Competency-based Teaching of Shakespeare: How to Master King Lear

2011

Shakespeare’s hypotext has invited so many hypertextual transformations over the last four hundred years that twenty-first century students deserve the chance of digging into this rich mine of information and dramatic possibilities. The practical approach of a competency-based teaching method offers great advantages over traditional practices in that it devises a series of specific tasks for students to perform. As a result, their linguistic, historical, theatrical and intercultural skills are enhanced to such an extent that they acquire the competence they need to approach other early modern texts in a confident manner. This paper suggests a variety of tasks which can help students achieve…

Visual Representa of a Woman in the Semiotic Landscape of the Baltic States

2014

Linguistic landscape (LL) research of nine cities of the Baltic States shows that feminine discourse is of an essential significance in the public space. This is linguistically proved by feminine person’s names in ergonyms, also by female ergonyms and graffiti themes. However, there are multi-modal advertisements reflecting women and female items in the public space, and they are to be viewed from the perspective of the semiotic landscape. There are 294 photos reflecting a woman excerpted from the LL data base to describe visual images of a woman, focusing on the archetypes and concepts on woman’s role in society. There is a semiotic landscape research method, perception of a visual identit…

Literary critical narrative in latvian daily press

2013

Promocijas darba LITERATŪRKRITISKAIS NARATĪVS LATVIEŠU DIENAS PRESĒ Anotācija Promocijas darbā Literatūrkritiskais naratīvs dienas presē latviešu dienas laikrakstu literatūrkritiskie naratīvi tiek analizēti ar semiotiskā komunikācijas modeļa palīdzību. Literatūrkritiskie naratīvi veido daļu no mediju kultūras komunikācijas procesa un sastāv no zīmēm – semantiskām un sintaktiskām makrostruktūrām, kas radušās semiotiskas darbības rezultātā. Makrostruktūru klātbūtne un izvietojums tekstā nosaka laikrakstu literatūrkritiskā teksta tipus. Promocijas darbā analizētie preses teksti sistematizēti, veidojot sešus tipus: grāmatu recenzijas, īsās ziņas, intervijas, blogus, garākus avīžrakstus un inter…

The apocryphal: prototype of a subjectivity in crisis

2013

The introduction of this paper reviews the concept of the subject, which originated in classical antiquity and developed in Western culture up to the Enlightenment and Romanticism with the addition of new aspects but without questioning its foundation as a substantial Subject. The first major crisis of this received view took place in the first quarter of the twentieth century after the assimilation of the works by Marx, Freud or Nietzsche, which laid the foundations of a thorough criticism on the subject. One important feature of this crisis was the proliferation of apocryphal writing, which reached new models in the works of Fernando Pessoa and Antonio Machado. Between them lies the scope…

Semiotica e Matematiche: un'introduzione

2014

The foundations of Peircean's and Saussurean's Semiotics itself is centered on two mathematical ideas coming from differential calculus and theory of continuity. Other mathematical ideas can be founded in some of the most important ideas in Semiotics. The papers investigates the relationships between Mathematics and Semiotics in both a historical and theoretical way.

Matières de table. Fantaisies gourmandes de Jacques Fontanille.

2021

Following the figurative trajectory of gustatory sensitivity in the work of Jacques Fontanille, three key moments stand out: (1) the entry through the sensory and the flavors, marked by the autonomy of the figurative dimension in the sensitive deployment of the flavor; (2) the putting to the test of the semiotic exploration in different fields of expression: at the table, through "the setting in plate", around the wine; (3) the figurative consistency of the food form as manifestation of a form of life, with its modalities and its modulations

Dal martire al cacciatore. Traduzioni intersemiotiche dell’eroismo antimafia

2022

Traveling material↔semiotic environments of disability, rehabilitation, and physical activity.

2020

In this article, we apply narrative dialogism and new materialism to health research. We examine how material↔semiotic environments (MSEs) affect the rehabilitation process of Patrick, a man who exercised with the aim to recover from spinal cord injury. The MSEs are considered embedded subcases within the overall holistic case of Patrick. Three MSEs were identified: the hospital gym, the personal gym, and the adapted gym. These are examined using the analytical lens of assemblages. First, the mutually affecting components of each MSE are described. Second, a larger environmental assemblage is identified, which is termed exercise-is-restitution assemblage. This composite assemblage illumina…

Effects of modelling on children's pretend play.

1989

The effects of modelling on pretend play were studied in children between 2.6 and 3.6 years of age by examining changes both in the action and language-based expressions of pretending. Three modelled scenes were demonstrated with the same realistic toys used by the child in the pre-modelling phase. The results gave support to the idea of the effectiveness of modelling. The effects of the modelled scenes were clearest among children whose pre-modelling play consisted of object-centred actions including few of pretending. The post-modelling play of this subgroup showed better quality of action and language categories and integration measures. Among the decentred players no significant action …

Swimming-style synesthesia.

2010

The traditional and predominant understanding of synesthesia is that a sensory input in one modality (inducer) elicits sensory experiences in another modality (concurrent). Recent evidence suggests an important role of semantic representations of inducers. We report here the cases of two synesthetes, experienced swimmers, for whom each swimming style evokes another synesthetic color. Importantly, synesthesia is evoked also in the absence of direct sensory stimulation, i.e., the proprioceptive inputs during swimming. To evoke synesthetic colors, it is sufficient to evoke the concept of a given swimming style e.g., by showing a photograph of a swimming person. A color-consistency test and a S…
