vary signific…

Identification of the phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase isoform EDA9 as the essential gene for embryo and male gametophyte development in Arabidopsis

2013

[EN] Three different pathways of serine (Ser) biosynthesis have been described in plants: the Glycolate pathway, which is part of the Photorespiratory pathway, and 2 non-Photorespiratory pathways, the Glycerate and the Phosphorylated pathways. The Phosphorylated Pathway of Ser Biosynthesis (PPSB) has been known to exist since the 1950s, but its biological relevance was not revealed until quite recently when the last enzyme of the pathway, the Phosphoserine Phosphatase, was functionally characterized. In the associated study1, we characterized a family of genes coding for putatite phosphoglycerate dehydrogenases (PGDH, 3-PGDH, and EDA9), the first enzyme of the PPSB. A metabolomics study usi…

Application of hull, bur and leaf chestnut extracts on the shelf-life of beef patties stored under MAP: Evaluation of their impact on physicochemical…

2018

The impact of chestnut extracts (Castanea sativa) from leaf, bur and hull at different concentrations on the shelf-life of beef patties during 18 days of refrigerated storage at (2 ± 1 °C) was studied and compared to control and synthetic antioxidant (BHT) samples. Total phenolics and in vitro antioxidant capacity of extracts were evaluated by using DPPH, FRAP, reducing power and oil accelerated oxidation test (peroxide value, conjugated dienes, p-anisidine and fatty acid profile). The microbial spoilage, colour parameters, lipid oxidation and sensorial properties were used to assess antioxidant activity in beef patties. The highest total phenolic content was found in bur extracts (43.68 ± …

Inferring postimplant dose distribution of salvage permanent prostate implant (PPI) after primary PPI on CT images

2018

International audience; PURPOSE:To evaluate the dose distribution of additional radioactive seeds implanted during salvage permanent prostate implant (sPPI) after a primary permanent prostate implant (pPPI).METHODS AND MATERIALS:Patients with localized prostate cancer were primarily implanted with iodine-125 seeds and had a dosimetric assessment based on day 30 postimplant CT (CT1). After an average of 6 years, these patients underwent sPPI followed by the same CT-based evaluation of dosimetry (CT2). Radioactive seeds on each CT were detected. The detected primary seeds on CT1 and CT2 were registered and then removed from CT2 referred as a modified CT2 (mCT2). Dosimetry evaluations (D90 and…

Grape seed and skin extract reduces pancreas lipotoxicity, oxidative stress and inflammation in high fat diet fed rats.

2016

IF 2.326; International audience; Obesity is related to an elevated risk of diabetes and the mechanisms whereby fat adversely affects the pancreas are poorly understood. We studied the effect of a high fat diet (HFD) on pancreas steatosis, oxidative stress and inflammation as well as the putative protection afforded by grape seed and skin extract (GSSE). HFD induced body weight gain, without affecting insulinemia, nor glycemia and dropped adiponectemia. HFD also provoked the ectopic deposition of cholesterol and triglyceride, and an oxidative stress characterized by increased lipoperoxidation and carbonylation, inhibition of antioxidant enzyme activities such as CAT, GPx and SOD, depletion …

'Just a pinch of salt'. An experimental comparison of the effect of repeated exposure and flavor-flavor learning with salt or spice on vegetable acce…

2014

N°CNRS : UMR6265 Centre des Sciences du Goût et de l'Alimentation; Children's vegetable intake is below the recommended amounts. No studies to date have tested the relevance of using salt or spices to increase children's vegetable acceptance. Our objective was to compare the effect of repeated exposure (RE) and of flavor-flavor learning (FFL) on toddlers' acceptance of a nonfamiliar vegetable. Two unconditioned stimuli were used: salt and a salt-associated spice. Toddlers attending six nurseries were assigned to 3 groups in a between subject design. Groups were exposed 8 times to a basic salsify puree (0.2% salt w/w; RE group; n = 47), a salty salsify puree (0.5% salt w/w; FFL-Salt group; n…

Inhibition of Trypanosoma cruzi by plant extracts used in Chinese medicine.

2004

In this work, we assessed the effect of extracts obtained from 17 plants used in traditional Chinese medicine. These extracts were tested in vitro with the epimastigote form of Trypanosoma cruzi, clone Bra C(15) C(2), at 27 degrees C in F-29 medium at a concentration of 100 microg/ml in axenic cultures. Allopurinol was used as reference drug. Seven plant extracts showed inhibitory activities lower than 25%. Pueraria lobata, Mahonia beaei, Dictamus dasycarpus, Kochia scoparia, Sophora flavescens and Ligustrum lucidum showed effects with inhibition values between 25% and 60%, whereas Lithospermum erythrorhizon, Saussurea lappa, Melia toosendan and Cinnamomum cassia showed the greatest inhibit…
