Nonlinear femtosecond pulse propagation in an all-solid photonic bandgap fiber
2009
Nonlinear femtosecond pulse propagation in an all-solid photonic bandgap fiber is experimentally and numerically investigated. Guiding light in such fiber occurs via two mechanisms: photonic bandgap in the central silica core or total internal reflection in the germanium doped inclusions. By properly combining spectral filtering, dispersion tailoring and pump coupling into the fiber modes, we experimentally demonstrate efficient supercontinuum generation with controllable spectral bandwidth.
Developing a Cross-Disciplinary Framework for Collaborative Research in Multi- and Intercultural Education
2014
This chapter sets out an approach to professional development and team building in a newly established faculty in a Finnish university. A method is given for mapping the academic and professional experiences of eight faculty members across disciplinary boundaries to arrive at a cross-disciplinary framework for collaborative research in multi- and intercultural education. Building cumulatively on faculty members’ expertise, the mapping revealed three interconnected themes as a basis for collaborative research: boundary transactions between knowledge, skill and language; boundary objects as representations and carriers of culture; and technological mediation of boundary encounters. A collecti…
Lamotrigine use in pregnancy and risk of orofacial cleft and other congenital anomalies
2016
Objective: To test previous signals of a risk of orofacial cleft (OC) and clubfoot with exposure to the antiepileptic lamotrigine, and to investigate risk of other congenital anomalies (CA).Methods: This was a population-based case–malformed control study based on 21 EUROCAT CA registries covering 10.1 million births (1995–2011), including births to 2005 in which the clubfoot signal was generated and a subsequent independent study population of 6.3 million births. A total of 226,806 babies with CA included livebirths, stillbirths, and terminations of pregnancy following prenatal diagnosis. First-trimester lamotrigine monotherapy exposure in OC cases and clubfoot cases was compared to other …
Real-life evaluation of a rapid extraction-free SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR assay (COVID-19 PCR Fast-L) for the diagnosis of COVID-19.

Real-life evaluation of a rapid antigen test (Panbio™ COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device) for SARS-CoV-2 detection in asymptomatic close contacts of COVID…
2020
ABSTRACTObjectivesThere is limited information on the performance of rapid antigen detection (RAD) tests to identify SARS-CoV-2-infected asymptomatic individuals. In this field study, we evaluated the Panbio™ COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device (Abbott Diagnostics, Jena, Germany) for the purpose.MethodsA total of 634 individuals (355 female; median age, 37 years; range, 9-87) were enrolled. Household (n=338) contacts were tested at a median of 2 days (range, 1-7) after diagnosis of the index case and non-household contacts (n=296) at a median of 6 days (range, 1-7) after exposure. RAD testing was carried out at the point of care. The RT-PCR test used was the TaqPath COVID-19 Combo Kit (Thermo Fis…
Enhanced field-of-view integral imaging display using multi-Köhler illumination.
2014
A common drawback in 3D integral imaging displays is the appearance of pseudoimages beyond the viewing angle. These pseudoimages appear when the light rays coming from each elemental image are not passing through the corresponding microlens, and a set of barriers must be used to avoid this flipping effect. We present a pure optical arrangement based on Köhler illumination to generate these barriers thus avoiding the pseudoimages. The proposed system does not use additional lenses to project the elemental images, so no optical aberrations are introduced. As an added benefit, Köhler illumination provides a higher contrast 3D display. This work was supported in part by the Plan Nacional I + D …
Synthesis of New 2-{[(Phenoxy or Phenyl)acetyl]amino}benzoic Acid Derivatives as 3α-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Inhibitors and Potential Antiinflamm…
1995
A number of 2-([(phenoxy or phenyl)acetyl]amino)benzoic acid derivatives were prepared in about 50% yield from (phenoxy or phenyl)acetyl chloride and anthranilic acid derivatives. All the compounds were tested as in vitro inhibitors of 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, since enzyme inhibition predicts potential antiinflammatory activity in vivo. The most active compounds 3 l, m, s are about 3.5 times more active than acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). Activity is influenced by electronic as well as steric effects.
Macular sensitivity and structure in idiopathic epiretinal membranes 12 months after surgical treatment
2013
Purpose: To evaluate macular sensitivity (MS) change and its correlation with visual acuity (VA) and Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgical treatment. Methods: Prospective, monocenter, interventional case series. We included 49 patients (49 eyes) with an idiopathic ERM scheduled for a surgical treatment. Among these patients, 40 were evaluated at 3 and 6 months (M3, M6), and 31 at 12 months (M12) after ERM and internal limiting membrane removal. At each visit a measurement of best-corrected visual acuity (ETDRS), a microperimetry and a SD-OCT were performed for all patients. Results: The …
An FPGA aligner for short read mapping
2012
The rapid growth of short read datasets poses a new challenge to the mapping of short reads to a reference genome in terms of sensitivity and execution speed. In this work, we present a parallel architecture for short read mapping utilizing field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based hardware. The computation intensive semi-global alignment and the hash table lookup operations are mapped onto an FPGA. The proposed Align Core is implemented with a parallel block structure to gain computational efficiency. We present a new parallel block-wise alignment structure to approximate the conventional dynamic programming algorithm. The performance of our FPGA aligner is compared to the GASSST and BWA …
A hybrid short read mapping accelerator
2013
Background The rapid growth of short read datasets poses a new challenge to the short read mapping problem in terms of sensitivity and execution speed. Existing methods often use a restrictive error model for computing the alignments to improve speed, whereas more flexible error models are generally too slow for large-scale applications. A number of short read mapping software tools have been proposed. However, designs based on hardware are relatively rare. Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have been successfully used in a number of specific application areas, such as the DSP and communications domains due to their outstanding parallel data processing capabilities, making them a compet…
