Le faggete siciliane sono di rilevante interesse fitogeografico ed ecologico perché vegetano al limite meridionale dell’intero areale di distribuzione europeo della specie. Il faggio in Sicilia caratterizza nettamente il paesaggio montano dell’Isola, raggiungendo il limite superiore della vegetazione arborea. L’areale siciliano ricopre una superficie di circa 16.000 ha, legato alle principali vette e alle alte pendici dei Monti Madonie, Monti Nebrodi ed Etna. Lampedusa e Linosa sono isole molto diverse fra loro, una calcarea, l’altra vulcanica; quindi è comprensibile che la fauna sia in buona parte differente. Tuttavia la maggioranza delle specie vi sono migrate attivamente o, nel caso di Lampedusa, rappresentano la testimonianza di un antico collegamento con la Tunisia. L’importanza faunistica delle Pelagie è dovuta ai taxa endemici ma anche alla presenza di specie africane al limite geografico della loro distribuzione (Lampedusa, di natura calcarea, si trova infatti sulla piattaforma continentale africana).

In view of an ecological and environmentally use of the biomass drew from forest operations, it is utterly important to well know the forest ecosystems characterizing the regional territory and in particular the pilot area of the Proforbiomed project. In the twentieth-century Italy, as many other densely populated European countries, has been characterized by a progressive reduction of the forest cover, specially in the southern Mediterranean regions. Generally, the mountain areas developed a forest based economy, especially in north east Alps and in the Mediterranean Apennine inner mountains. We have implemented a training program addressed to the forestry experts of the Sicilian Region Rural and Territorial Development Department, to the students of the Forestry and Environmental Sciences at the University of Palermo, to the professionals members of the Forestry and Agronomy Doctors Association, to all those interested and working in the forestry field in Sicily. All these activities aimed at improving the whole system capacity to manage forests in order to apply the sylvicoltural good practices developed by the project. The Sicilian forestal landscape is part of an agro-forestal environment where wood stations, often spatially organized on grazing, alternate to scrublands and cultivated areas. In Roman times, the island’s forest surface amounted to about one million hectares, but the deforestation practices carried out to give room to agriculture, along the centuries, reduced this surface to about a third.
