Modulation transfer function: Rigid versus foldable phakic intraocular lenses

Purpose To study in a standard eye model the changes in modulation transfer function (MTF) of a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) when a phakic IOL (pIOL) is placed in the anterior chamber, compare the MTFs of the rigid Artisan pIOL and foldable Artiflex pIOL, and evaluate the temporal evolution of the MTF of the foldable pIOL after the mechanical stress the pIOL undergoes when injected. 1. Earlier studies suggest that the memory trace for the conditioned eyeblink reflex is formed and maintained in the interpositus nucleus (IPN) in the deep cerebellar nuclei when either an auditory or visual stimulus is used as a conditioned stimulus (CS). 2. In the present study, the eyeblink reflex of the rabbit was conditioned to a somatosensory CS (an airpuff onto the back). 3. In well-trained animals, the IPN was reversibly inactivated by local cooling and the existence of the learned responses to the CS was then tested. 4. Functional consequences of prejunctional receptor activation or blockade in the iris.

The iris is innervated by nerves of the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sensory nervous systems. The terminal nerve fibres are endowed with prejunctional receptors which modulate neurotransmitter release. Activation or blockade of prejunctional receptors by drugs may have an influence on iris smooth muscle tone. Abstract The connecting cilium of photoreceptor cells is the only intracellular link between the morphologically, functionally and biochemically different compartments of the inner and outer segments. AbstractVertebrate photoreceptor cells are polarized neurons highly specialized for light absorption and visual signal transduction. Photoreceptor cells consist of the light sensitive outer segment and the biosynthetic active inner segment linked by a slender connecting cilium. Brain electrical source analysis of primary cortical components of the tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potential using regional sources.

Tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) show higher amplitudes ipsilateral to the side of stimulation, whereas subdural recordings revealed a source in the foot area of the contralateral hemisphere. We now investigated this paradoxical lateralization by performing a brain electrical source analysis in the P40 time window (34-46 ms). The tibial nerve was stimulated behind the ankle (8 subjects). On each side, 2048 stimuli were applied twice. SEPs were recorded using 32 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-verified electrode positions (bandpass 0.5-500 Hz). Small field motion detection in goldfish is red-green color blind and mediated by the M-cone type

Large field motion detection in goldfish, measured in the optomotor response, is based on the L-cone type, and is therefore color-blind (Schaerer & Neumeyer, 1996). In experiments using a two-choice training procedure, we investigated now whether the same holds for the detection of a small moving object (size: 8 mm diameter; velocity: 7 cm/s). In initial experiments, we found that goldfish did not discriminate between a moving and a stationary stimulus, obviously not taking attention to the cue “moving.” Therefore, random dot patterns were used in which the stimulus was visible only when moving. In der Aderhaut und am Sehnerveneintritt beim Hund werden Sperrarterien beschrieben, die mit zahlreichen Langsmuskelpolstern in der Intima ausgestattet sind und offenbar der Regulation der Aderhautdurchblutung dienen. Auch andere Besonderheiten am Gefassystem im Bereich des Sehnerveneintritts (Venenplexus, arteriovenose Anastomosen) konnten nachgewiesen werden. Weder bei der Katze, beim Kaninchen, Meerschweinchen oder Menschen kommen ahnliche Gefasregulationseinrichtungen vor.

In vitro optical quality differences between multifocal apodized diffractive intraocular lenses.

Purpose To compare the in vitro optical quality of multifocal apodized intraocular lenses (IOLs) at different focal points. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods The Acrysof Restor +3.0 diopter (D) multifocal IOL with 2 main foci (bifocal IOL) and the Finevision multifocal IOL with 3 main foci (trifocal IOL) were evaluated. The optical quality was quantified using the modulation transfer function (MTF) at 7 focal points and for 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm apertures. Stimulus-induced gamma activity in the electrocorticogram of freely moving rats: the neuronal signature of novelty detection.

To investigate the cortical activity pattern associated with the exploration and identification of a novel object we recorded the intracranial electrocorticogram (ECoG) in the barrel cortex of freely moving adult rats using wireless technology. We report here that the exploration and detection of a novel object correlate with a transient increase of synchronized oscillatory activity in the 40–47 Hz frequency band.
