Look at them and they will notice you : Distractor-independent attentional capture by direct gaze in change blindness

2018

Humans have shown a detection advantage of direct vs. averted gaze stimuli in visual search tasks. However, instead of attentional capture by direct gaze, the detection advantage in visual search may depend on attention-grabbing potential of the distractor stimuli to which the target needs to be compared. We investigated attentional capture by direct gaze using the change blindness paradigm, in which successful detection does not require comparison between the target and the distractor items. Participants detected a masked gaze direction change in one of four simultaneously presented schematic faces. The distractor gaze directions were systematically varied across three experiments. Changes…

Multimodality: Art as a Meaning-Making Process

2021

AbstractThe authors of the book see multimodality as intrinsic to human communication and texts, and as consisting of a multiplicity of signs. This chapter discusses how this applies in educational settings, to examine how different modes of communication are intertwined and utilized in learning, including children’s creative learning practices. In this, the authors use the semiotic concepts that operate in all communicative contexts: Field, tenor, and mode. Through them, the authors view the CLLP as a space that enables social activities, exploration of cultural, social, and societal contents and topics, and the development of social relationships. All this occurs through various communica…

Scientific and Design Stances

2010

Human technology interaction is a strange field of expertise, because both academics and industry are interested in it. And yet, every now and then, it becomes apparent that academics and industry do not always see eye to eye (Carroll, 1997). They seem to think in different manner. While scientists look for how things are, industry mostly seeks out how things should be. Indeed, sometimes two very different stances behind the basic thinking of the two important human–technology interaction (HTI) communities surface. Scientists primarily are interested in general laws and principles, even eternal truths with no exceptions. They want to identify general laws and use them to explain individual …

Wiki as a collaborative writing tool in teacher education: Evaluation and suggestions for effective use

2014

The students did not collaborate much by revising each other's contributions to the wikis. The students did not use the discussion page to address critical reflections on collaboration.Factors influencing wiki-based collaborative writing in teacher education are discussed.Suggestions for effective use of wikis as collaborative writing tools are presented. Wiki technology provides new opportunities to foster collaborative writing in teacher education. To empirically evaluate the level of collaborative writing in a wiki-based environment, this article used three methods and their combination. The first method was the history function that records all students' actions, enabling to trace all ch…

Conduction band polarization in some CMR materials

2000

First principles electronic structure calculations reveal certain important common features in the conduction band polarization of many of the newly examined colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) materials. Most CMR compounds seem to possess a localized, magnetic band slightly below the Fermi energy. This localized band transfers polarization to a relatively broad conduction band. The nature of the two bands in different systems can be quite distinct. In the perovskite-derived manganese oxides, the magnetic band is derived from $Mn t_{2g}$ states while the conduction band is derived from Mn e states. In the chalcospinel $Fe_{^0.^5}$ $Cu_{^0.^5}$ $Cr_{2}$$ S_{4}$ , the $Crt_{2g}$ states which are…

Subdirectly irreducible generalized sums of upper semilattice ordered systems of algebras

2002

In [15] the generalized sum of an upper (F 1 , F 2 )-semilattice ordered system of algebras was defined. In this paper we find necessary and sufficient conditions under which this construction yields subdirectly irreducible algebras.

Dissipative operators and differential equations on Banach spaces

1991

If we consider the initial value problem Inline Equation $$x'(t) = f(t,x(t)),{\text{ }}x(0) = {x_0}$$ on the real line, it is well known that one—sided bounds like Inline Equation $$\left[ {f(t,x) - f\left( {t,y} \right)} \right]\left( {x - {\text{y}}} \right) \leqslant \omega {\left( {x - y} \right)^2}$$ give much better information about the behaviour of solutions than the Lipschitz- type estimates Inline Equation $$ \left| {f\left( {t,x} \right) - f\left( {t,y} \right)} \right| \leqslant L\left| {x - y} \right|,$$ because ω, unlike L, may be negative.

Nonlocal Heat Content

2019

The heat content of a Borel measurable set \(D \subset \mathbb {R}^N\) at time t is defined by M. van der Berg in [69] (see also [70]) as: $$\displaystyle \mathbb {H}_D(t) = \int _D T(t) {\chi }_D (x) dx, $$ with (T(t))t≥0 being the heat semigroup in \(L^2(\mathbb {R}^N)\). Therefore, the heat content represents the amount of heat in D at time t if in D the initial temperature is 1 and in \(\mathbb {R}^N \setminus D\) the initial temperature is 0.
