Diachrony and Neology: Semantic Change, Subjectivization and the Representation of Thinking. The Meaning of the Catalan Verb Esmar, from ‘Setting the…

2015

The study of neology is inextricably linked with the study of language change and, therefore, with diachrony. The aim of this paper is to describe the semant…

Defectivitat morfològica i variació sintàctica

2021

This paper discusses a case of parametric variation between Catalan and Spanish that concerns the fronting possibilities within the CP domain (the so-called ÇLeft PeripheryÈ). In particular, attention is paid to Catalan’s weak left peripheral activity, which prevents it from generating sentences that involve a Çmild focalizationÈ pattern very common in Spanish (e.g., «Mucha tontería dice el Gobierno» vs. *«Molta ximpleria diuel Govern»), first noted by Torrego (1980) and further explored by Uriagereka (1988). Interestingly, the same behavior is observed in the v*P domain, which accounts for the fact that VSO sentences (generated through movement of the subject to a specifier position, as Or…

‘bien entendu’ vs ‘naturellement’: deux façons de désubjectiviser le dire

2011

Our study focuses on how the discourse markers (DM) participate in the construction of discursive alterity. In our approach, the DM builds, for an assertion, a guarantor with its own semantics, which is the semantics of the lexical element constituting the basis of DM. Naturellement and bien entendu build referential value which ”disempowers” the speaker as a guarantor of his words. This desubjectivation is realized differently in each case analyzed, and is determined by the semantic identity of the DM. In this article we analyze how the DM build modulated commitment of the speaker in his role as the guarantor, convened by the semantics of the DM in the ”disresponsibilization” of the speake…

Semantics of Voids within Data: Ignorance-Aware Machine Learning

2021

Operating with ignorance is an important concern of geographical information science when the objective is to discover knowledge from the imperfect spatial data. Data mining (driven by knowledge discovery tools) is about processing available (observed, known, and understood) samples of data aiming to build a model (e.g., a classifier) to handle data samples that are not yet observed, known, or understood. These tools traditionally take semantically labeled samples of the available data (known facts) as an input for learning. We want to challenge the indispensability of this approach, and we suggest considering the things the other way around. What if the task would be as follows: how to buil…

Adding ‘Sense’ to Conceptual Modeling : An Interdisciplinary Approach

2019

In this paper, our aim is to widen the prevailing foundations of conceptual modeling theories and practices, particularly in the context of information systems development. The approach shifts the focus from the link between a model and the modelled reality to the link between human cognition and the model. Our approach combines theoretical issues of different disciplines relevant to conceptual modeling. We shall make an explicit distinction between individual conceptions and interpersonal concepts and show how this distinction could be utilized to have conceptual models of a better consistency. We wish that this article could also serve as a starting point for a profound scientific discuss…

A role for backward transitional probabilities in word segmentation?

2008

A number of studies have shown that people exploit transitional probabilities between successive syllables to segment a stream of artificial continuous speech into words. It is often assumed that what is actually exploited are the forward transitional probabilities (given XY, the probability that X will be followed by Y ), even though the backward transitional probabilities (the probability that Y has been preceded by X) were equally informative about word structure in the languages involved in those studies. In two experiments, we showed that participants were able to learn the words from an artificial speech stream when the only available cues were the backward transitional probabilities.…

Detecting impaired language processing in patients with mild cognitive impairment using around‐the‐ear cEEgrid electrodes

2021

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the term used to identify those individuals with subjective and objective cognitive decline but with preserved activities of daily living and an absence of dementia. Although MCI can impact functioning in different cognitive domains, most notably episodic memory, relatively little is known about the comprehension of language in MCI. In this study, we used around-the-ear electrodes (cEEGrids) to identify impairments during language comprehension in patients with MCI. In a group of 23 patients with MCI and 23 age-matched controls, language comprehension was tested in a two-word phrase paradigm. We examined the oscillatory changes following word onset as a fu…

Innovation in Neurosurgery: The Concept of Cognitive Mapping

2019

In recent years, advances in cortical-subcortical mapping, intraoperative neurophysiology, and neuropsychology have increased the ability to remove intrinsic brain tumors, expanding indications and maximizing the extent of resection. This has provided a significant improvement in progression-free survival, time of malignant transformation (in low-grade gliomas), and overall survival. Although current techniques enable preservation of language and motor functions during surgery, the maintenance of a complex set of functions defined with the term cognition is not always achievable. Cognition is defined as every neural process underlying a high human function and includes motor haptic and visu…

Laika apzīmējumi Homēra Odisejas valodā

2018
