Do distractors interfere with memory for study pairs in associative recognition?
2006
In an associative recognition task, distractors generally consist of a rearrangement of the items composing the study pairs. This makes it possible that processing the distractors generates retroactive interference on memory for the study pairs. In Experiment 1, we explored this possibility in a yes/no recognition test concerning previously learned arbitrary associations between visual symbols and auditory syllables. Rearranged pairs had a deleterious impact on the accuracy and the speed of responses to related correct pairs. This effect did not vary as a function of the number of training blocks, and furthermore, in Experiment 2, the same effect was observed for overlearned small multiplic…
Alle Wege Führen Zum Text
2016
The intention of this chapter is to review the development of linguistic research during the twentieth century in Europe and the United States, in order to show that the genesis of text linguistics as a comprehensive theoretical framework was necessary, considering the events from a post-eventum perspective. Firstly, structural linguistics is presented as well as its main exponents; secondly, generative linguistics is discussed; thirdly, the genesis and the development of text linguistics is presented. Concerning the structural linguistics, the key issues investigated by 4 linguists (namely, de Saussure, Benveniste, Hjelmslev and Bloomfield) are summarized. Concerning the generative linguis…
Case assignment, case concord, and quantificational case constructions
2011
Abstract This paper examines a controversial and particularly complex case phenomenon called quantificational case attested in a number of historically unrelated Slavonic and Finno-Ugric languages, and attempts to establish certain novel cross-linguistic generalizations and conclusions. In particular, it will be argued that (i) instead of standard one-to-one case assignment, in which one case assigner is case-related to one case assignee, a many-to-many case flow is attested; (ii) nominal case is not a privilege of full DPs, arguments or thematic roles; (iii) case reflects either local or nonlocal functional structure, whether in the verbal or nominal domain; and that (iv) there is no disti…

Modulation in alpha band activity reflects syntax composition: an MEG study of minimal syntactic binding
2021
Successful sentence comprehension requires the binding, or composition, of multiple words into larger structures to establish meaning. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we investigated the neural mechanisms involved in binding of language at the level of syntax, in a task in which contributions from semantics were minimized. Participants were auditorily presented with minimal sentences that required binding (pronoun and pseudo-verb with the corresponding morphological inflection; "she grushes") and wordlists that did not require binding (two pseudo-verbs; "cugged grushes"). Relative to the no binding wordlist condition, we found that syntactic binding in a minimal sentence structure was a…
Stit Frames as Action Systems
2015
Stit semantics gives an account of action from a certain perspective: actions are seen not as operations performed in action systems and yielding new states of affairs, but rather as selections of preexistent trajectories of the system in time. Main problems of stit semantics are recapitulated. The interrelations between stit semantics and the approach based on ordered action systems are discussed more fully.
Representation theory treatment of measurement semantics for ratio, ordinal and nominal scales
1997
Within the scope of the representational theory a formal framework for description of semantic aspects of measurement on different scales is proposed. This is done by means of a first-order formal logical system consisting of a set of empirical predicates which play the part of a data structure in the framework, a set of operations by means of which syntactically correct statements can be formed; a set of axioms being true statements and a set of numerical statements which is an aggregation of potential measurement results carrying a meaningful load. On this basis the notation of semantic information on various scales is introduced and some common claims about the measurement semantic infor…
Theognis of Megara and the Divine Creating Power in the Framework of Semiotic Textology: An Application of János Sándor Petöfi’s Theory to Archaic Gr…
2012
This paper is a demonstration of an application of Semiotic Textology to a limited case study. The main aspects of Semiotic Textology, the theory elaborated by Petöfi, are presented; secondly the linguistic aspects of the interpretation of lines 133-134 of the Theognis of Megara's poem, analysed in the framework of said theory, are presented. All the relevant syntactic, semantic, pragmatic information involved in text processing have been considered. Through fixed steps, it is shown that text processing is not exclusively a grammatical activity, because within a theoretical interpretation an Interpreter needs a number of contextual hypotheses, in order to understand the author's ontology. ©…
The what, when, where, and how of visual word recognition
2014
A long-standing debate in reading research is whether printed words are perceived in a feedforward manner on the basis of orthographic information, with other representations such as semantics and phonology activated subsequently, or whether the system is fully interactive and feedback from these representations shapes early visual word recognition. We review recent evidence from behavioral, functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, and biologically plausible connectionist modeling approaches, focusing on how each approach provides insight into the temporal flow of information in the lexical system. We conclude that, consistent with interactive a…
