Effect of Prime and Target Repetition on Lexical Decision Time

1992

On a prime-target lexical decision task we manipulated the relatedness between prime and target (semantically related or unrelated), the number of repetitions (from 1 to 5), the type of the repeated stimulus (only the prime, only the target, or both), and the stimulus onset asynchrony (within a range of automatic activation from 60 to 400 msec.) to find whether semantic and repetition priming are additive (or interact), and whether there is episodic priming in an automatic, nonconscious way. Analysis showed repetition and semantic priming were additive rather than interactive. No episodic automatic priming was found. Results are discussed in terms of the predictions made from the main theo…

Encoding numbers: behavioral evidence for processing-specific representations.

2006

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis of a complex encoding of numbers according to which each numerical processing requires a specific representational format for input. In three experiments, adult participants were given two numbers presented successively on screen through a self-presentation procedure after being asked to add, to subtract, or to compare them. We considered the self-presentation time of the first number as reflecting the complexity of the encoding for a given planned processing. In line with Dehaene's triple-code model, self-presentation times were longer for additions and subtractions than for comparisons with two-digit numbers but longer for subtractions than…

Blending the Erotic and the Divine in Mystical Literature

2004

THE BEGINNINGS OF SYMBOLIC-RELIGIOUS COGNITION - Cognitive Archeology and Cognitive Fluidity: About 30,000 years ago (70,000 years after the fossil records of the anatomically modern human), religious thought and symbolic conceptual activity arose from the capacity of integrating specific-domain a process called "cognitive fluidity" (Mithen 1996). Metaphor, Anthropomorphism and Cognitive Science: Metaphor is a basic mental capacity by which people understand themselves and the world around them through conceptual mappings of knowledge between mental spaces, using everyday knowledge to reason about more abstract concepts. Of all the templates for supernatural concepts, the ones that seriousl…

Predictive and Evolutive Cross-Referencing for Web Textual Sources

2017

International audience; One of the main challenges in the domain of competitive intelligence is to harness important volumes of information from the web, and extract the most valuable pieces of information. As the amount of information available on the web grows rapidly and is very heterogeneous, this process becomes overwhelming for experts. To leverage this challenge, this paper presents a vision for a novel process that performs cross-referencing at web scale. This process uses a focused crawler and a semantic-based classifier to cross-reference textual items without expert intervention, based on Big Data and Semantic Web technologies. The system is described thoroughly, and interests of…

Procedural semantics, metarepresentation, and some particles in Behdini Kurdish

2012

Contemporary studies in the linguistic semantics of particles have been greatly influenced by two ideas: that these items trigger pragmatic processing procedures rather than provide purely conceptual content, and that the procedures that some of them trigger relate to the recovery of metarepresentations. Recent developments in the theory of procedural semantics have introduced some refinements, notably the claim that these procedures may not all relate primarily to comprehension per se but may also relate to the epistemic assessment of communicated claims. This paper discusses three particles in Behdini Kurdish in the light of these theoretical developments: the speech-act particle ka often…

Software Architectures for Human-Machine Interaction Using Natural Language

The importance of being Cognate

2022

This study will introduce a tool – termed NLPYTALY – for the automatictreatment of naturally-occurring texts in Italian. The tool distinguishesconstructs with an ordinary verb from those with a support verb. Mean-ing is rendered by using cognate (i.e. etymologically related) semantic roles (CSR), which differ from other roles because they are expressed withthe content morpheme of the predicate licensing arguments. CSRs offer anumber of advantages: they can be semi-automatically derived and use the who-does-what model. Besides, they facilitate the detection of anaphoric chains and produce a foreground/background opposition of the namedentities. Finally, they permit the construction of a chro…

Creating a semantically-enhanced cloud services environment through ontology evolution

2014

Currently, the availability of Web resources has grown enormously to the point that whatever a user needs at a given moment can potentially be found on the Internet. These resources are not limited to data items anymore, functionality delivered through some sort of service architectural model is also offered on the Internet. In the last few years, cloud computing has emerged as one of the most popular computing models to provide services over the Internet. However, as the number of available cloud services increases, the problem of service discovery and selection arises. Experience indicates that semantic technologies can provide the basis for enhanced and more precise search processes. In …

Deep multimodal fusion for semantic image segmentation: A survey

2021

International audience; Recent advances in deep learning have shown excellent performance in various scene understanding tasks. However, in some complex environments or under challenging conditions, it is necessary to employ multiple modalities that provide complementary information on the same scene. A variety of studies have demonstrated that deep multimodal fusion for semantic image segmentation achieves significant performance improvement. These fusion approaches take the benefits of multiple information sources and generate an optimal joint prediction automatically. This paper describes the essential background concepts of deep multimodal fusion and the relevant applications in compute…

Concentrated Solar Power: Ontologies for Solar Radiation Modeling and Forecasting

2014

This chapter considers the possibility of formally representing implicit and explicit knowledge of solar radiation modeling and forecasting by means of ontologies, with particular reference to the implications of concentrated solar power. The various applications discussed in the literature include various methods, such as spectral, parametric and empirical models, artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic approaches, as well as satellite and ground based imaging techniques. We want to use the principles of semantic technologies and formal ontologies, to represent knowledge in solar radiation models. The purpose is to capture the semantics of information and realize a system for sharing an…
