Intravascular ultrasound imaging of arterial wall architecture.

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a promising new technique for assessing vascular morphology and structure. Controversy exists whether the three-layer appearance of the arterial wall correctly reflects the histologic structures of the intima, media, and adventitia. We performed an experimental study to clarify the three-layer appearance. The vessel wall architecture was analyzed by IVUS on eight different kinds of plastic cylinders, 24 normal blood vessels from pigs, and 59 human arterial segments. Sensory and sympathetic correlates of heat pain sensitization and habituation in men and women

Background Habituation and sensitization are important behavioural responses to repeated exposure to painful stimuli, but little is known about the factors determining sensory, affective and sympathetic habituation to repeated pain stimulation in men and women. Methods Thirty volunteers (15 women) underwent a standardized heat pain paradigm spread over 8 consecutive days. At the beginning of the experiment, personality dimensions, coping strategies and pain catastrophizing thoughts were determined. SEAL: A Domain-Specific Language for Novice Wireless Sensor Network Programmers

A lot of the prospective wireless sensor network users are novice programmers. Their experience in general-purpose programming languages is either limited or completely nonexistent. There are both financial and scientific incentives to empower these users and allow them to write sensor network applications on their own, rather than having to rely on a qualified computer science professional. Synthesis of molecular materials and heterojunctions, on the interest of ambipolar materials in conductometric gas sensors

The molecular semiconductors have enabled the production of electronic devices such as field effect transistors, diodes and other heterojunctions. The ambipolar materials, capable of carrying both positive charges and negative, result in devices with special properties. The purpose of this thesis is to synthesize new ambipolar materials develop original electronic devices, especially for applications in the field of gas sensors. We are interested in molecules capable to lead to thin films with low temperature techniques known as solution processing, particularly metallo-phthalocyanines.

The availability of satellite optical information is often hampered by the natural presence of clouds, which can be problematic for many applications. Persistent clouds over agricultural fields can mask key stages of crop growth, leading to unreliable yield predictions. Less than thirty years after the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect was described, GMR sensors are the preferred choice in many applications demanding the measurement of low magnetic fields in small volumes. T Cells Integrate Local and Global Cues to Discriminate between Structurally Similar Antigens

International audience; T lymphocytes' ability to discriminate between structurally related antigens has been attributed to the unique signaling properties of the T cell receptor. However, recent studies have suggested that the output of this discrimination process is conditioned by environmental cues. Here, we demonstrate how the IL-2 cytokine, collectively generated by strongly activated T cell clones, can induce weaker T cell clones to proliferate. We identify the PI3K pathway as being critical for integrating the antigen and cytokine responses and for controlling cell-cycle entry. Addition of pasture plant essential oil in milk: Influence on chemical and sensory properties of milk and cheese

The aim of this experiment was to study the effect of the addition, to milk, of an essential oil (EO) obtained from the hydrodistillation of plants collected from a mountain natural pasture on the milk and cheese sensory properties. The EO was mainly composed of terpenoid compounds (67 of the 95 compounds identified) as well as ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, esters, alkanes, and benzenic compounds. In milk, the addition of this EO at the concentration of 0.1 microL/L did not influence its sensory properties, whereas at 1.0 microL/L, sensory properties were modified.
