Insight into the noble crayfish morphological diversity: a geometric morphometric approach.

2022

The noble crayfish (Astacus astacus), a keystone species of high ecological, economic, and cultural importance in Europe, is threatened due to a long-term population decline caused by anthropogenic pressure on its habitats, the presence of non-indigenous invasive crayfish species and climate change. Since the effective protection of the remaining populations requires conservation measures based on the comprehensive knowledge of the species, including good understanding of its genetic and morphological variability, our aim was to study morphological features of the noble crayfish in Croatia using geometric morphometrics for the first time. We applied two-dimensional geometric morphometrics t…

Apparent absorption of solar spectral irradiance in heterogeneous ice clouds

2010

[1] Coordinated flight legs of two aircraft above and below extended ice clouds played an important role in the Tropical Composition, Cloud and Climate Coupling Experiment (Costa Rica, 2007). The Solar Spectral Flux Radiometer measured up- and downward irradiance on the high-altitude (ER-2) and the low-altitude (DC-8) aircraft, which allowed deriving apparent absorption on a point-by-point basis along the flight track. Apparent absorption is the vertical divergence of irradiance, calculated from the difference of net flux at the top and bottom of a cloud. While this is the only practical method of deriving absorption from aircraft radiation measurements, it differs from true absorption when…

Structural and functional organization of fish assemblages in a Mediterranean shallow CO2 vent.

2017

Inoltre poiché i vent so…

The scattering and re-absorption of red and near-infrared chlorophyll fluorescence in the models Fluspect and SCOPE

2019

Scattering and re-absorption have been recognized as relevant aspects for the interpretation of solar induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) in vegetation remote sensing. In an earlier study [Yang and Van der Tol, RSE 215, 97–108, 2018] we addressed the problem of scattering and re-absorption of near-infrared fluorescence in the vegetation canopy. In this study we analyse within-leaf re-absorption of both red and near-infrared fluorescence using the radiative transfer model Fluspect. The leaf scattering determines the ratio of backward to total leaf fluorescence emission Fb/(Fb + Ff). Fluspect reproduces this ratio with an RMSE of less than 0.1, and explains the observed dependence of the s…

Identifying individuality and variability in team tactics by means of statistical shape analysis and multilayer perceptrons.

2012

Abstract Offensive and defensive systems of play represent important aspects of team sports. They include the players’ positions at certain situations during a match, i.e., when players have to be on specific positions on the court. Patterns of play emerge based on the formations of the players on the court. Recognition of these patterns is important to react adequately and to adjust own strategies to the opponent. Furthermore, the ability to apply variable patterns of play seems to be promising since they make it harder for the opponent to adjust. The purpose of this study is to identify different team tactical patterns in volleyball and to analyze differences in variability. Overall 120 s…

Granulometric moments and corneal endothelium status

2001

Abstract Specular microscopy is a common practice in Ophthalmology. The corneal endothelium status is usually evaluated by means of the density, the hexagonality, the mean, the standard deviation and the coefficient of variation of cell areas. We propose to replace the cell area moments by the corresponding moments of a different probability distribution, the granulometric size distribution associated to a disc. All cells touching the frame are ignored by the area moments but used by the granulometric moments. Twenty images have been analyzed. When the size of the focused region is reduced, the area moments show a greater variation than the corresponding granulometric moments.

Granulometric analysis of corneal endothelium specular images by using a germ–grain model

2007

Specular microscopy is widely used to study the human corneal endothelium status in vivo. In this paper, the corneal endothelium is represented as a binary image composed of the cell inscribed circles. The granulometric distribution function of the complement of this image is used as a functional descriptor, which provides information about the shape, size and spatial arrangement of cells. Experimental evaluation using bootstrap techniques shows its ability to discriminate between controls and pathological cases. It represents a reliable and graphical alternative to the classical indices (cell density, hexagonality and coefficient of variation of cell areas), which behave poorly when detect…

A granulometric analysis of specular microscopy images of human corneal endothelia

2005

The inner layer of the human cornea, called the corneal endothelium, plays an important role in the maintenance of corneal transparency. Specular microscopy is the most widely used technique to study the corneal endothelium in vivo. Improvements in technology have allowed us to obtain good quality specular images, but the detection and quantification of small size-shape cell changes is not obvious, specially when the physician wants to evaluate endothelial cell changes after some surgical procedures. This paper proposes a methodology to analyze specular microscopy images. Every corneal endothelium is described by means of different cumulative distribution functions or some moments (mean, st…

Classifying human endothelial cells based on individual granulometric size distributions

2002

Abstract This paper presents an application to a medical problem of methods of shape analysis based on mathematical morphology. The medical problem consists on the detection of abnormalities in the corneal endothelium, a tissue composed by quasi-planar cells of ideally regular hexagonal shape. Images of this tissue are taken by a specular microscope and used to evaluate the corneal endothelium status. Up to now, cell density, hexagonality and an analysis of cell areas are the usual descriptors of a corneal endothelium. These parameters are not sensitive enough to detect subtle lesions. What this paper proposes is an analysis based on granulometries, which are size-shape descriptors widely u…

Mesonic enhancement of the weak axial charge and its effect on the half-lives and spectral shapes of first-forbidden J+↔J− decays

2018

The effects of the enhancement of the axial-charge matrix element γ5 were studied in medium heavy and heavy nuclei for first-forbidden J+↔J− decay transitions using the nuclear shell model. Noticeable dependence on the enhancement ϵMEC of the axial-charge matrix element, as well as on the value of the axial-vector coupling constant gA was found in the spectral shapes of $^{93}$Y, $^{95}$Sr, and $^{97}$Y. The importance of the spectrum of $^{138}$Cs in the determination of gA is discussed. Half-life analyses in the A≈95 and A≈135 regions were done, and consistent results gA≈0.90, 0.75, and 0.65, corresponding to the three enhancement scenarios ϵMEC=1.4, 1.7, and 2.0, were obtained. Connectio…
