Noli Me Tangere: Social Touch, Tactile Defensiveness, and Communication in Neurodevelopmental Disorders

2019

Tactile defensiveness is a common feature in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Since the first studies, tactile defensiveness has been described as the result of an abnormal response to sensory stimulation. Moreover, it has been studied how the tactile system is closely linked to socio-communicative development and how the interoceptive sensory system supports both a discriminating touch and an affective touch. Therefore, several neurophysiological studies have been conducted to investigate the neurobiological basis of the development and functioning of the tactile system for a better understanding of the tactile defensiveness behavior and the social touch of NDDs. Given the lack of rece…

Neural Mechanisms Underlying Human Auditory Evoked Responses Revealed By Human Neocortical Neurosolver

2022

Funding Information: This study was supported by National Institutes of Health (Grant Nos. NIBIB RO1 EB022889, NIMH RO1 MH106174). Publisher Copyright: © 2021, The Author(s). Auditory evoked fields (AEFs) are commonly studied, yet their underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we used the biophysical modelling software Human Neocortical Neurosolver (HNN) whose foundation is a canonical neocortical circuit model to interpret the cell and network mechanisms contributing to macroscale AEFs elicited by a simple tone, measured with magnetoencephalography. We found that AEFs can be reproduced by activating the neocortical circuit through a layer specific sequence of feedforwar…

Chapter 18 - Sensory Evaluation—Profiling and Preferences

2017

International audience; Tasting has always been at the heart of coffee growing and production. Expert coffee tasting prevails while applying a correct and structured sensory evaluation still requires improvement. In reality, the key actors of the coffee sensory assessment all along the value chain are the expert coffee taster, the sensory analyst, and the consumer. A major challenge for sensory evaluation in coffee is bridging the gap between the expert tasters and consumers. It is especially important in coffee because, as a natural crop product, supplies and the quality of those supplies constantly change, and consumer preferences evolve over time. Thanks to the continuous innovation in t…

Nanosensor for Sensitive Detection of the New Psychedelic Drug 25I-NBOMe.

2020

[EN] This work reports the synthesis, characterization, and sensing behavior of a hybrid nanodevice for the detection of the potent abuse drug 25I-NBOMe. The system is based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles, loaded with a fluorescent dye, functionalized with a serotonin derivative and capped with the 5-HT2A receptor antibody. In the presence of 25I-NBOMe the capping antibody is displaced, leading to pore opening and rhodamine B release. This delivery was ascribed to 5-HT2A receptor antibody detachment from the surface due to its stronger coordination with 25I-NBOMe present in the solution. The prepared nanodevice allowed the sensitive (limit of detection of 0.6 mm) and selective recogniti…

An RF Wireless Power Transfer system to power battery-free devices for asset tracking

2019

Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) infrastructures are becoming more and more available and diffused. One major outcome is the development of new services that help to make everyday life easier and better. One of those to which this paper reserves special attention is asset tracking which refers to the method of tracking physical assets. This service is very well based on IoT infrastructure and, due to the enormous number of objects to be traced, desperately needs the availability of inexpensive tags with sensing capabilities, that can be conveniently monitored from a long distance and require no maintenance. For this, engineers are called to face very challenging i…

Assessing preferences of some predefined consumer profiles for attributes of small fruit

2015

Small fruit (commonly referred to as berries), represents a potential high-value niche-market crop in Italy. This fruit grows naturally in many localities of northern Italy, but favorable environmental conditions for this crop can be found also in southern regions where this production may support local farmers' incomes. According to literature and to official statistics, small fruit's health benefiting properties are well known in the international market, but little is known about the reason of a low commercialization rate of fresh small fruit in Italy. The objective of this study was to assess, in the domestic market, consumer preferences for small fruit according to consumer rankings ap…

Study of the importance of emotional factors connected to the colors of fresh-cut cactus pear fruits in the consumer purchase choices for a marketing…

2013

The cactus pear has always aroused curiosity because of its shape and its particular structural characteristics (plate and spiny clatodes, oval fruits of different colors and flowers of an enchanting beauty). This plant evocates the territory where it grows, characterized by a sub-tropical climate, which in Europe is represented by the region of Sicily, the island of the Southern Italy, that is one of the main producers in the Mediterranean area. Sicily has three native cultivars with different colors of the fruit: red, yellow and white. The variety with the yellow fruit is the most widespread, although all of them are commercialized. The chromatic variety of these fruits is one of the stre…
