Standardization of a bioassay for thyrotropin receptor stimulating autoantibodies.
2015
Cell-based bioassays for functional thyroid stimulating autoantibodies (TSAb) are sensitive diagnostic tools. However, there is no bioassay available that is standardized with international reference material. We aimed to promote the standardization of the test results among laboratories that perform TSAb bioassays and calibrate TSAb levels against the second international standard (IS) 08/204 from the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC).Serum TSAb activity was measured with a FDA-cleared bioassay that utilizes CHO cells expressing a chimeric thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) and a c-AMP response-element-dependent luciferase. The IS was applied for calibration. TSAb re…
The Large Hadron–Electron Collider at the HL-LHC
2021
The Large Hadron-Electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy-recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operations. This report represents an update to the LHeC's conceptual design report (CDR), published in 2012. It comprises new results on the parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, and electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LH…
Individual Differences in Adolescents’ Civic Engagement: The Role of Civic Discussions with Parents and Environmental Sensitivity
2023
The main goal of the current study was to examine the direct and moderating effects of civic dis-cussions with parents and environmental sensitivity using both the total score and its specific di-mensions (i.e., Aesthetic Sensitivity, AES; Ease of Excitation, EOE; Low Sensitivity Threshold, LST) on youth civic engagement (attitudes and behaviours). The empirical analysis relied on a ques-tionnaire-based survey conducted on a sample of 438 adolescents (30% males), aged between 14 and 18 years (M = 16.50, SD = 1.36). We used a structural equation model (SEM) with latent vari-ables and the latent moderated structural equation (LMS) method to test our hypotheses. Our re-sults showed that civic …

Optically pumped Cs magnetometers enabling a high-sensitivity search for the neutron electric dipole moment
2020
An array of 16 laser-pumped scalar Cs magnetometers was part of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment taking data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in 2015 and 2016. It was deployed to measure the gradients of the experiment's magnetic field and to monitor their temporal evolution. The originality of the array lies in its compact design, in which a single near-infrared diode laser drives all magnetometers that are located in a high-vacuum chamber, with a selection of the sensors mounted on a high-voltage electrode. We describe details of the Cs sensors' construction and modes of operation, emphasizing the accuracy and sensitivity of the magnetic-field readout. We present two app…
Reliability Analysis of Three Homogeneous Fault-tolerant Inverter Topologies
2016
Abstract—In this article, non-redundant fault-tolerant inverter topologies are addressed. A novel fault-tolerant control strategy which enhances performances during post-fault operation is proposed. Benefits from the proposed strategy over conventional fault-tolerant topologies are investigated in terms of system reliability. Cost, post-fault performances, and system reliability of the proposed solution are compared with both a conventional triac-based fault-tolerant inverter and a T-type inverter. The reliability analysis of each selected configuration is carried out by means of Markov chains. The analysis is validated through a comparison of reliability and sensitivity curves. As shown by…
Review article: intestinal lymphoid nodular hyperplasia in children - the relationship to food hypersensitivity.
2012
SummaryBackground Lymphoid aggregates are normally found throughout the small and large intestine. Known as lymphoid nodular hyperplasia (LNH), these aggregates are observed especially in young children and are not associated with clinical symptoms being considered ‘physiological’. In children presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms the number and size of the lymphoid follicles are increased. Patients suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms (i.e. recurrent abdominal pain) should systematically undergo gastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy. With these indications LNH, especially of the upper but also of the lower gastrointestinal tract has been diagnosed, and in some children it may reflect …

Projecting biodiversity and wood production in future forest landscapes: 15 key modeling considerations
2017
A variety of modeling approaches can be used to project the future development of forest systems, and help to assess the implications of different management alternatives for biodiversity and ecosystem services. This diversity of approaches does however present both an opportunity and an obstacle for those trying to decide which modeling technique to apply, and interpreting the management implications of model output. Furthermore, the breadth of issues relevant to addressing key questions related to forest ecology, conservation biology, silviculture, economics, requires insights stemming from a number of distinct scientific disciplines. As forest planners, conservation ecologists, ecologica…
Fuzzy logic controller and game theory based distributed energy resources allocation
2020
Energy management and demand control through conventional energy generation sources are challenging for energy providers. Distributed energy resources (DERs) allocation near load centers may provide a suitable solution. The main contribution of the paper improves the voltage profile and reduce the active and reactive power losses in the distribution network. DERs are integrated with IEEE 33 bus system using fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and game theory for two different cases with unity and 0.9 power factor (PF) and compares with conventional methods of integration (i.e., modified novel method, power loss sensitivity method, voltage sensitivity analysis method). The capacity of DERs is optim…
