Morphology, flexural, and thermal properties of sepiolite modified epoxy resins with different curing agents

A bisphenol A-based epoxy resin was modified with 5 wt% organically modified sepiolite (Pangel B40) and thermally cured using two different curing agents: an aliphatic diamine (Jeffamine D230, D230) and a cycloaliphatic diamine (3DCM). The morphology of the cured materials was established by scanning and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The thermal stability, thermo-mechanical properties, and flexural behaviour of the sepiolite-modified matrices were evaluated and compared with the corresponding neat matrix. Porous materials as delivery and protective agents for Vitamin A

The suitability of porous materials to immobilize and release under control bioactive molecules prompted us to design and study delivery systems of Vitamin A (VitA). This molecule, relevant in several physiological functions, is easily oxidized. Commercial VitA was immobilized in two different clays, montmorillonite K-10 (MMT) and sepiolite (SEP), and in MCM-41, by impregnation. Characterization of the resulting hybrid materials by XRD, FTIR and 13C and 29Si (MAS) NMR spectroscopies revealed its presence. X-ray diffraction line broadening on vibrating dry-milled Two Crows sepiolite

A reference sample of sepiolite and products of its comminution by vibrating dry-milling have been studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) line-broadening analysis, complementary field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images and surface area measurements. The apparent crystallite sizes determined via XRD are in agreement with observations on FESEM images. The sepiolite aggregates consist of lath-shaped agglutinations of prisms and pinacoids elongated along [001], each lath including several crystallites in that direction. Crystalline microstructure of sepiolite influenced by grinding

The crystalline microstructure of ground sepiolite has been investigated. A reference sample of sepiolite and products of its comminution by dry grinding were studied through X-ray diffraction pattern analysis, specific surface measurements by nitrogen adsorption and complementary analysis of field emission scanning electron microscope images. A statistical model of polycrystals was applied to describe and determine the crystalline microstructure of the studied specimens. Abstract Back in the Middle Ages, glass artists used to produce yellowish colorations in soda-lime glasses using mixtures that contained silver salts, clay composites and natural oils. The resulting colour was a characteristic pale yellow known as silver-stain. This coloration is mainly caused by the extinction – absorption and, to a lesser extent, scattering – of light occasioned by silver nanoparticles formed inside the glass. Salt extraction from lime-based mortars: An experimental study using different poultice formulations

Abstract The extractive capability of soluble salts in poultices treatments currently used in mortar conservation (ArbocelTM plus sepiolite; ArbocelTM, sepiolite and sand; Westox-Cocoon®) were tested to evaluate their efficiency and compatibility with specific mortar substrate.
