DNA barcoding facilitates many evolutionary and ecological studies, including the examination of the dietary diversity of herbivores. In this study, we present a survey of ecological associations between herbivorous beetles and host plants from seriously threatened European steppic grasslands. We determined host plants for the majority (65%) of steppic leaf beetles (55 species) and weevils (59) known from central Europe using two barcodes (trnL and rbcL) and two sequencing strategies (Sanger for mono/oligophagous species and Illumina for polyphagous taxa). A variety of injuries have always been associated with violence, consequences of which people had to deal with. In this paper we present a complex of craniofacial and dental injuries resulted from sharp force trauma. The basis of our study was historical skeletal material excavated from archeological site in Byczyna (11th–17th century), Poland. Frequency Determined Homomorphic Unsharp Masking Algorithm on Knee MR Images

A very important artifact corrupting Magnetic Resonance (MR) Images is the RF inhomogeneity, also called Bias artifact. The visual effect produced by this kind of artifact is an illumination variation which afflicts this kind of medical images. In literature a lot of works oriented to the suppression of this artifact can be found. The approaches based on homomorphic filtering offer an easy way to perform bias correction but none of them can automatically determine the cut-off frequency. In this work we present a measure based on information theory in order to find the frequency mentioned above and this technique is applied to MR images of the knee which are hardly bias corrupted.

Meristic character analysis and skeletal anomalies during growth in reared sharpsnout seabream

Sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo) is a species currently reared in Mediterranean fish farms. In order to detect the main types of body deformation in sharpsnout seabream. 120 specimens (60 juveniles and 60 adults) taken from a Mediterranean hatchery were examined. In juveniles and adults non-significant differences were found in the number of vertebrae, dorsal spines and pectoral fin rays. Moreover, the number of anomalies varied with age. The juveniles presented 28 types of anomaly, the adults 25. Risk-Managed 52-Week High Industry Momentum, Momentum Crashes, and Hedging Macroeconomic Risk

This is the first study that investigates the profitability of Barroso and Santa-Clara’s (2015) risk managing approach for George and Hwang’s (2004) 52-week high momentum strategy in an industrial portfolio setting. The findings indicate that risk-managing adds value as the Sharpe ratio increases, and the downside risk remarkably decreases. Even after controlling for the spread of the traditional 52-week high industry momentum strategy in association with standard risk-factors, the risk-managed version generates economically and statistically significant payoffs. Option-implied volatility-managed risk factor models produce higher maximum squared Sharpe ratios than the recently proposed six-factor model, which is used as a benchmark model in this study. A fuzzy-set analysis of conditions influencing mutual fund performance

Abstract This paper presents an application of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to frame the conditions that lead to over- or under-performance of mutual funds. Building upon a considerable library of research on fund returns, the study uses fsQCA to affirm and extend earlier discoveries. Considered here is fund performance relative to Morningstar ratings, features of the funds themselves, as well as characteristics of the fund managers. Results suggest that positive Morningstar and analyst ratings are necessary conditions, on average, for funds to generate value according to the Jensen's alpha ratio.
