Semantic Annotation and Retrieval of Services in the Cloud
2013
Recently, the economy has taken a downturn, which has forced many companies to reduce their costs in IT. This fact has, conversely, benefited the adoption of innovative computing models such as cloud computing, which allow businesses to reduce their fixed IT costs through outsourcing. As the number of cloud services available on the Internet grows, it is more and more difficult for companies to find those that can meet their needs. Under these circumstances, enabling a semantically-enriched search engine for cloud solutions can be a major breakthrough. In this paper, we present a fully-fledged platform based on semantics that (1) assist in generating a semantic description of cloud services…
An SDI for archaeological data with a RESTful interface to semantically modeled information
2013
International audience; The poster focuses on current activities carried out within a bi-national research project "HIGEOMES - Die historische Geographie Obermesopotamiens im 2. Jahrtausend v. Chr.". Motivated by the increase of archaeological and epigraphic sources in recent decades the project aims at an integrated analysis and transparent access of these heterogeneous data. A designed application needs to consider that archaeological data contain absolute geography - the association with a specific geographic location, while epigraphic data imply relative geography - the topological relation of places. The solution is provided by a Web GIS interface supporting scientists to better unders…
LC3 A Spatial-temporal Data Model to Study Qualified Land Cover Changes
2015
International audience; Land cover changes caused by humans have reached points never witnessed in history before. Consequences of these changes are environmental degradation, pollution of water, biodiversity loss and climate change among others. It is in this frame that the interest of the scientific community for this type of events has increased in the last decades. Nowadays, researchers have access to sophisticated monitoring tools and techniques. However, the new threat is that over abundance of information would hide relevant facts and processes. In our research we use data from the CORINE (Coordination of Information on the Environment) program. This program has compiled land cover i…
Using Semantic Web Technologies to Follow the Evolution of Entities in Time and Space
2013
International audience; In this paper we present the "continuum model". Our work follows a "perdurantism" approach and is designed to handle dynamic phenomena extending the 4D-fluent with the use of semantic web technologies. In our approach we represent dynamic entities as constituted by timeslices each with semantic, geometric, temporal and identity components. Our model is able to link the diverse representations of an entity and allows the inference of qualitative information from quantitative one. The inference results are later added to the ontology in order to improve knowledge about the phenomenon. The model has been implemented using OWL and SWRL. Our preliminary results are promis…
Integrating user preference to similarity queries over medical images datasets
2010
International audience; Large amounts of images from medical exams are being stored in databases, so developing retrieval techniques is an important research problem. Retrieval based on the image visual content is usually better than using textual descriptions, as they seldom gives every nuances that the user may be interested in. Content-based image retrieval employs the similarity among images for retrieval. However, similarity is evaluated using numeric methods, and they often orders the images by similarity in a way rather distinct from the user's intention. In this paper, we propose a technique to allow expressing the user's preference over attributes associated to the images, so simil…
Guest Editors' Introduction: Multimedia Metadata and Semantic Management
2009
This special issue assesses the current status and technologies and describes major challenges and proper solutions for effective multimedia production and management related to evolving Semantic Web strategies. The included articles, which cover different facets of the semantic management of multimedia and multimedia metadata from retrieval and processing to consumption and presentation, represent a step forward in research targeted at improving aspects of the semantic metadata life cycle.
The minerality of wine: which status for the lexeme in which situations ?
2014
International audience; This paper aims at discussing the meaning, the relevance, and the status of the lexeme minerality in consumers’ and wine professionals’ discourses within the French-speaking world. It takes as a starting point the obvious role played by such a lexeme in wine tasting notes, in prescriptive texts, and in the marketing sector. Following previous studies [1]-[2] that have shown the instability of the notion for many speakers —including wine professionals— the discussion will focus on the status of this so-called term for each target group. The study is based on the analysis of two sub-corpora collected through a questionnaire addressed on the one hand to consumers and on …
Know Beyond Seeing: Combining Computer Vision with Semantic Reasoning
2018
International audience; To date, computer vision systems are limited to extract the digital data of what the cameras "see". However, the meaning of what they observe could be greatly enhanced by considering the environment and common-sense knowledge. A new approach to combine computer vision with semantic modeling has been developed. This approach extracts the knowledge from images and uses it to perform real-time reasoning according to the contextual information, events of interest and logic rules. The reasoning with image knowledge allows protecting the privacy of the users, to overcome some problems of computer vision such as occlusion and missed detections and to offer services such as …
Incorporating depth information into few-shot semantic segmentation
2021
International audience; Few-shot segmentation presents a significant challengefor semantic scene understanding under limited supervision.Namely, this task targets at generalizing the segmentationability of the model to new categories given a few samples. In order to obtain complete scene information, we extend theRGB-centric methods to take advantage of complementary depthinformation. In this paper, we propose a two-stream deep neuralnetwork based on metric learning. Our method, known as RDNet,learns class-specific prototype representations within RGB anddepth embedding spaces, respectively. The learned prototypesprovide effective semantic guidance on the corresponding RGBand depth query ima…
Semantics - Supportive Element for the Cooperative Evaluation of Geographical and Historical Information
2013
International audience; The emergence of the Semantic Web and its underlying knowledge technologies has brought changes in data han- dling. Transferring expert knowledge to machines through knowledge formalization provides us the required support in managing huge datasets like the information in the World Wide Web. In the field of geospatial technology semantic technologies not only entail the capability to achieve higher degree of data integration but also infer semantics to discover new and hidden knowledge. This is of particular interest in the field of archaeology, where complex interrelations among heterogeneous datasets exist. Although researches on seman- tics are active areas in geo…
