3D nanoscale ordered architectures in thin films for organic electronics
2011
Order in molecular thin films is of fundamental importance to gain and exploit a series of properties in nanotechnology. In this contest, engineering 2D supramolecular and molecular superstructures is of particular interest. They offer great possibilities for several applications whose achievement also allows for new theoretical approaches and nanoscale laws [1]. A natural extension of 2D nanopatterning concerns the attainment of a 3D nanoscale control in molecular films [2]. This question is complex to challenge and it is of ultimate importance in emerging fields like organic and hybrid photovoltaics, organic thin film transistors and sensors as well as plastic electronics. For example, th…
Nanodevices by DNA based gold nanostructures
2017
In this thesis DNA based structures were utilized to create gold nanostructures for nanosensing and nanoelectronic applications. In the past, both of these fields have been dominated by the conventional lithography methods, e.g., electron beam lithography and UV-lithography, but more recently scaling down the components by these techniques has become increasingly more complex and costly. Especially in the micro- and nanoelectronics, the increase in the component density and thus computational power would require fabrication of sub-10-nm components, which is challenging for the top-down approaches. Aforementioned developments have led researchers to seek alternative methods to fabricate these…
Gelation and gel properties of two- and three-component pyrene based low molecular weight organogelators
2011
The research described in this thesis covers the synthesis, characterization and the study of the gelation ability of fteen pyrene based low molecular weight organogelators (LMOGs). The gelation and gel properties were investigated by rheometry, scanning electron microscopy, di erential scanning calorimetry, UV-Vis and uorescence spectroscopy. The pyrene based LMOGs form complexes with 2,4,7-trinitro uorenone (TNF) and self-assemble non-covalently through - stacking, donor-acceptor and van der Waals interactions to form thermoreversible gels, which remain stable at least for two years. The strongest gels were obtained in primary alcohols whereas the poor solubility of TNF restricted gelatio…
Multivalent N-donor ligands for the construction of coordination polymers and coordination polymer gels
2018
This work describes the synthesis and characterisation of several multivalent N-donor ligands and their coordination compounds and the use of these ligands in the construction of coordination polymers and coordination polymer gels. The project can be divided into two parts. The first part of the research is focused on the coordination chemistry of ring-substituted biimidazoles in acidic media. The dependence of the formation of ion pairs and zwitterionic, especially zinc and copper containing coordination compounds on the pH of the reaction medium and ring-substituents of the ligand were examined. The second part of the study deals with the preparation of Ag, Zn and Cu coordination polymers…
Nanoscale probing of the supramolecular assembly in a two‐component gel by near‐field infrared spectroscopy
2023
The design of soft biomaterials requires a deep understanding of molecular self-assembly. We introduce here a nanoscale infrared (IR) spectroscopy study of a two-component supramolecular gel to assess the system´s heterogeneity and supramolecular assembly. In contrast to far-field IR spectroscopy, near-field IR spectroscopy revealed differences in the secondary structures of the gelator molecules and non-covalent interactions at three distinct nano-locations of the gel network. A β-sheet arrangement is dominant in single and parallel fibres with a small proportion of an α-helix present, while the molecular assembly derives from strong hydrogen bonding. However, at the crossing point of two …
Rod–coil copolymers from oligo(p-benzamide) foldamers
2007
Self assembling rod–coil copolymers were synthesized in which oligo(p-benzamide) rods up to the octamer were prepared via iterative solution synthesis employing the acid labile 2,4-dimethoxybenzyl amide protective group.

Design and construction of halogen-bonded capsules and cages
2017
This thesis describes the design, synthesis and characterization of supramolecular halogen-bonded capsules and cages from multivalent ligands. In the first part of the thesis, an overview to halogen bonding is provided. After discussing the general features of the halogen bonding, the most frequently used halogen bond donors are introduced and examples of their utilization in halogen-bonded systems are discussed. The chapter also presents recent advances made in the field of halogen-bonded supramolecular capsules. The first part of the thesis also includes a review of halogen-bonded complexes involving halonium ions, and a brief introduction to [N···X+···N] halogen bonds is provided along w…
Expansion and Compression of a Helicate with Central Diol-Units as Stereocontrolling Moieties
2022
The dicatechol ester ligand 2-H4 forms the compressed helicate Li4[(2)3Ti2] which upon removal of the internally bound lithium cations expands. In the compressed form, the chiral diol units control the stereochemistry of the complex which is lost upon expansion of the system. peerReviewed
Self-assembly of 2,8,14,20-tetraisobutyl-5,11,17,23-tetrahydroxyresorc[4]arene
1999
We report herein the observation of a hexameric structure of a hydroxyresorc[4]arene in the solid state, enclosing a large interior space. This artificial molecular container is stabilized only by hydrogen bonds. The tendency to form aggregates in solution is demonstrated mainly by means of ESI-MS methods.
