Chapter 21 Immunohistochemical evidence for a co-transmitter role of opioid peptides in primary sensory neurons
1988
Publisher Summary The purpose of this chapter is to answer several open questions regarding opioid peptides by using a highly sensitive light microscopic (LM) immunohistochemical approach. The chapter mentions the immunohistochemical evidence for a co-transmitter role of opioid peptides in primary sensory neurons. It introduces the concept that there is a functionally important tandem constellation of transmitters in a specific nociceptive population of primary sensory afferents consisting of (1) an inhibitory transmitter family, the opioid peptides, and (2) an excitatory transmitter family, the tachykinins. Small-diameter primary sensory neurons not only transmit nociceptive messages to ce…
Imaging photoplethysmography for evaluation of cutaneous sensory nerve fiber function
2020
Peripheral neuropathy refers to peripheral nervous system dysfunction which affects up to 2% of the world's population. This condition is caused by damage to the small nerve fibers, hence its assessment is still challenging due to the lack of simple, non-invasive and objective diagnostic techniques. The present study aimed to develop and evaluate a simple, objective and non-invasive technique for assessment of small cutaneous sensory nerve fiber function. Our approach is based on utilization of imaging photoplethysmography and local skin heating. The effectiveness of the method was evaluated on young, healthy volunteers (n = 14) after 10 minutes of 45-degree local skin heating, while record…
Evolution of anticipatory effects mediated by epigenetic changes.
2022
Abstract Anticipatory effects mediated by epigenetic changes occur when parents modify the phenotype of their offspring by making epigenetic changes in their gametes guided by information from an environmental cue. To investigate when do anticipatory effects mediated by epigenetic changes evolve in a fluctuating environment, I use an individual based simulation model with explicit genetic architecture. The model allows for the population to respond to environmental changes by evolving within generation plasticity, bet-hedging, or track the environment with genetic adaptation, in addition to the evolution of anticipatory effects. The results show that anticipatory effects evolve when the env…
Application of Electronic Nose for Evaluation of Wastewater Treatment Process Effects at Full-Scale WWTP
2019
This paper presents the results of studies aiming at the assessment and classification of wastewater using an electronic nose. During the experiment, an attempt was made to classify the medium based on an analysis of signals from a gas sensor array, the intensity of which depended on the levels of volatile compounds in the headspace gas mixture above the wastewater table. The research involved samples collected from the mechanical and biological treatment devices of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), as well as wastewater analysis. The measurements were carried out with a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) gas sensor array, when coupled with a computing unit (e.g., a computer with…

Electroretinography in newborn and young infants without sedation
2009
International audience; Purpose: Electroretinography (ERG) is frequently a relevant diagnostic test in pediatric ophthalmology and neurology. ERG at early age is not easy to perform and requires simplified recording protocols and specific norms. In our laboratory especially devoted to developmental studies, an ERG recording method has been adapted to the very young infant. Methods: Monocular ERG was performed in 60 healthy subjects from birth at term to 3 years of age. ERG was recorded using disposable contact lens electrodes in the conscious child with eyes open, after topical anesthesia but without sedation. Stimulus was a white flash (color temperature 5600°K, energy at source 0.3J) appl…

Characterization and Evaluation of Alterations in Sensitivity and Autonomic Function in Cirrhotic Patients with Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy
2022
Influence of nerve growth factor in endometriosis-associated symptoms
2011
To investigate the role of the nerve growth factor (NGF) in the development of dysmenorrhea/pelvic pain in patients with endometriosis, we performed a prospective, clinical, blind study. Peritoneal fluids (PFs) were obtained from patients with histologically proven endometriosis. Patients with endometriosis were divided into 7 different groups depending on their preoperative pain score and symptomatology: patients with no pain, patients with minimal pain (dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, or both), and patients with severe pain (dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, or both) and were used for the neuronal growth assay with cultured chicken dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and for Western blot analyses. Dorsal root …
