The novelty-seeking phenotype modulates the long-lasting effects of adolescent MDMA exposure.

Exposure to drugs such as ethanol or cocaine during adolescence induces alterations in the central nervous system that are modulated by the novelty-seeking trait. Our aim was to evaluate the influence of this trait on the long-term effects of MDMA administration during adolescence on spontaneous behavior and conditioned rewarding effects in adulthood. Gastric Emptying in Infants with Gastroesophageal Reflux: Ultrasound Evaluation before and after Cisapride Administration

The present study aimed to evaluate gastric emptying in children with gastroesophageal reflux (GER) by means of real-time ultrasonography, on the basis of measurements of the cross-sectional area of the gastric antrum. Twelve children with GER were studied (seven males, five females; age range, 3-13 months) and compared with 12 normal control children (six males, six females; age range, 3-13 months). Chronic Fluoxetine Treatment Increases the Expression of PSA-NCAM in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex

Recent hypotheses suggest that changes in neuronal structure and connectivity may underlie the etiology of depression. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is affected by depression and shows neuronal remodeling during adulthood. This plasticity may be mediated by the polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM), which is intensely expressed in the adult mPFC. As the expression of PSA-NCAM is increased by serotonin in other cerebral regions, antidepressants acting on serotonin reuptake may influence PSA-NCAM expression and thus counteract the effects of depression by modulating neuronal structural plasticity. The effects of LSD in the guinea-pig ileum

The effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) on acetylcholine release and on smooth muscle tone were studied in the myenteric plexus-longitudinal muscle preparation of the guinea pig. LSD (0.01-10 microM) depressed in a concentration-dependent manner the electrically-evoked [3H]-acetylcholine outflow from strips preincubated with [3H]-choline. The maximal effect was a 45% inhibition by 1 microM LSD. The spontaneous outflow was not affected. Metitepine competitively antagonized (pA2 8.0) the LSD-induced reduction of the evoked outflow. The unilateral nigral lesion induces dramatic bilateral modification on rat brain monoamine neurochemistry

6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) is a neurotoxic compound commonly used to induce dopamine (DA) depletion in the nigrostriatal system, mimicking Parkinson's disease (PD) in animals. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the 7-day effect of unilateral nigral lesion on rat brain monoamine neurochemistry. Five brain regions were examined: the brain stem, cerebellum, hippocampus, striatum, and cortex. 6-OHDA-unilateral lesion dramatically modified DA, serotonin (5-HT) and their metabolites contents in both sides of the different brain nuclei. We have previously observed that, while the impairing effects of amitriptyline on inhibitory avoidance in mice are consistently observed, those of acute fluoxetine are negligible. Imaging studies have shown that serum concentrations of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor citalopram correlate with serotonin transporter (5-HTT) occupancy in vivo. Experimental diabetes induces hyperreactivity of rabbit renal artery to 5-hydroxytryptamine.

Abstract The influence of diabetes on the response of isolated rabbit renal arteries to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was examined. 5-HT induced a concentration-related contraction that was higher in arteries from diabetic rabbits than in arteries from control rabbits. Endothelium removal did not significantly modify 5-HT contractions in arteries from control rabbits but enhanced the response to 5-HT in arteries from diabetic rabbits.
