Comparing oculomotor efficiency and visual attention between drivers and non-drivers through the Adult Developmental Eye Movement (ADEM) test: A visu…

2021

Objective The objective of this study was to assess and compare drivers’ and non-drivers’ outcomes in the Adult Developmental Eye Movement test (ADEM), a visual-verbal test that measures the time needed to read series of numbers in both a vertical and horizontal reading pattern. A set of driving parameters (i.e., experience, risk exposure, and day and night perceived difficulty) and demographic variables (i.e., age, gender, and academic level) were considered as potential predictors of the test performance. Methods For this cross-sectional study, 302 healthy subjects (age range 20 to 86 years old) completed a self-reported questionnaire aimed at retrieving data on the independent variables…

Contrast sensitivity loss in the peripheral visual field following laser in situ keratomileusis.

2007

We report a case of contrast sensitivity loss in the peripheral visual field following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). A 50-year-old white man was referred to us for differences in visual perception in the peripheral field between the right eye, which had had LASIK, and the left eye, which was emmetropic. Linear meridional static perimetry was carried out in the 0- to 180-degree meridian using a Goldmann perimeter to assess the peripheral perimetric thresholds. There was a statistically significantly marked increased threshold in contrast sensitivity in the nasal and temporal fields from 40 degrees of eccentricity in the LASIK eye compared with that in the emmetropic eye. Eyes treated…

Correlation of pupil size with visual acuity and contrast sensitivity after implantation of an apodized diffractive intraocular lens

2007

To determine whether pupil size is correlated with visual acuity and contrast sensitivity at all distances in eyes with an apodized diffractive intraocular lens (IOL).Private Clinic, Oviedo, Spain.Six months after surgery, the best corrected distance visual acuity, best distance-corrected near visual acuity, intermediate visual acuity, and distance contrast sensitivity under photopic (85 cd/m2) and mesopic (5 cd/m2) conditions were measured in 670 eyes of 335 consecutive patients who had implantation of the AcrySof ReSTOR Natural IOL (SN60D3, Alcon). Pupil diameters in distance vision were measured using a pupillometer. The logMAR best corrected distance acuity was significantly better with …

Effect of genes, social experience, and their interaction on the courtship behaviour of transgenic Drosophila males

2005

Behaviour depends (a) on genes that specify the neural and non-neural elements involved in the perception of and responses to sensory stimuli and (b) on experience that can modulate the fine development of these elements. We exposed transgenic and control Drosophila melanogaster males, and their hybrids, to male siblings during adult development and measured the contribution of genes and of experience to their courtship behaviour. The transgene CheB42a specifically targets male gustatory sensillae and alters the perception of male inhibitory pheromones which leads to frequent male–male interactions. The age at which social experience occurred and the genotype of tester males induced a varia…

Direct costs of glaucoma and severity of the disease: a multinational long term study of resource utilisation in Europe

2005

International audience; Background: Resource utilisation and direct costs associated with glaucoma progression in Europe are unknown. As population progressively ages, the economic impact of the disease will increase. Methods: From a total of 1655 consecutive cases, the records of 194 patients were selected and stratified by disease severity. Record selection was based on diagnoses of primary open angle glaucoma, glaucoma suspect, ocular hypertension, or normal tension glaucoma; 5 years minimum follow up were required. Glaucoma severity was assessed using a six stage glaucoma staging system based on static threshold visual field parameters. Resource utilisation data were abstracted from the…

Temporal refinement of sensory-evoked activity across layers in developing mouse barrel cortex.

2019

Rhythmic whisking behavior in rodents fully develops during a critical period about 2 weeks after birth, in parallel with the maturation of other sensory modalities and the onset of exploratory locomotion. How whisker-related sensory processing develops during this period in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) remains poorly understood. Here, we characterized neuronal activity evoked by single- or dual-whisker stimulation patterns in developing S1, before, during and after the occurrence of active whisking. Employing multi-electrode recordings in all layers of barrel cortex in urethane-anesthetized mice, we find layer-specific changes in multi-unit activity for principal and neighboring b…

Wavelength dependence of the optomotor response in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

2003

Abstract The action spectrum of motion detection in zebrafish (Danio rerio) was measured using the optomotor response in the light adapted state. The function has a single maximum at 550–600 nm, and is similar to the spectral sensitivity function of the L-cone type in the mid and long wavelength range. At shorter wavelengths the values of three of the five fish tested are lower. As in goldfish [Vis. Res. 36 (1996) 4025], the result indicates a dominance of the L-cone type with an inhibitory influence of M- or S-cones. Experiments with a red/green striped cylinder showed that the optomotor response was at minimum whenever the L-cone type was not modulated by the moving pattern. This demonstr…

Probabilistic graphical model identifies clusters of EEG patterns in recordings from neonates

2018

Abstract Objectives In this paper we introduce a novel method for the evaluation of neonatal brain function via multivariate EEG (electroencephalography) signal processing and embedding into a probabilistic graph, the so called Chow-Liu tree. Methods Using 28 EEG recordings of preterm and term neonate infants the complex features of the EEG signals were constructed in the form of a Chow-Liu tree. The trees were embedded into a 3 dimensional Euclidean space. Clustering of specific EEG patterns was done by complete linkage algorithm. Results Our analytic tool was able to build clusters of patients with pathological EEG findings. In particular, we were able to make a visual proof on a 3d multi…

Associations Between Physical and Executive Functions Among Community-Dwelling Older Men and Women

2022

Walking is a complex task requiring the interplay of neuromuscular, sensory, and cognitive functions. Owing to the age-related decline in cognitive and physical functions, walking may be compromised in older adults, for cognitive functions, especially poor performance in executive functions, is associated with slow walking speed. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the associations between different subdomains of executive functions and physical functions and whether the associations found differ between men and women. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed on data collected from 314 community-dwelling older adults who did not meet physical activity guidelines but had…
