Tarski’s t-scheme as an alleged basis of Montague semantics

2007

My point in this paper is to focus on some details of Alfred Tarski’s writing that in my opinion have not been aptly represented — or aptly rejected — in Richard Montague’s grammar and to agree with those who share Tarski’s view that human language is something uncapturable. The paper consists of two parts, concerning 1) some attempts to formalize the non-declarative utterances, and 2) the limitations of T-scheme and of Montague grammar.

Multi-pass execution of functional logic programs

1994

An operational semantics for functional logic programs is presented. In such programs functional terms provide for reduction of expressions, provided that they ground. The semantics is based on multi-pass evaluation techniques originally developed for attribute grammars. Program execution is divided into two phases: (1) construction of an incomplete proof tree, and (2) its decoration into a complete proof tree. The construction phase applies a modified SLD-resolution scheme, and the decoration phase a partial (multi-pass) traversal over the tree. The phase partition is generated by static analysis where data dependencies are extracted for the functional elements of the program. The method g…

Fostering Teacher-Student Interaction and Learner Autonomy by the I-TUTOR Maps

2014

The paper analyses the use of an automatically generated map as a mediator; that map visually represents the study domain of a university course and fosters the co-activity between teachers and stu- dents. In our approach the role of the teacher is meant as a media- tor between the student and knowledge. The mediation (and not the transmission) highlights a process in which theres no deterministic rela- tion between teaching and learning. Learning is affected by the students previous experiences, their own modalities of acquisition and by the in- puts coming from the environment. The learning path develops when the teachers and the students visions approach and, partly, overlap. In this cas…

Knowledge engineering and semantic formalism of symbolic relations. From medieval network to web 3.0

2020

A search has always been at the center of human concerns, the one of conditions and means to represent, to control well, and to communicate effectively with his environment. While technological advances and electronic gadgets such as smartphones, the Web, and online social networks currently allow addressing this concern, it has not always been the case. Our works in this thesis treat medieval documents considered as a medium of communication and as a model of the social network in the Middle Ages. These documents are called medieval illuminations. They were luxurious paintings used in that time to represent the environment and ideal world for elites such as prince, duke, etc. Those paintin…

A note on validity in law and regulatory systems (position paper)

2012

This is position paper is located at the theoretical crossroads of several projects: CAPER, EU Grant Agreement 261712; CROWDSOURCING DER2012-39492-C02-0, SINTELNET FP7-ICT-2009-C-286380; CONSUMEDIA INNPACTO IPT-2011-1015-430000; CROWD-CRISSCONTROL IPT-2012-0968-390000. The notion of validity fulfils a crucial role in legal theory. The emerging Web 3.0 opens a new landscape where Semantic Web languages, legal ontologies, and the construction of Normative Multiagent Systems are built up to cover new regulatory needs. Conceptual models for complex regulatory systems shape the characteristic features of rules, norms and principles in different ways. This position paper outlines one of such mult…

Semantic annotation and big data techniques for patent information processing

2017

This thesis analyzes approaches to generate semantic annotations on patent records, as well as on other structured data, by relying on the structure and semantic representation of documents. Information in patent records reflects how real-world technologies evolve, and the approximately 3 million annual new patent applications capture the global inventive frontier. The volume of this information is too big to be effectively analyzed purely with human effort, necessitating Big data approaches to analyze it with computer aided tools and techniques. Big data is a term that describes a massive volume of structured, semi structured and unstructured data that is so large to the point that it is d…

Semantic Catalogue to Manage Data Sources in Disaster Management System

2016

International audience; With the climate change, disasters occur more frequently and the need for efficient disaster management systems becomes highly recommended to save lives. This paper deals with a study of existing systems, with the intention of determining the main recent improvement in the domain. The heterogeneous data integration process is a major central point. Thus, a semantic system with three main components is proposed as a new position in the disaster management systems. These three components are a knowledge base, a reasoner and a semantic catalogue. The knowledge base provides a controlled vocabulary and allows storing information retrieval. The semantic catalogue facilita…

Analogical reasoning performance and organization is influenced by the type of semantic distractors : an investigation with adults

2015

International audience; The way participants adapt their search to the specifics of different types of analogies is not fully understood. We compared the effects of two types of semantic distractors. The first were related to C by a semantic relation which had nothing to do with the semantic relation used in the A:B pairs, whereas the second, the so-called "double distractors", were not only related to C but also had a semantic relation similar to the one linking A to B. We used eye-tracking measurements in addition to reaction time and performance indices. We found that performance decreased, and that the solution set was less explored visually with the double distractors than with the for…

Verbal fluency in school-aged Spanish children: analysis of clustering and switching organizational strategies, employing different semantic categori…

2021
