Identification of a gene overexpressed in aphids reared under short photoperiod.

Most aphids develop a cyclic parthenogenesis life-cycle. After several generations of viviparously produced parthenogenetic females, follows a single annual generation of sexual individuals, usually in autumn, that mate and lay the sexual eggs. Shortening of photoperiod at the end of the summer (together with temperature) is a key factor inducing the sexual response. Currently no genes involved in the cascade of events that lead to the appearance of sexual forms have been reported. The red tooth hypothesis: A computational model of predator-prey relations, protean escape behavior and sexual reproduction

This paper presents an extension of the Red Queen Hypothesis (hereafter, RQH) that we call the Red Tooth Hypothesis (RTH). This hypothesis suggests that predator-prey relations may play a role in the maintenance of sexual reproduction in many higher animals. RTH is based on an interaction between learning on the part of predators and evolution on the part of prey. We present a simple predator-prey computer simulation that illustrates the effects of this interaction. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of male and female protein extracts after cuticle wiping revealed three major bands. Two of 18 and 22 kDa, named Lma-P18 and Lma-P22, are specific to the male tergal extracts. Moreover, Lma-P22 is only found in the male second tergite extracts. The third one of 54 kDa, named Lma-P54, is common to male and female extracts and could be considered as an ubiquitous surface protein. Morphology of the male and female tergal glands of the woodroach Cryptocercus punctulatus (Insecta, Dictyoptera)

Males and females of Cryptocercus punctulatus possess tergal glands which differ in position, size, morphology, and chemical composition of their secretions. Ultrastructural studies reveal the presence of class 1 and class 3 glandular units interspersed throughout the glands; class 3 glandular units are 30 times as numerous as in the female, but no cytological difference was found between the sexes. The morphology of the tergal glands is characterized by the occurrence of a subcuticular space reservoir, a dense tracheal system, and a thick collagenous layer instead of the typical basement membrane. Although some UFAs can be synthesized by the organism, others must be provided by the diet. Do Women Prefer More Complex Music around Ovulation?

The evolutionary origins of music are much debated. One theory holds that the ability to produce complex musical sounds might reflect qualities that are relevant in mate choice contexts and hence, that music is functionally analogous to the sexually-selected acoustic displays of some animals. If so, women may be expected to show heightened preferences for more complex music when they are most fertile. Here, we used computer-generated musical pieces and ovulation predictor kits to test this hypothesis. Exploring the social and sexual “reality” of contemporary pornography

What are the social roles assumed by men and women in contemporary sexually explicit movies, and in what contexts are their actions portrayed? Perhaps more important, have the predominant themes of pornography shifted in response to the public scrutiny and criticism popular in the mid‐1980s? In this investigation we addressed these questions using a random sample of 50 pornographic videotapes drawn from an archive of essentially all such materials targeted for heterosexual consumers available in the international marketplace from 1979 to 1988.
