Error and Uncertainty Analysis of Non-Uniform Residual Stress Evaluation by Using the Ring-Core Method

Like other mechanical methods used for the residual stress evaluation on a generic structural component, the Ring-Core Method (RCM) is potentially subjected to various error sources that in some particular experimental conditions can lead to significant errors and/or uncertainties on the computed residual stresses. The accuracy of the residual stresses computed by the RCM can be improved by a proper error analysis that allows the user to correct the systematic errors, as well as to evaluate the remaining stress uncertainty due to the random errors. This paper is focused on the virtual reconstruction of a portion of the naos of Temple G of Selinunte, as a case study for the definition of a method of virtual anastylosis and reconstruction of collapsed colonnades in archaeological contexts. Reconstruction is based on the combination of historical research, archaeological analysis, digital surveying, image-based modeling and laser scanning methods. The complexity of the ruins of the temple suggested a thorough archaeological analysis of the fragments of the inner colonnade of the naos. Yacht performance monitoring in real sailing conditions

Abstract In this paper a multi-method approach is used to setup and validate a monitoring system applied to a small sailing boat during real sailing conditions. This monitoring system is able to transform the data coming from some typical devices installed on board into information about the deformed state of the boat. GPS, Wind Data Logger and cameras have been installed on the boat to measure its route and speed, the apparent wind velocity and direction and the positions of the crew members. The project of the third competition (1886-1887), drawn up by Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857-1932), reveals a great maturity design that transforms the complex functional program into a rigorous neo-Renaissance style building. A remarkable and diverse series of ceiling structures emerged between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in several European cities, aiming to offer a theatrical approach to architectural space. This development unfolded amidst the widespread use of frescoed ceilings or hemispherical domes supported by drums and pendentives inspired by Roman models. The paper presents the results of a numerical and experimental investigation performed on a barrel of a speargun equipped with two kinds of muzzle. In particular, a standard muzzle for speargun (having an elastic propulsion) has been compared with an innovative one called ‘roller’. This new muzzle is equipped with two rollers and special bands. The rubber bands, fixed at the lower side of the barrel, run through the rollers and are engaged in suitable seats of the shaft. These bands are, therefore, longer than the traditional ones and, consequently, with equal force applied by the diver, the roller speargun has a longer range.
