Rheology-morphology relationships in nylon 6/liquid-crystalline polymer blends

1990

Extrusion measurements have been carried out on blends of nylon 6 and a liquid-crystalline copolyesteramide (LCP). The flow curves at low temperature show a behavior similar to that of pure LCP with a rapid rise of the viscosity at low shear rates. At high shear rates the viscosity is lower than that for each of the two components. This minimum has been attributed to the lack of interactions between the two phases and to the formation of fibrils of the LCP phase. The SEM analysis shows, indeed, that fibrils of the LCP phase are produced in the convergent flow at the inlet of the capillary at high shear rates. These fibrils are lost during the flow in the long capillary.

Adhesive joining of Aluminum AA6082: the effect of resin and surface treatment

2009

Abstract In this work the effects of both the substrate surface condition and the adhesive properties on single-lap aluminium joint resistance were analysed. The aluminium sheets were mechanically treated with two abrasive surfaces evaluating the induced roughness; four different resins were used in adhesion tests. Moreover, wettability tests were performed in order to evaluate the effect of the above-mentioned parameters on the substrate/adhesive interaction. A design of experiments was defined in order to quantify the effect of the considered factors and their correlation.

Transient response in nonlinear region of molten polymers subjected to a sudden imposition of constant shear stress or constant electric field

1980

Experimental transient results in the nonlinear region are reported for a commercial polyisobutylene subjected to sudden imposition of either a constant shear stress or a constant electric field. Some steady-state results, eventually obtained in different types of experiments, are also considered. In both cases, a model analysis is presented that accounts for the nonlinear effects through changes in the free volume depending upon the applied stress. The good comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental results seems to indicate that the phenomenological approach advanced here is very promising.

Linear Viscoelasticity of Liquid-Crystalline Polymers

2004

A linear (small-amplitude) periodic shear deformation of anisotropic viscoelastic liquids obeying the Akay–Leslie rheological model is considered. The frequency dependences of the real and imaginary components of the complex shear modulus and complex normal-stress coefficient are determined. A comparison between calculation results and test data on the shear flow of poly(γ-benzylglutamate) in m-cresol is carried out. It is stated that, if the material is characterized by some initial orientation, both components of the complex shear modulus contain a multiplier which depends on the degree of the initial orientation and increases the values of the components compared with those for an initia…

An experimental method for the investigation of rigid polyurethane foams in shear

2018

Widespread applications of rigid polyurethane and plastic foams lead to shear deformations. Therefore, methods for ensuring shear using experimental investigations are necessary, including the possibility of determining the shear modulus, strength and limit angle. Therefore, a device that allows investigating the shear properties of highly porous plastic foams was developed. The proposed device comprises a clip-on extensometer, commonly exploited in uni-axial compression/tension tests, for the determination of the shear displacement directly on the foams’ sample, on a measurement zone of certain dimensions and location. An innovative construction of the extensometer’s legs is elaborated, p…

Synthesis and properties of model - micronetworks

1989

Microgels are small network particles with overall dimensions in the 100nm-region. Some experiments concerning the behaviour of cross-linked matter can be more easily performed using the molecular nature of μ-gels. In this publication, the synthesis and characterization by light and neutron scattering and dynamic-mechanical shear experiments of two different types of μ-gels are presented.

Strain mapping near a triple junction in strained Ni-based alloy using EBSD and biaxial nanogauges

2011

A key element for analyzing the crack initiation in strained polycrystalline alloys is the local quantification of the surface strain distribution according to the grain texture. Using electron backscattered diffraction, the local microstructure was determined to both localize a triple junction and deduce the local Schmid factors. Kernel average misorientation (KAM) was also used to map the areas of defect concentration. The maximum principal strain and the in-plane shear strain were quantified using the biaxial nanogauge. Distortions of the array of nanodots used as spot markers were analyzed near the triple junction. The crystallographic orientation and the surface strain were then invest…

Equilibrium Dynamics and Shear Rheology of Semiflexible Polymers in Solution

2017

We study the structure and dynamics of semidilute solutions of semiflexible polymers at rest and under shear using hybrid molecular dynamics simulations that take hydrodynamic interactions into account. We show that the polymer center-of-mass diffusion coefficient significantly decreases with increasing chain stiffness at fixed monomer density. The zero-shear viscosity shows a corresponding increase due to the intermolecular interactions of stiffer chains. We apply steady shear flow to the polymer solutions and show that at high shear rates the flow properties become almost independent of polymer stiffness. We characterize the polymer conformations under shear and find that in this regime p…

Redesign of the Geometry of Parts Produced from PBT Composite to Improve Their Operational Behavior

2021

Parts produced from PBT-GF30 (70% polybutylene terephthalate +30% fiberglass) are very often used in car construction, due to the properties of this material. The current trend is to make parts with a shape designed to be as complex as possible, to take over many functions in operation. During the research, a part that is a component of the structure of car safety systems, and that must be completely reliable in operation, was analyzed. This piece has a complex shape that involves the intersection of several walls. Thus, the research aimed at establishing the optimal radius of connection between the walls (R), the ratio between the thickness of the intersecting walls (K) and the angle of in…

Structure and dynamics of polyethylene/clay films

2006

The relationships between structure and rheology of polyethylene/clay hybrid composite blown films were investigated through rheological tests both in shear and elongational flow. Two polymer matrices (low density polyethylene, LDPE and linear low density polyethylene, LLDPE) with different relaxation kinetics were used. Independently from the matrix, morphological analyses (TEM, XRD, and SEM) indicate that the hybrid structures are similarly constituted of delaminated platelets or tactoids having a relevant degree of orientation along the draw direction. This strongly affects the rheological behavior of materials. However, despite the similarities emerged from morphological analyses, both …
