The phenomenology of proximity violence: relational strategies and modalities used against vulnerable migrants

2019

The chapter describes an umbrella concept, proximity violence, of which violence against women is only one manifestation. Of this phenomenon , the author endeavoured to highlight the patterns that make defining its material contours and specifying the tesserae that compose it difficult. In fact cultural factors, contingent situations became entangled with concrete elements of pain and abuse of the victims. It was, therefore, a matter of betting, on the possibility of representing a phenomenon by devising a bridge between theories of gender-based violence and the “thing” – the violence of those who are not strangers and in whom, for different reasons, we trust. Filling this vacuum employing …

Residential segregation of foreigners: an analysis of the Italian city of Palermo

2015

Ethnic residential segregation in Italy is an emerging key question, which will be crucial in the definition and implementation of both urbanistic and social policies. This paper focuses on this phenomenon in the Italian city of Palermo. We use individual data for all the population residing in the city at 31 December 2011, organized by ethnicity and district. Firstly, we describe the spatial distribution and the residential segregation of foreigners in the city, applying many different segregation measures. Among the others, we also apply the Duncan and Duncan dissimilarity index. Finally, we apply a recent methodological approach, which allows reducing the bias of the Duncan’s index…

Lake size and fish diversity determine resource use and trophic position of a top predator in high-latitude lakes

2015

Prey preference of top predators and energy flow across habitat boundaries are of fundamental importance for structure and function of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as they may have strong effects on production, species diversity, and food-web stability. In lakes, littoral and pelagic food-web compartments are typically coupled and controlled by generalist fish top predators. However, the extent and determinants of such coupling remains a topical area of ecological research and is largely unknown in oligotrophic high-latitude lakes. We analyzed food-web structure and resource use by a generalist top predator, the Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus (L.), in 17 oligotrophic subarctic lakes…

Perceived teaching efficacy and coeducational vs. single-sex grouping in physical education teachers

2021

In many countries, sex equality is an essential aim of physical education (PE) curricula, while the PE grouping practices are widely hetero-normative. As far as there is a discrepancy between the curricula and practice, equality will not fully take place. This study examined the associations between PE teachers’ perceived teaching efficacy (student engagement, instruction, class management) and preferences for single-sex (i.e. juridical sex) vs. coeducational grouping in PE. The analysis, based on a cross-sectional online survey of 175 Finnish PE teachers, showed that higher perceived class management was associated with the stronger preferences for single-sex PE. Associations of teacher’s …

Heterogeneity versus Homogeneity in Schools: A Review of the Educational Value of Classroom Interaction

2020

The degree of homogeneity and heterogeneity among schools affects the comprehensiveness and inclusiveness of the school system and the type and scope of classroom interaction. Since the beginning of the 1980s, interest has gradually increased in the effects of homogeneity and heterogeneity of schools on classroom interactions

Gender segregation in the employment of higher education graduates

2014

This article examines the employment and placement in the working life of Finnish higher education graduates (i.e. graduates from universities and polytechnics), focusing on gender equality. It reports a study on gender segregation in higher education and working life, considered in relation to Nordic gender equality policies. The data were gathered via a questionnaire administered to graduates in business and administration (n = 1067) and in technology (n = 1087), three years after their graduation. The results showed that men were able to secure permanent and full-time employment more often than women, and men achieved better correspondence between their degree and their employment. Howev…

Urban Segregation and Unemployment: A Case Study of Marseille (France)

2015

International audience; In this paper, we study the effects the Marseille’s spatial organization on unemployment. More specifically, differences in characteristics of residential population induce urban stratification so that the urban structure could affect the propensity of unemployment. This potential link is called the reverse causality. In order to evaluate the effect s of spatial structure on unemployment, we implement a spatial probit model to reveal the employment probabilities of young adults still living with their parents. In a first step, we highlight the realness of residential segregation in Marseille by a topology of neighborhoods by degree of deprivation with a principal com…

Korkeakoulutuksen eriytyvät työelämätulokset

2018
