Power-constrained sensor selection and routing for cooperative detection in cognitive radios

2012

Given a spectrum-sensing network, a set of active nodes jointly aggregate sensed data at a preset frequency-band and simultaneously route this information to an arbitrarily chosen querying node through a power-constrained multi-hop path. Locally, each sensor node is assumed to be an energy-based detector. This work focuses on deriving algorithms that jointly optimize sensor selection and cooperative detection from which a power-efficient route to the querying node can be established, and then, a tree routing structure spanning the chosen nodes is constructed under a power budget constraint. Sensor information is sequentially aggregated along this optimized routing structure up to the queryi…

Reliable Coverage with Circumferential WMSNs

2021

This work tackles the closed peripheral coverage issue. Such circumferential surveillance is essential in numerous realistic applications where the goal is to ensure rapid detection of any unauthorized entry/exit of the monitored area. To respond to these requirements, peripheral WMSNs can be rapidly deployed around areas of interest (e.g., temporary military camps, natural or nuclear disasters, etc.). While it seems simple, this solution raises two major challenging issues. First, checking whether the deployed peripheral WMSN forms a closed shape around the monitored region. That is, any object trying to leave or access this area must be instantaneously detected by at least one multimedia …

Serial In-network Processing for Large Stationary Wireless Sensor Networks

2017

International audience; In wireless sensor networks, a serial processing algorithm browses nodes one by one and can perform different tasks such as: creating a schedule among nodes, querying or gathering data from nodes, supplying nodes with data, etc. Apart from the fact thatserial algorithms totally avoid collisions, numerous recent works have confirmed that these algorithms reduce communications andconsiderably save energy and time in large-dense networks. Yet, due to the path construction complexity, the proposed algorithmsare not optimal and their performances can be further enhanced. To do so, in the present paper, we propose a new serial processing algorithm that, in most of the case…

Design of an Adaptive Bayesian System for Sensor Data Fusion

2014

Many artificial intelligent systems exploit a wide set of sensor devices to monitor the environment. When the sensors employed are low-cost, off-the-shelf devices, such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), the data gathered through the sensory infrastructure may be affected by noise, and thus only partially correlated to the phenomenon of interest. One way of overcoming these limitations might be to adopt a high-level method to perform multi-sensor data fusion. Bayesian Networks (BNs) represent a suitable tool for performing refined artificial reasoning on heterogeneous sensory data, and for dealing with the intrinsic uncertainty of such data. However, the configuration of the sensory infrast…

Short-Term Sensory Data Prediction in Ambient Intelligence Scenarios

2014

Predicting data is a crucial ability for resource-constrained devices like the nodes of a Wireless Sensor Network. In the context of Ambient Intelligence scenarios, in particular, short-term sensory data prediction becomes a key enabler for more difficult tasks such as prolonging network lifetime, reducing the amount of communication required and improving user-environment interaction. In this chapter we propose a software module designed for clustered wireless sensor networks, able to predict various environmental quantities, namely temperature, humidity and light. The software module is supported by an ontology that describes the topology of the AmI scenario and the effects of the actuato…

Detection of User Activities in Intelligent Environments

2014

Research on Ambient Intelligence (AmI) focuses on the development of smart environments adaptable to the needs and preferences of their inhabitants. For this reason it is important to understand and model user preferences. In this chapter we describe a system to detect user behavior patterns in an intelligent workplace. The system is designed for a workplace equipped in the context of Sensor9k, a project carried out at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Palermo (Italy). © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Extracting Structured Knowledge From Sensor Data for Hybrid Simulation

2014

Obtaining continuous and detailed monitoring of indoor environments has today become viable, also thanks to the widespread availability of effective and flexible sensing technology; this paves the way for the design of practical Ambient Intelligence systems, and for their actual deployment in real-life contexts, which require advanced functionalities, such as for instance the automatic discovery of the activities carried on by users. Novel issues arise in this context; on one hand, it is important to reliably model the phenomena under observation even though, to this end, it is often necessary to craft a carefully designed prototype in order to test and fine-tune the theoretical models.

Understanding the Environment through Wireless Sensor Networks

2007

This paper presents a new cognitive architecture for extracting meaningful, high-level information from the environment, starting from the raw data collected by a Wireless Sensor Network. The proposed framework is capable of building rich internal representation of the sensed environment by means of intelligent data processing and correlation. Furthermore, our approach aims at integrating the connectionist, data-driven model with the symbolic one, that uses a high-level knowledge about the domain to drive the environment interpretation. To this aim, the framework exploits the notion of conceptual spaces, adopting a conceptual layer between the subsymbolic one, that processes sensory data, a…

Probabilistic Anomaly Detection for Wireless Sensor Networks

2011

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are increasingly gaining popularity as a tool for environmental monitoring, however ensuring the reliability of their operation is not trivial, and faulty sensors are not uncommon; moreover, the deployment environment may influence the correct functioning of a sensor node, which might thus be mistakenly classified as damaged. In this paper we propose a probabilistic algorithm to detect a faulty node considering its sensed data, and the surrounding environmental conditions. The algorithm was tested with a real dataset acquired in a work environment, characterized by the presence of actuators that also affect the actual trend of the monitored physical quantities.

Body Area Networks and Healthcare

2014

Derived from Wireless Sensor Networks, Body Area Networks, comprise a wide range of typologies with sensor nodes placed on, close to, or implanted in the body that measure physiological signs. The availability of compact mobile computing devices makes it possible to integrate traditional healthcare with new powerful means. New paradigms in public health are arising from these developments, such as e-health and mHealth, and new converging applications can be envisioned. Physiological data acquisition provided by BANs may give care providers a unobtrusive real-time view on patient’s health. On the other hand, the patient may be informed, assisted and even given the proper treatment by care pr…
