‘My Language! Heavens!’: Strange Tongues and the Denial of Mimesis in The Tempest

2008

Signals of intensification and attenuation in orchestra and choir conduction

2017

Based on a model of communication according to which not only words but also body signals constitute lexicons (Poggi, 2007), the study presented aimes at building a lexicon of conductors’ multimodal behaviours requesting intensification and attenuation of sound intensity. In a corpus of concerts and rehearsals, the conductors’ body signals requesting to play or sing forte, piano, crescendo, diminuendo were analysed through an annotation scheme describing the body signals, their meanings, and their semiotic devices: generic codified (the same as in everyday language); specific codified (shared with laypeople but with specific meanings in conduction); direct iconic, (resemblance between visua…

In the recent …

A Semiotic Approach to the Design of Non-speech Sounds

2006

In the field of auditory display there is currently a lack of theoretical support for the design of non-speech sounds as elements of a user interface. Sound design methods are often based on ad hoc choices or the personal preferences of the designer. A method is proposed in this paper based on a semiotic approach to the design of non-speech sounds. In this approach, the design process is conceptualised by referring to structural semiotics, acknowledging the unique qualities of non-speech sounds, as a mode of conveying information. This method is based on a rich use scenario presented to a design panel. A case study where the design method has been applied is presented and evaluated. Finally…

Hearing Early Modern Music Through the Contemporary

2022

This chapter focuses on how contemporary music practice interacts with early modern1 aesthetics. Two projects, in which Georg Philip Telemann’s solo fantasias are interspersed with contemporary techniques and repertoire, serve as case studies. Firstly, the flutist Felix Renggli commissioned new pieces from 11 contemporary Swiss composers, to be inserted in between Telemann’s 12 Fantasias for Solo Flute. Secondly, violinist Aisha Orazbayeva performed a set of Telemann’s Solo Fantasias for Violin using extended techniques pioneered by Salvatore Sciarrino in his 6 caprices. In this text I use these two different approaches as case studies for how early modern music, exemplified by Telemann, ca…

Bilingual corporate websites - from translation to transcreation?

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Journal of Specialised Translation. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.jostrans.org/issue20/art_rike.pdf Open Access As an increasing number of companies see the world as their marketplace, bilingual and/or multilingual websites are becoming increasingly common, and the demand for translations in this domain is growing. Corporate websites are multimodal, and verbal messages, images, layout and sometimes animations and sound interact to create the rhetoric on the site. With web texts being instantly available to readers anywhere, the translator’s role as a cultural mediator attains a special significance as the texts may be access…

Ģeometrisko zīmju un to uztveres semiotiska analīze latviešu zīmolos

2016

Constructing the Moral Order of a Relationship in Couples Therapy

2016

Although couples therapy is rightly seen as one modality of the psychotherapies, many salient aspects of the process are not revealed by psychological theory. These have to do with how, in therapeutic conversations, the couple relationship is presented and performed as a social institution with a particular social and moral order. The moral order of a relationship includes more or less articulated and shared understandings of what is valued and what is not, what are the loyalties, duties, and responsibilities expected from the partners, and the grounds for evaluating actions. It also includes expectations concerning how value, concern, and respect are communicated. In this case study, based…
